Abstract

A non-metallic cable (10) is provided for protection against lightning and attacks by rodents. The cable (10) comprises an inner core (12) having, for example, at least one optical fiber (14). The core (12) is surrounded by a buffer layer (16). At least one strand (24) comprising a plurality of reinforcing fibers (26) is helically wound about the buffer layer (16) in such a manner as to provide structural support to the cable (10). The plurality of reinforcing fibers (26) include one or more rodent deterring materials to protect the cable (10) from attacks by rodents. The rodent deterring material may include rodenticides or preferably non-toxic materials meant to merely irritate the rodent so as to prevent further attacks. Further, the size of the reinforcing fibers (26) is such that when ruptured, splinters are introduced to the rodent causing more irritation.
