Definitions
- the invention relates to a hinge comprising a hinge strap and an element chosen from the group formed by a hinge hook and a hinge plate, cooperating with the hinge strap.
- a hinge is generally known and is mainly used as exterior metal work for heavy gates and doors .
- Such gates and doors are fitted with a hinge strap which can either cooperate with a hinge hook mounted in a fixed wall, or may be part of a hinge wherein a hinge plate is used which is mounted on a fixed supporting wall.
- a problem with heavy exterior metal work of this kind is that it is usually not sufficiently secured against lifting the hinge strap off the hinge hook or removing the hinge pen coupling the hinge plate and the hinge strap. Thus, most of the cases it is simple to remove the door or gate in question.
- the hinge according to the invention is designed such that it is provided with a plate coupled to the hinge strap, which plate is provided with a projection extending substantially perpendicularly from the plate, and with feed- through apertures for connecting means .
- This plate coupled with the hinge strap is to be fastened at the side of the door or gate that falls inside the door frame in such a manner that the projection points to the door frame. When the door or gate is closed this projection will project into a recess in the door frame, so that it acts as security lock.
- Another advantage of this construction is that it increases the rigidity of the hinge strap construction, so that the hinge strap is less inclined to buckle in the horizontal plane .
- a simple embodiment of the projection is formed by setting a portion of the plate such as to form an angle. A portion may then at the same time be set in the opposite direction such that a solid connection is provided between the plate and the door or gate .
- the projection is a pen which is received in an opening of the plate, and that both the pen and the opening in the plate are provided with thread whereby turning the pen moves same in its longitudinal direction in the opening of the plate. In this manner the projection can simply be adapted to the available recess in the door frame.
- the plate has an end which is T-shaped in the same plane as the plate, while the hinge strap is provided with a slot to receive the T-shaped end of the plate.
- a second preferred embodiment is characterized in that the plate is provided with a slot to receive the hinge strap.
- this plate can also easily be used when the hinges are already mounted. If such a hinge comprises a hinge hook, and therefore one end of the hinge strap is set to form a ring suitable to cooperate with the hinge hook, then the slot has to be large enough to pass the portion of the hinge strap forming a ring, through it.
- all the described embodiments of the hinge comprise an auxiliary plate which serves to be mounted on the door frame and which is provided with an aperture for passing through the projection extending from the plate that is coupled with the hinge strap. Such an auxiliary plate provides an extra obstruction to breaking- in.
- the plate having perpendicularly extending projections is preferably also provided with feed-through apertures for the hinge pen.
- Another preferred embodiment is thus characterized in that the auxiliary plate is joined at right angles with the hinge plate .
- FIG. 1A and IB show a front view and a top view respectively of a first embodiment of the hinge according to the invention.
- the represented hinge comprises a hinge strap 1 and a hinge plate 2 coupled to one another by means of a hinge pen 3. Also coupled to these parts is a plate 4 (see Fig. 1C) which at one end is provided with a portion 5 set such as to form a right angle.
- Figs 2A and 2B also show a hinge in side view and top view respectively, which hinge comprises a hinge strap 1 as well as hinge plate 2 and a hinge pen 3 coupling the hinge strap and the hinge plate with each other.
- the hinge plate 2 is fur- nished with an auxiliary plate 7 having an angular portion
- This auxiliary plate 7 serves to be fastened to the inside of the door frame.
- the hinge also comprises a plate 4 (see
- Fig. 2D for fastening to the side of a door and is optio- nally provided with a projection 9.
- the intended function of break-in prevention is achieved by a pen 5 extending perpendicularly from the surface of plate 4.
- said pen 5 as well as an opening in the plate 4 which receives the pen, are provided with thread, so that by turning the pen 5 it moves in its longitudinal direction in the opening of the plate 4.
- Figs . 3A and 3B show a completely different kind of hinge, wherein hinge strap portions 1A and IB are used which are coupled to one another by means of a pen (for a side view see Fig. 3A and for a top view Fig. 3B) .
- a plate 4 is coupled intended for the side of a door, which plate 4 is at one end 5 set at an angle to fit into a recess to be provided in a door frame .
- Figs . 4A, 4B and 4C show an application of a hinge which, apart from a hinge strap 1, is also provided with a hinge hook 10 (see top view of Fig. 4A) .
- This illustration shows the mounted situation using a plate 4 which is provided with a threaded pen 5 serving as projection and fitting into a recess in the door frame 11.
- the plate 4 is provided with an extra large slot or opening 12 (see Fig. 4C) so that, if the hinge is already mounted, it can fit over the angled part forming a ring 13 which is intended to be placed on the hinge hook 10, in order to be fastened to the side of a door 14 by making use of the screw holes 6.
- an auxiliary plate 7 is coupled with the hinge hook 10, which plate has a hole 8 for receiving the pen 5 of the plate 4 to augment the hinge's prevent- ative break-in function.
- FIG. 5A and 5B show yet another alternative embodiment of the hinge according to the invention in which a hinge strap 1 is used which at one end is provided with a portion set at an angle and forming a ring 13 to be placed on a hinge hook 10.
- a plate 4 is used whose one end 5 is set to form a right angle and a relatively narrow slot 12 just large enough to receive the hinge strap 1 (see Fig. 5C) .
- the case shown concerns an embodiment which must be attached to a door when the hinge is first mounted. In contrast with the embodiment shown in Figs. 4A to 4C, this embodiment is not suitable to be placed after the hinge has been mounted.
- Figs 6A and 6B show a variation on the embodiment shown in Figs.
- Figs. 6A and 6B is again provided with a threaded pen 5 which is inserted in an opening in the plate 4 which is also provided with thread, so that the length of the pen 5 can be adjusted simply by turning it, in order to adapt it to the depth of the recess in the frame 11.
- Fig. 7A and 7B show another hinge strap 1 intended to be placed on a hinge hook whose one end 13 is set at an angle and is ring-shaped.
- the hinge strap 1 shown is provided with a slot 16 to receive an end which is T-shaped in the same plane as the plate 4 and which is further provided with holes 6 for fastening the plate 4 to the side of a door on which the hinge strap 1 is mounted, and one end 5 of which plate 4 is also set at a right angle to fit into a recess in a door frame.
