Definitions
- Skate and skateboard ramps are generally built individually, mostly by preparing individual vertical support elements and horizontal connecting beam and joist elements by properly shaping and sizing (cutting and/or sawing) those from standard wood material (so called MDF plates, "two by four" timber, etc.), by assembling those elements to a support structure, and by positionning a riding surface (metal plates, fiber-laminate plates, etc.) on said support structure.
- Skate and roller ramps of this type are known for instance through a "Do It Yourself" system involving detailed template-plans and material and construction recommendations, distributed under the trademark “RAMPTECH” ; methods for building similar ramps are also known for instance from German Gebrauchsmuster 90 10 527 and from European patent application EP 0 796 641.
- the invention therefor provides a method for building skate- and/or skateboard-ramps and the like, involving the assembly of a support structure from vertical support elements and horizontal connecting beam and joist elements, and the positionning of at least one riding surface element on said support structure, in which said vertical support elements, said horizontal connecting beam and joist elements, and said riding surface elements consist of prefabricated, precision cut and/or engineered elements ready for easy assembly by simple screwing and/or nailing techniques or the like.
- pre-fabricated refers to building elements for which all the preplanning/measuring and time consuming preparation work has been taken care of and all that remains is to put the finished pieces together.
- pre-fabricated elements are of course known per se, as for instance for furniture (as exemplified by furniture kits distributed under the trademark "IKEA") but it has never been suggested to use pre- fabrication for building skate or roller ramps.
- European patent application EP 0 796 641 refers to the use of modular parts consisting of self-supporting elements which can easily be assembled, disassembled and transported; the building method according to this patent does however not involve the use of pre-fabricated elements in the sense as used for this invention.
- precision cut and/or engineered refers to the preparation ("pre- fabrication) of the building elements for the method according to the invention in such way that the various elements tightly or closely interlock when assembling those elements; the expression in particular refers to Computer Numerical Controlled fabrication of the building elements, as a preferred embodiment of the invention; the method according to the invention however extends to any other method of manufacturing.
- the vertical support elements suitably consist of a prefabricated precision engineered plank-material
- the connecting beam and joist elements suitably consist of pre-fabricated beam and joist pieces precision cut to required sizes
- the riding surface elements suitably consist of prefabricated elements of a bendable sheet material precision cut to required sizes.
- plank-material refers to any material available as flat plates which can be properly shaped and sized (in particular cut, sawn and/or milled, or alternarively moulded) , such as wood, pressure treated lumber, impregnated lumber, particle-board, fiber-board, wood-laminates, wood and fiber laminates, plastic plates, steel, aluminium, etc., etc., or which can be directly moulded to such shaped and sized plates (in particular plastic materials, such as recycled thermoplastics) .
- the vertical support elements may in particular be provided with precision modelled slots fitting the ends of the connecting beam and joist elements.
- precision modelled refers to the fabrication of the slots, such as by milling or grooving the slots into a plank material, i.e. by tooling a plank material by means of cutting tools, grooving tools and/or moulding cutters, preferably in conjunction with Computer Numerical Control means, or by direct moulding (injection moulding) of a plastic material into the appropriate shape comprising said slots.
- the material used for the vertical support elements may very suitably consist of recycled polyethylene and polypropylene plates; the plates are precision modelled to the appropriate size and shape and provided with precision modelled slots fitting the ends of said the connecting beam and joist elements.
- the vertical support elements may also consist of a first plate of wood, plastic or a recycled polyethylene and polypropylene mixture, precision cut to the appropriate size and shape, and be provided with a further plate of wood, plastic or a recycled polyethylene and polypropylene mixture, fitted to said first plate and provided with precision modelled slots fitting the ends of said the connecting beam and joist elements.
- the slot corners are preferably executed with more or less diagonally extending, straight or curved groove-extensions, i.e. linear grooves extending outwardly from the slots, substantially along the bisectrix of the angle of the slot-corner. This allows a better fit of the straight angle rims of the beam and joist elements into the extremity of the slots.
- This preferred optional feature of the invention is explained in more detail hereafter, having reference to the attached drawings .
- the material used for the connecting beam and joist elements suitably consists of standard building timber or lumber of appropriate sizes (in particular so called “two by four" lumber, which specifically refers to lumber of 2X4 inch, but by extension often also refers to wooden beams of any other standard size) , preferably pressure treated lumber, impregnated lumber, etc.
- the material used for the riding surface elements preferably consists of wood particle and/or fiber laminate materials, such as in particular RICHLITE and SKATELITE
- the vertical support elements may furthermore be provided with grooves along the upper rim intended for fitting the rim of said riding surface elements. According to whether such riding surface is to be positioned only on one side- rim of the support element (lateral support element of a ramp) or on both side-rims (in the case of larger (broader) ramps also comprising central support elements) one or two grooves are provided along the upper rim of the support elements .
- kit of parts for building a skate or skateboard-ramp or the like which comprises : vertical support elements, horizontal connecting beam and joist elements, and at least one riding surface element on said support structure, consisting of pre-fabricated, precision cut and/or engineered elements ready for easy assembly by simple screwing and/or nailing techniques or the like.
- kits of parts according to the invention involve such details corresponding to those disclosed hereabove in connection with the method for building skate and/or skateboard-ramps .
- the method and the kit of parts according to the invention are suited for any type of ramp, such as so-called quarter- pipes, half pipes and all other standard ramp models.
- the parts of the kit are fastened utilizing nail guns, screw guns, and other fastening techniques. This building system is ten times faster than any of the current worldwide ramp building techniques from concrete and/or steel and/or wood.
- the "two by four" beams slide in the grooved slots in the transitions (the vertical support elements) , just tight enough to fit together and interlock, holding the templates upright without screws .
- the assembly can then be consolidated by screwing or nailing the parts together.
- the system is so easy and foolproof anyone with no knowledge of ramps and/or buildings can successfully build a ramp in a short time. No drilling/cutting or sawing is necessary to complete the kit .
- a hand screw driver or better yet a cordless screwdriver will complete the job right every time .
- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a "quarter pipe" -type roller ramp
- Figure 2 is a perspective view of a partly finished roller ramp of the type shown on figure 1, built using the method according to the invention
- Figure 3 is a front view of a support element as used for building the roller ramp of figure 2;
- Figure 4 is a side view of the support element of figure 3 along the direction of arrow-head A.
- roller ramp shown on figure 1, designated as a whole by reference numeral (1) is a typical representation of a standard "quarter pipe" ramp. In principle there is not much which could distinguish the general, external aspect of a finished standard ramp from a ramp built in accordance with the method of this invention and/or assembled from a kit of parts according to the invention. As shown on figures 2 - 4, it is only on the interlocking building elements that the distinctive features of the invention are apparent .
- Figure 2 shows a quarter pipe ramp in accordance with the method and the kit of parts of the invention, during construction, only partly finished.
- the figure shows two support elements (2) , also referred to as “templates” or “transitions”, hold upright by three pieces (3) of "2X4" beams fitted with their ends (4) in slots (5) grooved in the inner surface (6) of the support elements (2) .
- the slots (5) have diagonally extending groove-extensions (7) .
- the purpose of these groove-extensions (7) is essentially to facilitate the proper and neat cutting or grooving of the slots (5) in such way that straight angles of the beam-ends (4) , completely and tightly fit to the extemity of the slots (5) .
- the slots (5) are grooved to a dept of approximately 10 mm. into the material of the support elements, i.e. to approximately half of the thickness of for instance 20 mm of the MDF board or preferably recycled PE/PP plates, as more clearly illustrated on figure 4.
- Figure 3 also makes visible a milled groove (8) along the upper rim of the support element (2) intended for fitting the rim of the riding surface elements (9) .
- the slots (10) shown on figures 1, 2 and 3 constitute handles, known per se, for making the handling of the elements more easy.
