Description

F AMR FOR MOUNTING A CD JEWEL BOX
The present invention relates to a frame for mounting a CD jewel box.
A compact disc (herein referred to as a "CD"), whether an audio CD, video CD, CD-ROM, etc., is typically supplied in a clear plastics case known as a jewel box. It is desirable to be able to mount the jewel box in a way which displays the jewel box and its contents. Such display may be useful as a promotional feature at for example the point-of-sale of the CD or as a gift.
A CD jewel box has a bac panel having centrally positioned tabs which engage with the central aperture of the CD. The CD jewel box further has a front panel or lid hinged to the back panel. The lid has side walls in which are formed tabs which project inwardly of the side walls parallel to the plane of the lid. These tabs in the side walls of the lid are used to retain a pamphlet in the lid, the pamphlet typically having material printed thereon relating to the contents of the CD. In order to form the tabs in the lid, a moulding machine for moulding the lid has inserts which project through the side walls. Thus, the tabs in the lid are associated with apertures in the side wall . This is indicated in Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings which shows a portion of a lid 1 of a CD jewel box. The lid 1 has side walls 2. Two of the side walls 2 which oppose each other have tabs 3 formed therein, one tab 3 being shown in Figure 1. As a result of the moulding process, a through hole 4 is formed in the side walls 2 adjacent to each of the tabs 3. CD jewel boxes have varying numbers of such tabs, there typically being two, four or six such tabs.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a frame for mounting a CD jewel box, the frame having means for engaging in apertures in side walls of a lid of a CD jewel box to enable a CD jewel box to be mounted in said frame.
The present invention utilises the apertures typically found in a CD jewel box to enable the CD jewel box to be mounted in the frame in a simple manner. The frame can be arranged so that the contents of the CD jewel box can be viewed. The CD jewel box is easily removed from the frame when required. The frame can be arranged so that access to a CD in the jewel box can be had.
The engaging means may comprise at least one tab arranged to be received in an aperture in a side wall of a lid of a CD jewel box.
The engaging means preferably comprises a plurality of tabs each arranged to be received in a respective aperture in side walls of a lid of a CD jewel box.
Preferably, the frame has a pair of opposed walls defining a recess or opening therebetween, each wall having a tab which opposes a corresponding tab on the opposite wall such that a CD jewel box can be mounted in the recess or opening by engagement of said tabs in apertures in side walls of a lid of the CD jewel box.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided in combination, a CD jewel box and a frame for mounting the CD jewel box, the CD jewel box comprising a lid having side walls, each of said side walls having an aperture therein, the frame having means for engaging in said apertures to mount the CD jewel box in the frame . In the combination, the engaging means may comprise at least one tab arranged to be received in an aperture in a side wall of the lid of the CD jewel box.
In the combination, the engaging means preferably comprises a plurality of tabs each arranged to be received in a respective aperture in the side walls of the lid of the CD jewel box.
In the combination, the frame preferably has a pair of opposed walls defining a recess or opening therebetween, each wall having a tab which opposes a corresponding tab on the opposite wall such that the CD jewel box can be mounted in the recess or opening by engagement of said tabs in the apertures in side walls of a lid of the CD jewel box.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 shows a portion of a lid of a CD jewel box;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of an example of a frame according to the present invention;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of an example of a blank from which a frame according to the present invention can be formed;
Fig. 4 is a view of the rear of a frame being formed from the blank of Figure 3;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a portion the frame of Figure 4 ;
Fig . 6 is a perspective view of the rear of the frame with a CD j ewel box mounted therein; and, Fig. 7 is a view from the rear of the frame in an alternative configuration.
Referring to the drawings, a rectangular or square frame 10 for mounting a CD jewel box has four side walls 11 which define a rectangular or square central opening 12. Instead of an opening 12, the side walls 11 may define a recess of rectangular or square cross-section, the recess being deep enough to contain a CD jewel box mounted in the frame 10.
Two opposed side walls 11 of the frame 10 each have two spaced apart semicircular tabs 13 formed on their innermost edges 14. The two tabs 13 on one side wall 11 oppose the two tabs 13 on the other side wall 11. More or less than two tabs 13 may be provided on each side wall, depending on how many apertures 4 are provided in the side wall 2 of a CD jewel box to be mounted in the frame 10. The tabs 13 project inwardly of the side walls 11 on which the tabs 13 are formed into the central opening 12 and lie parallel to the plane of the frame 10.
The size of the frame 10 and the central opening 12 and the size and arrangement of the tabs 13 are all such that a CD jewel box can be mounted in the frame 10 by placing the jewel box in the central opening 12 and "snapping" the tabs 13 into the corresponding apertures 4 in the side walls 2 of the lid 1 of the jewel box. The engagement of the tabs 13 with the apertures 4 in the lid 1 of the jewel box retains the lid 1, and therefore the jewel box as a whole, in the frame 10. The contents of the jewel box can be readily viewed. Access to a CD contained in the jewel box is normally possible as the jewel box can be opened from the rear by hinging open the back panel of the CD jewel box behind the frame 10. Several such frames 10 can be formed together, in series or in an array for example, so that plural CD jewel boxes can be mounted and displayed together.
The frame 10 can be formed from a blank 20, an example of which is shown in Figure 3. In the drawing, crease lines are indicated by dashed lines and cuts are indicated by solid lines. The blank 20 is planar and can be made of any suitable material such as thick cardboard, polypropylene, etc. The blank 20 is circular with the side walls 11 of the frame 10 being defined by two sets of rectangular crease lines 21 within the circular periphery of the blank 20. Inside the innermost crease lines 21, the blank 20 is cut to provide four inner flaps 22 which can fold about the respective innermost crease lines 21. Semicircular cut-outs 23 are formed in two of the inner flaps 22 adjacent two opposed innermost crease lines 21 to provide the tabs 13 of the frame 10. The portions of the blank 20 outside the outermost crease lines 21 provide four outer flaps 24. Each of three of the outer flaps 24 has a slit 25.
As shown in Figure 4, the frame 10 is formed by folding the inner flaps 22 of the blank 20 about the respective innermost crease lines 21. The outer flaps 24 are folded about the outermost crease lines 21 to meet the inner flaps 22. The free edges 25 of three of the inner flaps 22 are formed with tabs 26 which pass through the slits 25 in the corresponding outer flaps 24 to lock those inner flaps 22 to those outer flaps 24. The fourth inner flap 22 has an extended tab 27 which can be used as a stand 27 of the frame 10 as shown in Figure 5. The stand tab 27 has a tongue 28 formed therein which can be bent back and passed partially through a part circular aperture or slit 29 in the corresponding outer flap 24 to lock the stand tab 27 in position. The outermost edge of that flap 24 has a T-shape tab 30 pre-cut therein which passed through the aperture 31 provided by the tongue 28 to help lock the stand tab 27 in the proper configuration.
In Figure 6 there is shown the assembled frame 10 with a CD jewel box 5 mounted therein by means of the tabs 13 of the frame passing through the apertures 4 adjacent the tabs 3 of the lid 1 of the box 5. As can be seen, in this example, the pamphlet 6 usually provided with the CD jewel box 5 can be removed from the lid 1 without having to remove the CD jewel box 5 from the frame 10. Furthermore, in this example, the back panel 7 of the CD jewel box 5 can be hinged open to allow a CD 8 to be removed or inserted without having to remove the CD jewel box 5 from the frame 10.
In an alternative configuration shown in Figure 7, the stand tab 27 and the tongue 28 are folded towards the opposite outer flap 24 and the tongue 28 passed partially through a part circular aperture or slit 32 in the opposite outer flap 24 to lock the stand tab 27 in position. The
T-shape tab 30 can be passed through the aperture 31 in the stand tab 27 to lock the stand tab 27 in position. In this configuration, the frame 10 can be suspended on a wall, for example, by a hook passing through a part-circular or oval aperture 33 in the tongue 28.
An embodiment of the present invention has been described with particular reference to the example illustrated. However, it will be appreciated that variations and modifications may be made to the example described within the scope of the present invention.
