Abstract
A coil assembly (44) for use in an optical or a magneto-optical data storage system having a slider (37) and an optical assembly (40), includes a dielectric substrate (52). The coil (50) is either bonded to, or formed on the dielectric substrate, and terminates in two bonding pads. In one embodiment the dielectric substrate is flexible and is made of alumina. The coil is surface mounted on the underside of an optical assembly and/or a slider by means of available techniques, such as an adhesive. The coil assembly includes two tooling, alignment and handling holes, and an optical passage (100) defined at the center of the coil for allowing an optical beam to pass through. The coil assembly has compact, low mass, and high vertical magnetic field characteristics, and allows direct overwrite at a low flying height, with precise control of the focal plane of the optical assembly.

20. A method of securing a coil assembly to an optical assembly, comprising: forming a coil on a substrate by means of a wafer processing technique; and mounting said coil on the optical assembly.
21. A coil assembly for use with a support element having an underside, the coil assembly comprising: a substrate; a coil formed by means of wafer processing technique on said substrate; said coil being surface mounted at least in part, on the optical assembly; and said coil being sandwiched at least in part between said substrate and the support element.
22. A coil assembly for use with a support element having an underside and an optical assembly, the coil assembly comprising: a substrate; a coil formed by means of wafer processing technique on said substrate; and said coil being sandwiched at least in part between said substrate and the support element underside, or between said substrate and the optical assembly.
23. A coil assembly according to any of claims 21 or 22, wherein said coil includes a magnetic yoke; and wherein said magnetic yoke is surface mounted on the optical assembly.
24. A coil assembly according to any of claims 21 to 23, wherein said substrate is surface mounted on the optical assembly.
25. A coil assembly according to any of claims 21 to 24, wherein said substrate includes a substantially rigid dielectric film and a tab.
26. A method of securing a coil assembly to an optical or a magneto-optical data storage system including a support element having an underside, and an optical assembly, the method comprising: forming a coil on a substrate by means of a wafer processing technique; and
mounting said coil at least in part on any of the underside of the support element or the optical assembly by sandwiching said coil at least in part between said substrate and the support element underside, or between said substrate and the optical assembly.
27. A method according to claim 26, wherein mounting said coil includes surface mounting said coil in part on the support member underside and in part on the optical assembly.
28. A method according to claim 26, wherein said coil includes a magnetic yoke; and wherein mounting said coil includes surface mounting said magnetic yoke on any of the support element underside or the optical assembly.
29. A method according to claim 26, wherein said coil includes a magnetic yoke; and wherein mounting said coil includes surface mounting said magnetic yoke in part on the support member underside and in part on the optical assembly.
30. A method according to any of claims 26 to 29, further including the step of surface mounting said substrate on any of the support element underside or the optical assembly.
