Abstract

This invention is a portable apparatus (50) for applying cyclic pressure to veins within a person's leg by applying cyclic pressure to an outer surface of the leg. The apparatus comprises a first air chamber (40) having a flexible wall portion adapted to be situated adjacent an outer surface of the leg, and a second air chamber (51) adapted to be positioned beneath the person's heel. This second chamber (51) is compressed to force air out of it when the person's heel bears downward thereon, and returnable to its uncompressed state when the downward heel force is removed therefrom. Conduit means (57) for permitting airflow between the first, and second air chambers (51), whereby air flows from the second chamber (51) into the first chamber. Pressure is cyclically increased in the first chamber urging the wall portion against the leg when the person's heel presses downward on the second chamber (51) where air flows from the first to second chamber (51), and pressure on the leg is reduced when the person's heel stops pressing on the second chamber (51).

2. A portable apparatus or applying cyclic pressure to veins within a person's leg by applying and releasing cyclic pressure to an outer surface of said leg, each application and release of pressure being a compression cycle, said apparatus comprising a- a first air chamber having a flexible wall portion and first fastening means for releasably securing said wall portion against said outer surface of said leg, b- a second air chamber and second fastening means for releasably securing said second air chamber to the person's foot only beneath the perso ! s heel , said second chamber being compressible from uncompressed state to force air out of it as an air flow when the person's heel bears downward thereon and returnable to its uncompressed state when the downward heel force is removed therefrom, c- conduit means communicating said air flow between said first and second air chambers, whereby air flows from said second chamber to said first chamber and pressure is increased in said first chamber urging said wall portion against said leg when the person's heel presses downward on said second chamber, and air flows from said first to said second chamber and pressure on the leg is reduced when the person's heel stops pressing on said second chamber, and d- a third air chamber having a flexible wall portion and third fastener means for releasably securing said flexible wall portion of said third air chamber against an outer surface of said person's ankle, e- said conduit means further communicating air flow between said second air chamber and said third air chamber at the same time and same compression cycle as air flow between 21 said first air chamber and said second air chamber .
3. A portable apparatus for applying cyclic pressure to veins within a person's leg by applying and releasing cyclic pressure to an outer surface of said leg, each application and release of pressure being a compression cycle, said apparatus comprising a- a first air chamber having a flexible wall portion and first fastening means for releasably securing said wall portion against said outer surface of said leg, b- a second air chamber and second fastening means for releasably securing said second air chamber to the person's foot only beneath the person ' s heel , said second chamber being compressible from uncompressed state to force air out of it as an air flow when the person ' s heel bears downward thereon and returnable to its uncompressed state when the downward heel force is removed therefrom, c- conduit means communicating said air flow between said first and second air chambers, whereby air flows from said second chamber to said first chamber and pressure is increased in said first chamber urging said wall portion against said leg when the person's heel presses downward on said second chamber, and air flows from the first to second chamber and pressure on the leg is reduced when the person's heel stops pressing on said second chamber, d- a fourth air chamber having a flexible wall portion and fourth fastener means for releasably securing said flexible wall portion of said third air chamber against an outer surface of said person's instep,
22 e- said conduit means further communicating air flow between said second air chamber and said fourth air chamber at the same time and same compression cycle as air flow between said first air chamber and said second air chamber.
4. Apparatus according to claim 2 further comprising d- a fourth air chamber having a flexible wall portion and fourth fastener means for releasably securing said flexible wall portion of said third air chamber against an outer surface of said person's instep, said conduit means further communicating air flow between said second air chamber and said fourth air chamber at the same time and same compression cycle as air flow between said first air chamber and said second air chamber.
5. Apparatus according to claim 2 wherein said first and third air chambers are in mutual communication.
6. Apparatus according to claim 3 wherein said first and fourth air chambers are in mutual communication.
7. Apparatus according to claim 4 wherein said first, third and fourth air chambers are in mutual communica ion.
8. Apparatus according to claim 5 wherein said first, second, and third air chambers are formed from two generally similar sheets of substantially air impervious sheet material, situated in overlying relationship, with their peripheral edges joined together, said two sheet forming a two-ply inflatable panel having opposite side edges, said panel being
23 wrappable about a person's foot to form a boo -like enclosure.
9. Apparatus according to claim 6 wherein said first, second and fourth air chambers are formed from two generally similar sheets of substantially air- impervious sheet material, situated in overlying relationship, with their peripheral edges joined together, said two sheet forming a two-ply inflatable panel having opposite side edges, said panel being wrappable about a person's foot to form a boot-like enclosure.
10. Apparatus according to claim 6 wherein said first, second, third and fourth air chambers are formed from two generally similar sheets of substantially air-impervious sheet material, situated in overlying relationship, with their peripheral edges joined together, said two sheet forming a two-ply inflatable panel having opposite side edges, said panel being wrappable about a person ' s foot to form a boo -like enclosure.
11. Apparatus according to claim 2 wherein said second fastening means comprises a strap between said opposite edges that overlies said person's ankle.
12. Apparatus according to claim 3 wherein said third fastening means comprises : a strap between said opposite edges that overlies said person's inste .
13. Apparatus according to claim 2 wherein boot comprises a heel portion and further comprises a sole portion extending axially from said heel portion for supporting and protecting the toes of a person wearing said boo .
