Abstract
A starter (10) for a gas discharge lamp operated by direct current can be series connected to incandescent electrodes located therein. The starter (10) comprises a switching device (24) which, when in closed position conductively connects incandescent electrodes, thereby enabling a heating phase. When in open position said device enables induction of a voltage pulse, resulting in ignition of gas discharge lamp. Switching device (24) is formed by a semiconductor switching element.
