Abstract

A process for producing a polyester comprising as repeated units: (i) residues of at least one aliphatic hydroxycarboxylic acid or a carboxylic acid derivative thereof; or (ii) residues of (a) at least one aliphatic dicarboxylic acid or a carboxylic acid derivative thereof, (b) at least one aliphatic diol or polyol, and optionally (c) at least one aliphatic hydroxycarboxylic acid or a carboxylic acid derivative thereof; which process comprises reacting the components defined in (i) or components defined in (ii) in the presence of a lipase and optionally in the presence of water such that the molar ratio of acid groups to hydroxyl groups in the reactants is 1:1 to 1:1.1 and wherein bound enzyme is removed from the reaction mixture and is then used in a further polymerisation of components defined in (i) or (ii).
