Description
"System, portable device, charging device and information device"
The present invention concerns a system comprising a portable device and a charging device for electrically charging the portable device or an information device.
The present invention also concerns a portable device, and a charging device or an information device, for use in such a system.
Such a system is generally known in the art of portable devices, such as telecommunication devices, e.g. telephones, voice systems, responder systems and the like. A telephone system of a common kind comprises a portable telephone having a rechargeable battery means acting as a power supply for the portable telephone, and a charging device for charging the rechargeable battery means. The charging usually takes place by establishing an appropriate electrical connection between the telephone and the charging device on a regular basis. Generally portable devices, such as the telephone need information, such as dialling information to work with while the devices are being carried by a user. A keypad having keys there on provide dialling data to by used in the portable device and in a private or public network, where the device forms part of. Nowadays there is a tendency to make portable devices, such as telephones as small and light-weight as possible so that the user of the portable phone is bothered thereby as less as possible. This leads to a well known reduction of the size and number of the necessary keys, and of the space between these keys. There is however a limit to the maximum feasible degree of reduction of the keys in prior art portable devices, which is imposed by the requirement that the necessary keys have to be reachable, operable and usable.
The present invention aims at breaking through the limit in order to further reduce the number of necessary keys on a portable device.
Thereto the system according to the present invention is characterised in that the charging device is provided with keys, and that the charging device and the portable device are provided with transfer means for transferring at least keyed information to the
portable device. It is an advantage of the system according to the present invention that the number and the space occupied earlier by the keys on the portable device are now dispensed with to enable the portable device to be miniaturised further. Nevertheless this does not have great negative effects on the functional features of the portable device itself. In particular dialling data keyed in on the charging device can now easily be transferred by means of the transfer means from the charging device to the portable device. Such transfer could take place by means of any suitable transfer means either through a wired connection, which is already present in practise between the charging device and the portable device, and/or through a wireless communication connection there between. At wish simultaneous with the transfer of data the charging of the batteries or cells therein could take place. If the user too far away from the charging device for transferring information, new numbers can still be dialled, by scrolling to a pre-stored number list using only two scrolling keys, for instance. Accordingly a further system, the portable device, the charging device, and the information storage device by virtue of the present invention have features outlined in claims 13, 17, 18 and 19 respectively.
One embodiment of the system according to the invention is characterised in that the charging device is provided with a storage means coupled to the keys for storing the keyed information. The advantage thereof is that the keying of information on the charging device can take place independent of the fact whether or not the portable device is connected to the charging device.
In a further embodiment the system according to the invention is characterised in that the transfer means comprises connector means having charging current resistant contacts.
Advantageously the connector means comprises information transfer contacts as well as charging current resistant contacts integrated therein.
At present the system and charging device according to the invention will be elucidated further, referring to the accompanying drawing, showing an example of a possible embodiment thereof.
The figure shows a system 1, comprising a portable device, such as a portable communication device in the form of a schematically depicted portable telephone 2, a pocket phone, facsimile, personal computer, responder or the like, and a device 3, which could for example be a charging device or an information device, which will be elucidated
later on. The telephone 2 is provided with a rechargeable cell or rechargeable battery 4 to be electrically charged by the device 3, in case the device 3 is embodied as a charging device. The battery 4 can also be a battery of a non-chargeable type, or can be a solar panel, or the like. The system comprises transfer means 5. The charging device 3 comprises the transfer means 5-1, whereas the portable telephone 2 comprises transfer means 5-2. The transfer means 5-1, 5-2 cooperate with one another through a communication link 6, which is either provided with wires or is wireless. The transfer means 5 are provided with mutually cooperating connector means 7-1, 7-2 having charging current resistant contacts 8-1, 8-2 respectively for conveying the charging current through a wire connection 9 from the charging device 3 to the telephone 2. The charging device 3 is provided with a keypad having keys 10 for generating data or information by means of an interface/keypad decoder (not shown), which information is transferred by means of the transfer means 5 from the charging device 3 to the telephone 2. The telephone 2 shown has a microprocessor 11 and a memory 12 connected thereto for storing the information or a part of that information keyed by the keys in the charging device 3. Also the charging device 3 has a microprocessor 13 and a memory 14 connected thereto for storing the information keyed by the keys 10. In addition there is provided in a separately illustrated memory 15 for storing a microcomputer program in order to orderly guide the transfer of keyed information to the telephone 2 in a menu driven way. It will be clear to the man skilled in the relevant art that there exist a variety of possible software implementations to provide such a menu. The figure shows, in separate at wish software implementable blocks, selection means 16 and 17 in the charging device 3 and the telephone 2 respectively. The selection means 16 and 17 are coupled to the transfer means 5-1, 5-2 respectively for transferring keyed information, such as for example telephone or address information, which keyed information is selectable from the memories 12, 14 to and/or from the charging device 3 and the telephone 2 through the communication link 6. Appropriate programming means there to in the form of further software can alternatively be stored in the memory 12 of the portable device 2.
Each of the charging device 3 and the portable device 2 can comprise display means 18 and 19 respectively. Such display means 19 could for example be used to show characters which are selectable one after the other by selection means in the known form of arrow keys, whereby each character thus selected can be stored in the memory 12 for later use without the charging device 3 being necessary thereto.
In a further advanced embodiment the telephone 2 is provided with auditive means 20. Appropriate programming of the microprocessor 11 is necessary to
operate the auditive means 20 such that the telephone 2 recognises certain commands, characters or phrases in order to be able to act according to instructions and commands, and/or to store characters and/or ciphers in the memory 12 for later use for example as telephone book data, address data etcetera. Alternative ways of inputting data provide for the possibility of programming one or more keys on the charging device 3 or possibly on the telephone 2 such that such key or keys can perform various different functions simultaneously. In one alternative the keys are provided on a dedicated keyboard. Appropriate software is available for the man skilled in the art of programming. In a way known per se the telephone 2 is connected together with further telephones not shown to a network 21. Although the device 3 could be a charger, such as a fast charger, it is also possible within the present disclosure to embody the device 3 as an information device not having charging capabilities, but having keys 10 and possibly, but not necessarily with an information storage or memory 14. Apart from some aforementioned scrolling keys the portable device 2 then contains a minimum amount of keys 10. In general the portable device 2 has a minimum amount of keys, whereas most of the keys will now be mounted on the charging or information device 3 instead of being mounted on the device 2. In view of the foregoing it will be evident to a person skilled in the art that various modifications may be made within the spirit and the scope of the present invention as hereinafter defined by the appended claims and that the present invention is thus not limited to the examples provided.
