Abstract

A drive mechanism (10) is provided for converting linear motion into rotary motion. The drive mechanism (10) includes a slider (12) which is linearly movable in response to linear actuation. A rotatably mounted helical member (14) is connected to the slider (12) such that linear movement of the slider (12) causes rotation of the helical member (14). A clutch (28) may be connected to one end of the helical member (14) and surrounded by a pinion gear (30). The clutch (28) is arranged so that, when the helical member (14) rotates in a first rotary direction, the clutch (28) drives the pinion gear (30) in the same rotational direction. However, when the helical member (14) rotates in an opposite direction, the clutch (28) disengages the rotation of the helical member (14) from the pinion gear (30).
