Abstract

A dual axis display input device having a first axis roller (14) and a second axis roller (18) located so close that both axis rollers can be rotated simultaneously by one finger touch to simultaneously change positional information in a first and second axes. Both rollers are connected to interface electronics by a transducer. A spring-loaded momentary contact switch (44), preferably connected to rollers, provides a first switch signal. Optional second spring-loaded momentary contact switch (48) is included to provide a second switch signal. Further handheld embodiment comprises a microphone (26) able to receive audio speech and converting it to audio speech signal and forwarding it to a host device. One embodiment comprises a pair of rollers at the end of an elongated housing (10) connected to a ball (19). The combination of a dual axis display input device with the second embodiment's ball (19) at the end of the housing (10) provides a four dimension input device.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS[received by the International Bureau on 19 May 1999 (19.05.99); original claims 1-23 replaced by amended claims 1-21 (4 pages)]
1. A finger actuated display peripheral interface input device comprising:
(a) a housing;
(b) a first axis roller for inputting positional information for a first axis, (c) a first transducer coupled to said first axis roller for producing a first signal indicative of the rotation of said first axis roller;
(d) a second axis roller for inputting positional information for a second axis;
(e) a second transducer coupled to said second axis roller producing a second signal indicative of the rotation of said second axis roller; and (f) a first switch adapted to produce a first switch signal upon actuation of said first switch;
(g) said first axis roller and said second axis rollers being selectively rotatable for selectively inputting positional infoπnation for the first axis or for the second axis respectively; and (h) said first axis roller and said second axis roller being located so close to each other that both axis rollers can be rotated simultaneously by a touch of one finger to simultaneously change positional information in said first and second axes.
2. The input device of claim 1 having a second switch coupled to said control circuit and adapted to produce a second switch signal upon actuation of said second switch.
3. The input device of claim 1 wherein said device is so constructed that pressure against one or both of the rollers and downward movement of said roller bed relative to the housing causes actuation of at least said first switch.
4. The input device of claim 1 wherein said housing is independent from a stationary surface being able to hold in user's hand between fingers.
5. The input device of claim 4 further comprising a microphone able to receive audio speech and converting it to audio speech signal and forwarding it to a host device.
6. The input device of claim 1 wherein said housing is a portable computer and said first and second axis rollers are located on the side of the housing facing a user,
7. The input device of claim 1 wherein said housing is a portable telephone and said first and second axis rollers are coupled to move cursor on telephone display.
8. The input device of claim 1 wherein said housing is a TV remote control and said first and second axis rollers are coupled to move cursor on TV display. 1 7
9. The input device of claim 1 wherein said housing is a computer keyboard
10. The input device of claim 1 wherein said housing can be mounted to a spoke of a steering wheel to control at least an audio device and make selections by a driver.
11. The input device of claim 1 embedded to a joystick.
12. The input device of claim 1 wherein the thickness of said first and second axis rollers differentiate.
13. The input device of claim 1 wherein said rollers have structured surface elements.
14. The input device of claim 13, wherein said structured surface elements are grooves.
15. The input device of claim 13 wherein said structured surface elements are threads.
16. Handhold display peripheral interface input device comprising:
(a) an elongated housing suitable to be held by pressing a first surface of the housing with a thumb, a second surface of the housing with a forefinger, and a third surface of the housing with a middle finger.
(b) a ball rotably embedded to the lower end of said housing;
(c) a first roller for inputting positional information for a first axis;
(d) a first transducer coupled to said first roller for producing a first signal indicative of the rotation of said first roller;
(e) a second roller for inputting positional information for a second axis;
(f) a second transducer coupled to said second roller for producing a second signal indicative of the rotation of said second roller; said ball being coupled to said first and second rollers in such manner that a rotational movement of said ball relative to said housing causes a corresponding rotational movement selectively of one or both of said first and second rollers; and
(g) a first switch adapted to produce a first switch signal upon actuation of the first switch.
17. The input device of claim 16 wherein said first switch is positioned adjacent to said first and second rollers to be engaged by the pressure caused by a user to said ball to actuate said first switch.
18. The input device of claim 16 further comprising:
(b) a third axis roller for inputting positional information for a third axis; 1 8
(c) a third transducer coupled to said third axis roller for producing a third signal indicative of the rotation of said third axis roller;
(d) a fourth axis roller for inputting positional information for a fourth axis;
(e) a fourth transducer coupled to said fourth axis roller producing a fourth signal indicative of the rotation of said fourth axis roller; and
(f) a first switch adapted to produce a first switch signal upon being actuated;
(g) said first axis roller and said second axis rollers being selectively rotatable for selectively inputting positional information for the first axis or for the second axis, respectively; and (h) said first axis roller and said second axis roller being located so close to each other that both axis rollers can be rotated simultaneously by a touch of one finger to simultaneously change positional information in said first and second axes.
19. A Microcontroller based device comprising:
(a) Memory to save predetermined announcements; (b) A roller for inputting positional information for a first axis, supported by a roller bed;
(c) A plurality of selection options on a rotational path of said roller to make selections.
(d) At least one speaker to audibly announce selection options saved in said memory when said roller is rotated on a selection option and said option is activated;
(e) At least one user operated switch to make selections when said selection option is activated.
20. A microcontroller based device of claim 19 further comprising a second roller for inputting positional information for second axis; and wherein;
(a) said plurality of general selection options are arranged on a rotational path of said first roller; and
(b) where in a plurality of sub-options are arranged on a rotational path of said second roller and are able to be activated by rotating said second roller on a desired option after the selection of said general selection option and making a sub-selection by activation said user operated switch.
21. A microcontroller based device of claim 20, further comprising a visual display with a cursor whose movement represents the movement of said first and second rollers 1 9 showing the main selection options and their sub-options.
