Abstract

A system for providing remote access and control of electronic devices connected to a CEBus network includes a remotely located master node, e.g., a utility server controller, which is linked to the CEBus network via an ATM-based broadband access network ('BAN'). A proxy node is provided on the CEBus network, wherein the proxy node is also linked to the master node via the BAN. The proxy node includes a power monitoring module, which constantly monitors the power supply to the proxy node, e.g., of a residential home at which the proxy node is located. In the case of a power failure, the monitoring module detects the failure and notifies a power outage module. The power outage module generates a power failure alarm message, which is forwarded to the master node in the form of a CEBus link protocol data unit ('LPDU'). In particular, the proxy node packetizes the LPDU alarm message into ATM transmission format for transport to the master node over the BAN. Upon receipt of the LPDU alarm message, the master node notifies the appropriate utility company about the power failure, based on specific identifying information contained in the LPDU alarm message.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS[received by the International Bureau on 16 December 1998 (16.12.98); original claims 1-15 replaced by amended claims 1-13 (3 pages)]
1. A system for monitoring a power supply on a CEBus network, comprising: a network terminal located on the CEBus network, the network terminal comprising power monitoring circuitry configured to detect a failure of the power supply, wherein the network terminal is configured to generate a specified CEBus message upon detection of a power failure, and then transmit the specified CEBus message over a non- CEBus network.
2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the network terminal is a utility managed settable node.
3. The system of claim 1, wherein the non-CEBus network is an ATM-based broadband access network ("BAN"), and wherein the network terminal is further configured to reformat CEBus messages for ATM transmission over the BAN.
4. The system of claim 1, further comprising a master node configured for receiving CEBus messages from the network terminal over the non-CEBus network.
5. The system of claim 4, wherein the master node is a utility host master node.
6. The system for notifying a remotely located master node of a power failure occurring on a CEBus network, comprising: a network terminal located on the CEBus network, the network terminal comprising power monitoring circuitry configured to detect a power failure on the CEBus network, and means for generating a specified CEBus link protocol data unit ("LPDU") upon detection of a power failure on the CEBus network.
7. The system of claim 6, wherein the network terminal is a utility managed settable node, and wherein the master node is a utility host master node.
8. The system of claim 6, wherein the network terminal further comprising means for reformatting LPDUs for transmission to the master node over an ATM-based access network.
9. The system of claim 6, wherein the master node is configured to notify a selected utility company upon receipt of an LPDU indicating that a power failure has occurred on the CEBus network.
10. The method for notifying a remotely located master node of a power failure occurring on a CEBus network, comprising the steps of: monitoring the CEBus network at a terminal located thereon to detect a power failure; generating a specified CEBus message at the terminal upon detection of a power failure on the CEBus network; and transmitting the specified CEBus message from the terminal to the master node over a non-CEBus network.
11. The method of claim 10, wherein the specified CEBus message is transmitted as a standard CEBus link protocol data unit.
12. The method αf claim 10, wherein the non-CEBus network is an ATM-based broadband access network ("BAN"), and wherein the terminal is configured to reformat the specified CEBus message for ATM transmission over the BAN.
13. The method of claim 10, wherein the terminal is a utility managed settable node, and wherein the master node is a utility host master node.
