  • locking assembly 18 is preferably substantially surrounded by magazine well 14 and is nearly completely enclosed thereby. This arrangement makes it nearly impossible to forcibly disengage locking assembly 18 from the chamber pin element 16 without simultaneously damaging firearm 5 to an extent which prevents it from being used in a normal manner.
  • Locking assembly 18 preferably comprises a hardened lock body 20 in which is disposed a pin tumbler lock 22. Suitable rotation of pin tumbler lock 22 with an appropriate key (not shown) rotates an actuation member 24.
  • Actuation member 24 preferably comprises a threaded eccentric member 26 which may be raised and lowered generally along an axis 28 upon rotation of pin tumbler lock 22. When chamber pin element 16 is slid in the direction of an arrow 15, actuation member 24 may be selectively engaged with a surface 30 formed in chamber pin element 16.
  • Actuation member 24 may be completely lowered and disengaged from chamber pin element 16, in which case chamber pin element 16 is free to slide with respect to locking assembly 18 along a track 32.
  • track 32 may be trapezoidally shaped, although it is appreciated that other shapes may be employed as well.
  • a stop 33 may be provided for limiting sliding travel of chamber pin element 16 with respect to locking assembly 18.
  • Chamber pin element 16 comprises at least one lug 34, most preferably a pair of lugs 34, which upon actuation of lock 10 protrudes from chamber pin element 16 and fixedly abuts against an inner surface of chamber 12, thereby lockingly retaining chamber pin element 16 in chamber 12, as will be described hereinbelow.
  • Chamber pin element 16 preferably includes a plunger 36 slidingly disposed in a bore 38 formed in a housing 40.
  • Plunger 36 preferably includes a proximal portion 42 and a distal portion 44.
  • Distal portion 44 has a larger cross section than proximal portion 42.
  • Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate lock 10 in an orientation wherein actuation member 24 contacts a proximally facing surface 31 of chamber pin element 16 and lugs 34 contact a portion of proximal portion 42. It is seen that lugs 34 do not protrude outwards of housing 40.
  • Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate lock 1U assembled in firearms 5. Chamber pin element 16 has been slid in the direction of arrow 15.
  • actuation member 24 may be selectively actuated to move plunger 36 with respect to lugs 34.
  • actuation member 24 has moved plunger in the direction of an arrow 46 thereby to move distal portion 44 into contact with lugs 34.
  • this causes lugs 34 to protrude from housing 40 of chamber pin element 16 and fixedly abut against an inner surface 48 of chamber 12, thereby lockingly retaining chamber pin element 16 in chamber 12.
  • Inner surface 48 may comprise, or is at least in propinquity to, an existing depression formed in chamber 12 for receiving a base portion of a cartridge (not shown).
  • unlocking actuation of lock 10 comprises rotating actuation member 24 to move proximal portion 42 of plunger 36 in the direction of arrow 15, opposite to arrow 46, so that proximal portion 42 is brought into contact with lugs 34 and lugs 34 do not protrude from housing 40.
  • Anti-tampering mechanism 50 preferably includes a pair of biased detents 52, which may be biased against each other with a spring 54. Detents 52 are positioned at an end 56 of distal portion 44. A spring 58 preferably presses against end 56 in the direction of arrow 46.
  • detents 52 are normally positioned distally (i.e., in the direction of arrow 15) of a pair of corresponding grooves 60 formed in housing 40.
  • spring 58 forces plunger 36 to move in the direction of arrow 46 so that detents substantially fixedly protrude into grooves 60, thereby substantially fixing plunger 36 with respect to lugs 34 and fixing lugs 34 in a position wherein lugs 34 contact distal portion 44 and fixedly abut against inner surface 48 (Fig. 6) of chamber 12, thereby lockingly retaining chamber pin element 16 in chamber 12.
