Definitions
- the present invention relates to an isolation device for use with an electrical component.
- the invention relates to an isolation device for use with an electrical terminal component incorporating a contact member which can be removed from its operative position.
- adhesive labels can become detached, or can be removed easily, so that the isolation becomes potentially ineffective.
- an electrical isolation device for use with an electrical terminal component forming part of an electrical circuit, the terminal component having a contact member which is movable from an operative position, in which the contact member establishes an electrical connection between electrical contacts on said component, to an inoperative position, in which the contact member breaks the electrical connection
- the isolation device comprises an isolation member having a location means whereby the isolation member can be releasably attached to the terminal component, the isolation member having a recess formed therein for receiving the contact member when the latter is in said inoperative position.
- the location means extend from a base of the isolation member.
- the isolation member may have a height dimension measured from the base in a first plane and a width dimension measured in a second plane extending perpendicularly with respect to the first plane, the width dimension of the recess being equal to a width dimension of the isolation member.
- the height dimension is several times greater than the width dimension.
- the isolation member has a rim extending in a plane or planes parallel to said second plane and defining at least a portion of a periphery of the isolation member, the rim having an access opening through which the contact member enters the recess.
- the rim may define a boundary of the recess.
- the recess is formed in the base.
- the rim defines a side wall extending perpendicularly from the base, the recess being formed in the side wall.
- the rim extends laterally from a web lying in a plane parallel to said first plane.
- An aperture may be provided in the web, the aperture serving to receive a locking means.
- the locating means may comprise at least one dowel adapted to be received in a locating hole provided in the terminal component .
- the locating means may comprise a locating bar extending parallel to the base, the locking bar being adapted to be releasably retained by the electrical contacts provided on the terminal component.
- the isolation member is formed as a single moulding of plastics material.
- Figure 1 shows a part cross sectional end elevation of an electrical terminal component equipped with an isolation member according to a first embodiment of the invention
- Figure 2 shows a front elevation of a plurality of electrical components, each of which is equipped with an isolation member as shown in Figure 1,
- FIG. 3 shows an isometric view of the isolation member illustrated in Figures 1 and 2
- Figure 4 shows a part cross sectional end elevation of an electrical terminal component equipped with an isolation member according to a second aspect of the invention
- Figure 5 shows a front elevation of a plurality of electrical components, each of which is equipped with an isolation member as shown in Figure 4, and
- Figure 6 shows an isometric view of the isolation member illustrated in Figures 4 and 5.
- an electrical terminal component in the form of a switch 1 of a known type is releasably attached to a mounting rail 2.
- the switch 1 provides a junction for input and output electrical cables 3, 4 forming part of an electrical circuit.
- An access opening 5 enables the cable 3 to pass into a clamp 6 in which the cable is held firmly by means of a screw 7.
- the clamp 6 is connected to an electrical contact 8.
- the cable 4 passes through an access opening 9 into a clamp 10 in which the cable is held firmly by means of a screw 11.
- a connection is made between the clamp 10 and an electrical contact 12.
- Countersunk holes 13, 14 extending from an upper surface 15 of the switch 1 are provided to accommodate the heads of the screws 7, 11, respectively.
- the switch 1 is provided with a contact member 16 which is pivotably mounted on a pin 17 so as to enable the contact member to move between operative and inoperative positions.
- a contact member 16 In the operative position, contact leaves 18 on the contact member 16 are engaged with the contacts 8, 12 so that an electrical connection exists between the cables 3 and 4.
- the contact member 16 is pivotably moved about the pivot pin 17 to the inoperative position, as shown in Figure 1. With the contact member 16 in the inoperative position, maintenance or inspection of the equipment in the circuit served by the switch 1 can be carried out.
- an isolation device comprising an isolation member 20, is mounted on the switch 1.
- the isolation member 20 which is a single moulding of plastics material, has a rim 21 extending around the periphery and extending laterally on either side of a central web 22. Two portions of the rim 21 form a base 23 from which depend two locating dowels 24. The dowels 24 can be inserted into the holes 13, 14 in the switch 1 to enable the isolation member 20 to be mounted on the switch 1, as seen in Figure 1. Also depending from the base 23 is a projection 25 provided at its leading end with a catch 26.
- a recess 27 of rectangular section has an access opening in the base 23 and is bounded on three sides by the rim 21.
- the rim 21 also forms two vertical side walls 28, 29 and a top wall 30, the junctions of the side walls with the top wall being chamfered.
- Two grooves 31 are formed at the upper ends of the side walls 28, 29 to facilitate manual gripping of the isolation member 20.
- a hole 32 is provided in the central web 22 for the purpose described below.
- the height dimension of the isolation member 20 as measured from the base 23 is several times the width dimension of the rim 29 measured perpendicularly to the height dimension. In the embodiment described herein the height dimension is of the order of 6 times greater than the width dimension.
- the isolation member 20 is then positioned over the switch 1 with the contact member 16 in alignment with the recess 27.
- the projection 25 is caused to deflect laterally by engagement of the catch 26 with an internal surface of the switch 1.
- the catch 26 clips below the internal surface so as to inhibit removal of the isolation member 20.
- the two dowels 24 register with the holes 13, 14 so that the isolation member 20 is correctly located on the switch 1. In this position the contact member 16 is housed within the recess 27, the sides of which prevent the contact member 16 from being returned to its operative position.
- a plurality of switches 1 can be mounted side-by-side on the rail 2, each switch being provided with an isolation member. Only four switches 1 have been shown, but it will be appreciated that any number may be provided. Security of the isolation members 20 is enhanced by the provision of locking means common to all of the members.
- a circular bar 33 passes through the aligned holes 32 of the isolation members. At one end, the bar 33 has an increased diameter to provide a head 34 which locates against the web 22 and prevents passage of the bar through the holes 32. At the other end, the bar has a diametral hole 35 through which is inserted a pivotable hook 36 of a padlock 37. The hook 36 is locked into a padlock body, the key being removed to prevent unauthorised unlocking.
- FIG. 4 An alternative isolation device, comprising an isolation member 40, is shown in Figures 4, 5 and 6.
- the isolation member 40 is adapted for use with an electrical terminal component 41, which is clipped on a mounting rail 42.
- the isolation member 40 has a removable contact member in the form of a fuse holder 43 which supports a removable fuse 44.
- the fuse holder 43 is pivotably mounted on a pivot pin 45 provided on the terminal component 41. In an operative position, the fuse holder 43 is pivoted through 90°, in an anti-clockwise direction as viewed in Figure 1, so that it locates against an upper surface 46 of the terminal component 40.
- the fuse holder 43 is provided with a catch 47 which clips behind a surface (not shown) on the terminal component 41.
- the fuse 44 establishes an electrical connection between a pair of electrical contacts 48 on the terminal component 41.
- electrical current can flow between the cables 49, 50 so as to energise the electrical circuit served by the terminal component 41.
- the isolation member 40 comprises a single moulding of plastics material.
- the isolation member 40 is formed with a peripheral rim 51 which extends laterally on each side of a central web 52.
- a portion of the rim 51 forms a base 53 from which depends a location member 54 formed with a part-cylindrical locating bar 55.
- a recess 56 of rectangular section projects into a side wall 57 extending perpendicularly from the base 53.
- the recess 56 is bounded on three sides by the rim 51, and has a latch 58 projecting from its upper, outer end.
- two grooves 59 are formed in the side wall 57 above the recess 56 and in the other side wall 60.
- a hole 61 is provided in the central web 52 to accommodate a locking component when locking means are used to secure a plurality of isolation members 40.
- the height dimension of the isolation member 40 as measured vertically from the base 53 is several times the width dimension of the rim 51 measured perpendicularly with respect to the height dimension. In the embodiment shown in Figure 6, the height dimension is of the order of 5 times greater than the width dimension.
- the fuse 44 is removed from the contacts 48. This is achieved by pivoting the fuse holder 43 from its operative position through approximately 180° in a clockwise direction, as viewed in Figure 4.
- the isolation member 40 is then mounted on the terminal component 41 by inserting the locating bar 55 into the contacts 48. Rotation of the fuse holder 43 in a reverse direction causes the fuse 44 to enter the recess 56 until the catch 47 clips behind the latch 58 so as to retain the fuse holder 43 in an inoperative position. If desired, the fuse 44 can then be removed from the fuse holder 43.
- a plurality of terminal components 41 can be mounted side-by- side on the rail 42 with each component being provided with an isolation member 40, as seen in Figure 5.
- the isolation members 40 can be locked together by a locking arrangement similar to that illustrated in Figure 2.
