Description
GEAR DISPLAY
This invention relates to a Gear Display and this Gear Display is a display showing the gear number in which motor vehicle (car, minibus, truck etc.) moves and the ideal (optimum) gear number for current speed in analog or digital way. The Gear Display have an electronic microprocessor and shows current gear and ideal (optimum) gear information by using data taken from speed and motor revolution displays.
The Gear Display is a new invention. This invention have two main targets. The first target is to provide driving ease and comfort to motor vehicle drivers. While driving their motor vehicles the drivers often have to change gear because of continuous speeding up and slowing down in traffic. The drivers forget the gear number in which motor vehicle moves and they don't know the ideal (optimum) gear number of the vehicle for that moment becase of traffic jam and physical tiredness and therefore the drivers find current gear number by trial and error method and seek gear number appropriate to vehicle's speed by prediction. The Gear Display removes all of this ambiguity and shows the gear number in which motor vehicle moves and the ideal (optimum) gear number for current speed in analog or digital way. Thus, the Gear Display provides driving ease and comfort to motor vehicle drivers.
The second target of this invention is to provide motor vehicle drivers to drive their vehicles at ideal (optimum) gear. The drivers have to change their vehicles' speeds to the speed of traffic which changes continuously. For this puφose, the drivers have difficulty in determining the gear number which provides the right motor revolution number for current speed of the vehicle and efficient motor usage. Wrong gear choice makes motor work under or over ideal (optimum) revolution number and this causes detonation in motor or more fuel consumption. The Gear Display shows ideal (optimum) gear number for current speed in analog or digital way and thus, it provides that the driver selects the right gear number and therefore motor will work at right revolution and motor's life will be longer and motor will consume less fuel .
The Gear Display have an electronic microprocessor. This microprocessor processes data taken directly from digital speed and motor revolution displays or data changed to digital from analog speed and motor revolution displays by using the following example algorithm and this microprocessor obtains current gear and ideal (optimum) gear information and the Gear Display shows this information as digital directly or as analog by changing.
It is assumed that the motor vehicle, which uses example algorithm in its Gear Display, have the following characteristics:
- 5 forward gears
- Ideal (optimum) motor revolution number : 3000 revolutions/minute
- Speed (km/hour) that is provided by a gear at ideal (optimum) motor revolution number (3000 revolutions/minute) :
I St
1 gear : 20 km/hour
>nd gear : 40 km/hour
,rd gear : 60 km/hour 4 <tlh" gear : 75 km/hour
5th gear : 90 km/hour
According to the above assumptions, the information in the example algorithm are as follows :
How to Information Unit Given name obtain information
-Instantaneous speed of vehicle km/hour Speed Entry
-Instantaneous revolution number of motor rev./minute Revolution Entry -Ideal (optimum) motor revolution
(Accept as 3000 ) rev./minute Ideal Revolution Entry

- Speed of 1st gear at ideal (optimum) motor revolution
(Accept as 20 ) km/hour Speed at 1 St Gear Entry - Speed of 2nd gear at ideal (optimum) motor revolution nd
(Accept as 40 ) km/hour Speed at 2™ Gear Entry
How to
Information Unit Given name obtain information
- Speed of 3rd gear at ideal (optimum) motor revolution (Accept as 60 ) km/hour Speed at 3rd Gear Entry
- Speed of 4th gear at ideal (optimum) motor revolution
(Accept as 75 ) km/hour Speed at 4 th Gear Entry
- Speed of 5th gear at ideal (optimum) motor revolution
(Accept as 90 ) km/hour Speed at 5 rtιhπ Gear Entry
- Current gear number unitless Current Gear Calculation
- Ideal (optimum) gear number unitless Ideal Gear Calculation
The electronic microprocessor in the Gear Display uses the following algorithm :
1- Take Speed 2- Take Revolution
3- Speed at Ideal Revolution = (Ideal Revolution x Speed) / Revolution
4- Compare Speed at Ideal Revolution with Speed at each Gear and when you find equal Speed at one Gear, go to the following step
5- Current Gear = Number of Gear that has been found in the 4 *th step 6- Write Current Gear 7- Compare Speed with Speed at each Gear and when you find the nearest Speed at Gear, go to the following step
8- Ideal Gear = Number of Gear that has been found in the 7 -rt"h step
9- Write Ideal Gear
10- Go to 1st step
The Gear Display works in the following steps for the above motor vehicle having the following Speed and Revolution :
1- Speed = 60 km/hour
2- Revolution = 4500 rev./minute
3- Speed at Ideal Revolution = ( 3000 x 60 ) / 4500 = 40 km/hour
4- 40 km/hour, which is Speed at Ideal Revolution, equals to Speed at 2nd Gear .
5- Current Gear = 2
6- The Gear Display shows 2 as Current Gear directly in digital way or by changing it into analog way.
7- Speed = Speed at 3rd Gear = 60 km/hour
8- Ideal Gear = 3 9- The Gear Display shows 3 as Ideal Gear directly in digital way or by changing it into analog way. 10- Go to 1st step
In the above example, the driver gets the information from the Gear Display that he (she) drives the motor vehicle at 2nd Gear at that moment and that Ideal Gear is 3rd Gear and he (she) changes the gear of the motor vehicle to 3rd Gear.
