Abstract
A shampoo package comprises two or more containers for shampoos, the first container containing a first shampoo having at least one non-volatile component which causes build-up of residue on the hair on repeated use, the second container containing a second hair treatment preparation which is of different composition from the first. The persons washing their hair can use on shampoo for a period of time, switching to the second shampoo to reduce any build-up of the residues due to the first shampoo thereby preventing or reducing build-up of residues of the shampoo in their hair and maintaining their hair in a satisfactory condition.
Description
PACKAGE FOR LIQUID HAIR TREATMENT The present invention relates to products for hair treatment such as hair shampoos, conditioners and dyes, etc.
The invention provides a package comprising a plurality of separate or separable containers for liquid hair treatment preparations (e.g. shampoos or conditioners) wherein [a] a first container contains a first liquid hair treatment preparation having at least one non-volatile component which causes build-up of first residue (s) on the hair on repeated use and [b] a second container contains a second hair treatment preparation which is of different composition from the first and subsequent use of which removes at least part of said first residue.
I have found unexpectedly that residues are left on hair by prolonged (repeated) use of a single shampoo or other hair treatment liquid and result in unsatisfactory hair condition. The present invention remedies this problem by providing for prevention or reduction or removal of residue build-up.
The residues of hair treatment products may come from surfactants in the products, which surfactants are selected from anionic, nonionic and amphoteric surfactants; surfactants used in hair shampoos and conditioners etc. include for example fatty acid monoethanolamides and diethanolamides, sodium alkyl sulphates, polyoxyethylene sodium alkyl sulphates, alkyldimethylaminoacetic acid, betaine, sodium N-acyl-N-glutamates, and alkyldimethylamine oxide; these may be present singly or in combination of two or more.
In addition to surfactants, hair shampoos and conditioners etc. may also contain non-volatile colorants,
buffers, pearl-lustre agents, protein hydrolyzates, thickening agents, and preservatives.
Residues of these components left on hair due to prolonged use of a particular product may be detected in hair samples, for example by extraction of the residue and analysis by using high pressure liquid chromotography (HPLC) with ultraviolet (UV) detection. The chromotography separates the components and amounts of these are measured by the UV detector; two or more UV wavelengths may be used to improve the range of residues detected. The identities of particular residue components can be detected. By subsequently treating the hair with a selected particular different shampoo or conditioner etc, the residue (s) from the first product can be reduced or removed. This can also be detected by HPLC and UV methods.
In packages according to one aspect of the invention a first container contains one shampoo including (among other ingredients) a surfactant or surfactant combination while the second container contains a second shampoo including (among other components) a different surfactant or surfactant combination so that build up of surfactant residue caused by prolonged use of the first shampoo can be reduced or removed by the subsequent use of the second shampoo .
Pairs of shampoos that may be used in combination to display the effect of the invention are as follows: WELLA WITH LIQUID HAIR (trademark) and PANTENE PRO V SHAMPOO (trademark); CHARLES WORTHINGTON (trademark) and ASSIE MEGA SHAMPOO (trademark); ORGANICS SHAMPOO (trademark) and TIMOTEI (trademark); L'OREAL ELVIVE REVITALISING SHAMPOO (trademark) and PANTENE PRO V (trademark); WELLA BALSAM EXTRA RICH SHAMPOO (trademark) and GARNIER NEUTRALIA DERMO PROTECTION HEALTHY HAIR SHAMPOO (trademark); ALBERTO BALSAM
EXTRA VOLUMISING BODY (trademark) and NEUTROGENA SHAMPOO (trademark); and REVLON FLEX EXTRA BODY SHAMPOO (trademark) and JOHNSONS P.H. 5.5 (trademark) . For each pair of shampoos listed, use of the first shampoo will reduce residue of the second shampoo left on hair caused by use of the second shampoo.
An example embodying the invention comprises a presentation package - e.g. a sealed or secure housing," or a box or bubble pack etc - comprising two separate shampoo containers. Each container includes a different shampoo, the combination of shampoos chosen so that use of one shampoo will reduce residue of the other shampoo left on hair caused by use of the other shampoo.
The two containers may be joined seperably or inseperably. Shampoo is dispensed from one container at a time without mixing with the other shampoo. Joined containers might have a dispenser which can only engage with, and hence dispense, shampoo from one container at a time.
The person washing their hair can use one shampoo for a period of time, switching to the second shampoo to reduce any build up of the residues due to the first shampoo thereby preventing or reducing build up of residues of the shampoo in their hair and maintaining their hair in a satisfactory condition.
The package size can be chosen so that the first shampoo will run out shortly before build up of residue from the first shampoo causes unsatisfactory hair condition.
It is also envisaged that using the invention one can alternate which shampoo is used, for example every day or every week.
Claims
1. A package comprising a plurality of containers for liquid hair treatment preparations wherein [a] a first container contains a first liquid hair treatment preparation having at least one non-volatile component which causes build-up of first residue (s) on the hair on repeated use and [b] a second container contains a second hair treatment preparation which is of different composition from the fi-rst and subsequent use of which removes at least part of said first residue.
2. A package according to claim 1 wherein the first liquid hair treatment preparation includes (among other ingredients) a surfactant or surfactant combination while the second liquid hair treatment preparation includes (among other components) a different surfactant or surfactant combination so that build up of surfactant residue caused by prolonged use of the first liquid hair treatment preparation can be reduced or removed by the subsequent use of the second liquid hair treatment preparation.
3. A package according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the first liquid hair treatment preparation is a shampoo.
4. A package according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the first liquid hair treatment preparation is a conditioner.
5. A package according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the plurality of containers are separate or separable.
