Abstract

A scanning device (1) comprises a turntable (7), which is rotatable about an axis of rotation (7a), and a positioning device which is movable relative to the turntable in a plane which is oriented transversely to the axis of rotation of the turntable. The positioning device comprises a radiation source unit (9) and an actuator unit (23) with an objective system which is movable parallel to the axis of rotation of the turntable. The scanning device further comprises actuating means for moving the actuator unit and the radiation source unit relative to one another between discrete operating positions in at least the plane which is oriented transversely to the axis of rotation of the turntable so as to enable optical discs (3, 5) having mutually different substrate thicknesses and/or information densities to be scanned.
