Abstract
The present invention provides a method and apparatus for performing variable gain optical communications. In one embodiment of the present invention a transceiver (52) capable of variable gain optical communications is disclosed. A variable gain optical transceiver (52) includes a receiver (60), a transmitter (90) and a variable gain controller (70). The receiver receives a first electromagnetic communication at a received power level. Based upon the received power level of the first electromagnetic communication, the variable gain controller determines whether a transmitted power level of the second electromagnetic communication should be adjusted. The transmitter transmits the second electromagnetic communication at the transmitted power level.
