Definitions
- Plate-type binding with fast engage/disengage mechanism suitable for snowboards and similar equipment
- the present device is a plate-shaped binding provided with a fast engage/disengage mechanism, particularly suitable for snowboards and similar equipment.
- snowboards which are becoming more and more popular, can have two different types of bindings, the first one called the “soft-ty ⁇ e , and the second one called “plate-type”.
- This second one is more appropriate when the snowboard is used in conditions where the athlete looks for a better, more direct transmission between foot and the board, and allows for easy engage and disengage when compared with the soft-type bindings.
- the user In the soft-type, the user has to rely on particular levers that lock the boot into the binding.
- the plate-type bindings have a larger success because of their simplicity and a good adaptability to almost all terrains where the snowboards are used, both on slope and off slope.
- This plate-type binding requires the use of soft boot with only few reinforcements required.
- the joint between the boots and the old style plate-type bindings is made by a plate element in direct contact with the boot sole.
- the boot is provided with protrusions along the perimeter of the sole, which are designed to fit the appropriate blocking device on the plate-type binding.
- the main purpose of the device herein presented is therefore to realize a plate-type binding with fast engage/disengage suitable for snowboards and similar equipment, that is provided with an intermediate blocking position where the boot can be promptly released without any difficulty in some situations.
- one task of this device is to realize a plate-type binding with fast engage and disengage where the same levers that are used to lock the boot into the binding are also used to keep the boot in the intermediate blocking position (idle).
- Another task of this device is to realize a plate-type binding with fast engage and disengage which can be mounted on snowboards and similar equipment. Last but not least, this device with fast engage and disengage should be highly reliable, simple to manufacture and cost competitive.
- the binding includes a plate element connected to the snowboard that supports primary and secondary latching devices that are designed to block the boots on the snowboard.
- the secondary devices are provided with a lever that allows the boot to be disengaged in an idle condition.
- the secondary devices include blocking devices pivoted between two brackets together with the lever.
- the two brackets are provided with a cavity that is connected to a pivot associated with the lever when the lever is in 'closed-blocked' position and with an indentation for the pivot when lever is in the intermediate "closed-idle * position.
- These blocking devices are provided with a cam profile that is positioned above the pivot when the pivot is in the cavity. Another pivot is connected to the previous lever pivot with a spring.
- Figure 1 is an overview drawing of the binding with all latching mechanism components exposed.
- Figure 2 is a overview drawing of the binding with components assembled.
- Figure 3 is a side view of the binding in open position
- Figure 4 is a side view of the binding in closed-blocked position
- Figure 5 is a side view of the binding in closed-idle position
- Figure 6 is a top view of the binding where the base plate that will be mounted on the boot sole is indicated by a dashed line.
- the binding includes a base plate element (number 2) that is supposed to be in contact and installed on the top surface of the snowboard (number 30).
- the base plate is provided with a central hole (number 32) and the disk (number 33) fits into this hole (number 32).
- the disk is provided with holes (number 34) for use in fixing the disk on the board 30. In this way it is possible to regulate the orientation of the base plate 2 with respect to the snowboard 30.
- the primary and secondary engaging devices On the base plate element are mounted the primary and secondary engaging devices whose function is to lock the boot of the user into the plate-type binding element 1.
- the primary latching devices globally indicted by number 3, include a pair of brackets
- Pivot 5 supports the guide elements 6 that are provided with the groove 7.
- the groove is supposed to fit the prominence 8 of the boot base plate 9.
- the base plate 9 is mounted on the sole of the boot.
- the guide elements 6 are provided with a tooth 19 that engages in the groove 10 when the boot is inserted into the binding.
- the groove 10 is in correspondence with the base plate element 2.
- the secondary engaging elements of the plate-type binding 1 are globally indicated by number 3 ' . They include, similar to the primary elements, a pair of brackets 11 holding the lever 2. The lever 2 is pivoted between the two brackets. The brackets have a cam profile with the reentry 13 that ends in the cavity 14. During the operation of lever 12. the cavity 14 is supposed to receive pivot 15. During the operation the pivot 15 slides into two sliding notches 16 machined in the lever element.
- the lever 12 is pivoted between the two brackets 11 with pivot 17.
- the boot blocking devices (indicated by number 20) are also pivoted between the brackets.
- the boot blocking devices are also provided with the additional pivot 21 that is supposed to be connected to pivot 15 by leaf spring 22.
- the blocking devices 20 are provided with cam profiles 35 which end with the end-stop
- Each cam profile allows pivot 15 to slide during the closing and opening with the levers (disengage lever) 12.
- the end-stop 23 allows the engage of pivot 15 in blocking condition.
- the latching of the boot in the binding is performed by inserting the prominence 8 of the base plate 9 above pivot 21 that is connected through the spring 22 with pivot 15.
- pivot 15 is at the top of the sliding notch 16 of the lever 12 and is blocked into the cavity 14.
- the disengage is performed by acting on the lever 12, by pulling it in the upward direction.
- the sliding notches 16 slide with respect to pivot 15 and pivot 15 is slightly pulled upward during the last part of this movement.
- This movement takes the pivot from cavity 14 into the cavity 13.
- the secondary blocking devices 3' are in a condition where the boot is still engaged into the binding but can be easily disengaged without acting on the levers 12.
- the end-stop 23 of the blocking devices 20 does not latch pivot 15 and the blocking devices 20 are free to rotate around pivot 17.
- the leaf spring 22 is at the maximum tension position and keeps the boot locked into the binding.
- the motion of the blocking device 20 allows to disengage the prominence 8 of the boot base plate 9 from the secondary blocking devices.
- this binding accomplishes the required tasks.
- this binding allows to have a position where the boot is blocked, a position where the boot is disengaged and an intermediate position where the boot is still engage but the user can easily disengage the boot from the binding without acting on the lever.
- This solution gives a large flexibility to the binding because it allows the user to keep the boot in an intermediate position between a blocked condition and a disengaged condition depending on the situation, for example during the utilization of ascent plants like the ski- lift.
- the insertion of the prominence 8 of the boot base plate 9 above of the pivot 21 allows to act a pressure against the pivot and therefore to keep the boot blocked into the binding. This is because the blocking devices, which are provided with the additional pivot 21, are in contact with the plate element 2 and the weight of the user causes that, even when the snow collected below the blocking device 20 melts, the rotation of the blocking device 20 is completed.
