ACCESSORY KIT FOR SERVICING AN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE THIS INVENTION relates to an accessory kit for use in servicing a machine.
This invention is expected to be particularly advantageously applicable to changing oil of an internal combustion engine.
In accordance with the invention, there is provided an accessory kit for use in servicing a machine, the accessory kit including a free standing, open-topped vessel suitable for containing at least about 2,5 litres of oil and being of a shape and size suitable for being positioned underneath a drain plug of an oil sump of the machine; a container of at least about 2,5 litres of fresh or replacement oil and having a discharge opening for discharging the fresh or replacement oil into the machine, the container being received in said vessel; a removable covering covering the open top of the vessel and retaining the contents of the vessel.
The machine may be an internal combustion engine. Instead, it may be a gearbox, differential, or the like.
The vessel may be in the form of a synthetic plastics moulding of a material which is appropriately temperature resistant to withstand the temperature of engine oil of an internal combustion engine. Thus, the material is able to withstand the temperature effects of oil at a temperature of 180°C maximum without undue deterioration.
The vessel may carry markings of a kind associated with packaging of goods, e.g. a name and logo, i.e. in the form of a trade mark, information about the product, and user instructions. The markings may be on film or other sheet material adhering to the surface of the vessel, overwrapping the vessel, or the like. The vessel may advantageously have a carrying handle. The container may be of flexible synthetic plastics material. It may be in the form of a pouch or bag. The container may carry markings identifying the engine oil contained therein, e.g. identifying the oil in respect of brand and kind. The discharge opening may advantageously be connected to a member or formation to facilitate pouring the oil therefrom, e.g. a member or
- 2 - formation in the form of a nozzle or a length of piping.
By way of development, the discharge opening may be closed in tamper proof fashion.
Further by way of development, the vessel may contain one or more further accessories selected from a flexible sheet in folded format having an area suitable to spread it on a support surface underneath the sump and underneath the vessel to protect the support surface against spillage or dripping of oil in use; a paper cloth for wiping the hands of the user and a measuring or dipstick of the engine; a pair of disposable gloves; a sticker which can be applied to the internal combustion engine or to a vehicle having the internal combustion engine and being suitable for carrying information about the oil change or when a following oil change will be required.
The covering may advantageously be in the form of a replaceable cover for covering the vessel when it contains the old engine oil to prevent spilling. The invention is now described by way of example with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings. In the drawings
Figure 1 shows, in three-dimensional side view, an accessory kit in accordance with the invention; and
Figures 2, 3, 4 and 5 show, respectively in three-dimensional view, respectively a flexible bag containing replacement oil, a drip sheet, a paper cloth and a sticker.
With reference to the drawings, Figure 1 shows an accessory kit 10 in accordance with the invention. The accessory kit includes a vessel generally indicated by reference numeral 12, in the form of an open-topped, free-standing vessel having a replaceable cover 14 and a carrying handle 16. The vessel 12 is of moulded synthetic plastics material and is generally in box form but has draw angles to facilitate de-moulding. The material is suitable to contain hot engine oil of up to about 180°C without undue deterioration.
Although not shown in the drawings, the vessel 12, when ready to be marketed, will contain labels, overwrapping, or the like carrying information about the product such as a name and logo (e.g. in the form of a trade mark), user information, and the like.

The accessory kit 10 further includes a flexible bag generally indicated by reference numeral 20 containing replacement engine oil. The bag 20 may contain synthetic plastics material and NYLON. It includes discharge means generally indicated by reference numeral 22 in the form of a base 24 integrated with a wall of the bag 20 and supporting a flexible pipe 26. The bag 20 is sealed in tamper proof fashion, e.g. a free end of the pipe 26 may be sealed. It may have a circumferential line of weakness to allow it easily to be opened to allow engine oil to be poured from the bag 20 into an internal combustion engine.
The accessory kit 10 further includes a drip sheet 30 which is shown in Figure 3 at a reduced scale. It is envisaged that it will be in the order of about lm x lm and is intended to be spread on a support surface underneath the engine of which the oil is to be changed to prevent spilling or dripping of oil onto the support surface. It will be provided within the vessel 12 in folded or rolled format.
The accessory kit 10 further includes a paper cloth or napkin 32 suitable to clean a dipstick and also hands of a user.
The accessory kit 10 yet includes a sticker 34 which can be written on, for example to record an odometer reading of a vehicle including the internal combustion engine of which the engine oil has been changed by using the accessory kit. The sticker 34 will in use be applied to the engine or to such a vehicle to indicate when the oil was changed, or to indicate when a following oil change will be required.
It is to be appreciated that the accessory kit 10 can contain, in addition, or instead, a number of items, for example it may contain one or more sachets of barrier cream for use by a user of the accessory kit prior to working on the engine, sachets of liquid soap for use after the oil change has been effected, .and the like.
Advantageously, a clamp or clip or other suitable closure device may be provided selectively to close the pipe 26 for use when some of, but not all of, the oil in the bag 20 has been displaced. It is envisaged by the Applicant that the old or dirty engine oil contained in the vessel 12 will be deposited at a depository for old engine oil, such as at a filling station. To facilitate this, it is envisaged that the cover 14 will be
- 4 - leak-tight or effectively leak-tight to prevent spillage of the oil when the vessel 12 is carried. In this regard, the vessel 12 may be relatively thin- walled to render it inexpensive and disposable. Instead, if desired, it can be of more durable construction to render it reuseable. The Applicant envisages that all of the items supplied in the vessel 12 will be disposable and re-cyclable.
The Applicant regards it as an advantage that a user is enabled to buy a single package including replacement engine oil in an inexpensive container which is user friendly for discharging oil into an engine and which is disposable, that a vessel for containing the old engine oil is supplied which vessel provides a rigid packaging prior to use by an end user for ease of handling and for protection of the container of the fresh engine oil, but which is nevertheless, if desired, inexpensive enough to be disposable. It is yet further an advantage that other items, which are useable or convenient to a person changing the engine oil of an internal combustion engine, are supplied.
The Applicant envisages that this invention will predominantly be targeted at the do-it-yourself (DIY) market.
