SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR PRODUCING A LOCAL DEPENDENT IDENTITY FOR THE MOBILE STAΗON IN THE MOBILE NETWORK BY THE MEANS OF TELECOMMUNICATION ADAPTER
The present invention relates to a new type 5 of system and procedure for creating a location dependent identity for a mobile terminal in a mobile communication network by using a data adapter.
Generally, the invention relates to restricting the mobility of a mobile terminal in a mobile
10 communication network and especially to providing a local-subscriber type service associated with a given identity or storage module in a mobile communication network by using a data adapter.
In prior art, in almost all mobile communica-
15 tion networks serving card-controlled mobile stations, such as GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) networks, the user of a mobile station is identified by means of an identity or storage module, i.e. a SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card or equivalent inser-
20 ted into the mobile station.
It is known in prior art that a single identity module can be provided with two sets of data for identifying the user and defining his/her rights regarding the use of services. Reference is made to the
25 solution presented in specification SE467559, according to which the SIM card of a GSM telephone contains two IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identification) files IMSII and IMSI2, of which the user can activate either one by turning the card. According to
30 the specification, the SIM card is inserted into the card reader in a first position, i.e. with its first end foremost, thereby activating IMSI1 for use. Correspondingly, IMSI2 can be activated by inserting the SIM card into the card reader in a second position,
35 i.e. with its second end foremost. Alternatively, the mobile station is provided with a selector switch for
the selection of IMSI1 or IMSI2. Further, the desired identity is activated in conjunction with the input of a PIN (Personal Identity Number) code verifying the user's rights regarding the use of services. There is also a prior-art solution in which it is possible to use a second identity module besides an identity module already inserted into it or already present in it, in which case the identity module inserted into the second reader supersedes the identi- fying data of the previous identity module and the person identified as the user of the mobile station will be the person who inserted this second identity module. Reference is made to the solution presented in specification GB 2269512, in which a mobile station can be used with more than one storage modules, i.e. data cards, removably placed in it. In this case, the data processor of the mobile station uses the card readers in a predetermined order and the card readers receive a corresponding number of storage modules, i.e. SIM cards. Individual card readers can receive data cards of different physical sizes. The predetermined order can be automatically modified when a card reader is removed or installed. The user can also change the order at will e.g. via a menu option. Previously known is also a data adapter- mobile station assembly substantially permanent in location or only movable within a predetermined area, a definition of location being comprised in the IMSI information on the SIM card of the data adapter. Refe- rence is made to specification FI955242, according to which a mobile station with a separate SIM card for user identification is connected to a data adapter also containing a separate SIM card. In this solution, both SIM cards are provided with individual IMSI data. In this case, the mobile station contains a SIM2 card with IMSI2 data stored on it while the data adapter contains a SIM1 card with IMSI1 data stored on it.
When the mobile station is connected to the data adapter, the SIM card (SIM2) in the mobile station is deactivated and the SIM card (SIM1) in the card reader of the data adapter is activated and a data transmis- sion path is set up between the SIM cards in the mobile station and data adapter and IMSI codes assigned to the same subscriber are chained.
A problem with the above-described solution, in which a separate SIM card is needed both in the mo- bile station and in the data adapter, is that in principle any mobile station with a SIM card can be used with the data adapter because the mobile station-data adapter assembly is not associated with a given SIM card in any manner, i.e. the data adapter will accept any SIM card. This is naturally a safety risk because someone may connect his/her own mobile station to another person's data adapter and make calls at the latter ' s expense as the calls are registered against the IMSI of the SIM card in the data adapter. Another problem is that fitting a separate SIM card in the data adapter involves extra costs. A further problem is that the SIM card in the card reader of the data adapter can easily be stolen.
The object of the present invention is to solve the problems described above. A specific object of the present invention is to disclose a new type of system and procedure for creating a location dependent identity for a mobile terminal in a mobile communication network by using a data adapter, without provi- ding the data adapter with a separate identity or storage module, i.e. SIM card.
A further object of the invention is to prevent the possibility of a data adapter being used with any mobile station having a SIM card. In other words, in the system and procedure of the invention, the data adapter can only be used with one particular SIM card,
thus considerably reducing the risk of abuse of the data adapter.
These objects are achieved by the system and procedure of the invention. As for the features cha- racteristic of the system and procedure, reference is made to the claims presented below.
The starting point of the invention is that location dependent IMSI information is stored in the identity or storage module of a mobile terminal in a mobile communication network and that, to read said information, CHV (Card Holder Verification) information associated with the IMSI information and verifying the user's right to use the service as is known in the art, i.e. normally a PIN code, is needed. The basic idea of the invention is that the CHV information associated with the IMSI is generated using a mathematical algorithm on the basis of a first item of information read from the data adapter and a second item of information supplied by the user of the mobile termi- nal via the user interface.
In a preferred embodiment of the system of the present invention, the mobile terminal comprises, as is known in the art, first media for receiving information and the data adapter comprises second media for storing information. According to the invention, the system comprises a data bus for the transmission of information between said- first and second media as well as means for the processing of information.
In an embodiment of the procedure of the pre- sent invention, the mobile terminal, which has a selectively activated, location dependent IMSI1 file fitted on its identity or storage module to allow user identification based on CHV1 information, is connected to a data adapter substantially permanent in location or movable only within a predetermined area. According to the invention, a first item of CHVX information verifying the mobile terminal user's right to use the
service is fitted into the data adapter, the first item of CHVX information fitted in the data adapter is read into the mobile terminal via a data bus activated between the data adapter and the mobile terminal, a third item of CHV1 information is generated by the information processing means in the mobile terminal on the basis of the first item of CHVX information read from the data adapter and a second item of CHV2 information verifying the mobile terminal user's right to use the service and supplied by the mobile terminal user via a user interface, and, based on said third item of CHV1 information, the location dependent IMSI1 file in the identity or storage module of the mobile terminal is opened, whereupon the IMSI1 code in the VLR (Visitor Location Register) of the GSM network is updated.
As compared with prior art, the invention affords the advantage that, in the system of the invention, items of information received from two different sources can be processed to generate a third item of information and, further, to open a location dependent IMSI file in an identity or storage module. A further advantage of the present invention as compared with prior art is that a location dependent identity can be created for the user of a mobile terminal in a telecommunication network without having to provide the data adapter with a separate identity or storage module. In this way, the mobile terminal user can be offered a local-subscriber type service in the telecommu- nication network, associated with a certain SIM card and location, a service that is safer and can be provided more cost-effectively than before.
In the following, the invention will be described in detail by the aid of a preferred embodi- ment associated with the GSM system, by referring to the attached drawings.
Fig. 1 presents a mobile terminal in a telecommunication network, disconnected from the data adapter, in which case the terminal is normally used as a mobile telephone. Fig. 2 presents a mobile terminal in a telecommunication network, connected to a data adapter substantially permanent in location or only movable within a predetermined area, the use of the combination being restricted to a certain area. In Fig. 1, a mobile terminal 1 in a mobile communication network 9 is used as a normal mobile station. Beside the mobile terminal there is a data adapter 2, which comprises media 4 for the storage of information. The media 4 comprised in the data adapter are preferably intended for the storage of information associated with a certain identity or storage module and verifying the user's right to use the service.
In Fig. 1, the user supplies via the user interface of the mobile terminal an item of CHV2 infor- mation 7 verifying his/her right to use the service, whereupon, based on the CHV2 code, the IMSI2 file on the SIM card of the mobile terminal, associated with said code, is opened and, further, the IMSI2 code 11 in the VLR register device 10 of the mobile communica- tion network 9 is activated.
Fig. 2 illustrates a preferred embodiment of the system and procedure of the invention. A mobile terminal 1 in a mobile communication network 9 is connected to a data adapter 2. Fitted on media 4 com- prised in the data adapter is an item of CHVX information 4' verifying the user's right to use the service. According to the invention, after the user of the mobile terminal has connected the terminal to the data adapter, a data bus 5 between the data adapter and the terminal is automatically activated and the CHVX information is read via this data bus from the data
adapter into media 3 for receiving information, comprised in the mobile terminal.
Next, from the first item of information, i.e. the CHVX information 4' read from the data adap- ter 2, and from the second item of information, i.e. the CHV2 information 7 supplied by the mobile terminal user via the user interface, a third item of information, i.e. CHV1 information 8 is calculated using a mathematical algorithm by processing means 6 provided in the mobile terminal 1, and, based on this third item of information, the IMSI1 file associated with the CHV1 information in the identity or storage module of the mobile terminal in the mobile communication network is opened and the IMSI1 code 12 is activated in the VLR register device 10 of the mobile communication network 9.
The information processing means 6 referred to above comprise a mathematical algorithm F(CHVX,
CHV2) , which calculates the third item of information, i.e. the CHV1 information, from the equation CHV1 =
F(CHVX, CHV2) , where
CHV1 = third item of information 8 CHVX - first item of information 4 ' , fitted into the data adapter, and CHV2 = second item of information 7, supplied by the mobile terminal user via the user interface.
Further, it should- be pointed out here that, according to the basic idea of the invention, the assembly formed by the mobile terminal 1 and the data adapter 2 can only be used with a certain identity or storage module because the reading of the CHV1 information is dependent on certain other items of information CHVX and CHV2.
In addition, it is to be noted that the IMSI1 file opened in the identity or storage module on the basis of the CHV1 information contains data defining the location. In this way, it is possible to offer the
user of a mobile terminal 1 in a mobile communication network 9 a local -subscriber type service, which may involve different pricing and separate invoicing.
The invention has been described above by on- ly referring to a preferred embodiment related to the GSM network. This is not to be regarded as restricting the scope of protection of the invention, but it is obvious to a person skilled in the art that different variations are possible within the scope of protection defined by the claims.
