Definitions
- This invention relates to trailers for vehicles. More especially but not exclusively the invention relates to wheeled trailers which include a load supporting platform moveable between ground engaging and elevated positions.
- Co-pending application GB9526607.8 discloses a trailer which includes a load supporting platform which is releasably connected at one end to a frame and is mounted at or towards its other end for pivotable movement relative to the frame about a fulcrum defined by a cross-member positioned to the rear of the frame.
- the wheels of the trailer are positioned between the releasable connection and the fulcrum, and the arrangement is such that when the platform is connected to the frame it is supported above ground level by the frame and that when the platform is released from its connection to the frame it can be lowered to a ground engaging position to pivotable movement of the platform relative to the frame about the fulcrum.
- trailers are in practice employed to transport items which require different load bearing platforms.
- the platform comprises one or more spaced channel-sectioned beams each designed to receive the front and rear tyres of a motorcycle.
- a flat bed platform is normally required. It is an object of the present invention to provide a trailer of the type described in which the load bearing platform can readily and symmetrically be changed.
- a trailer having a load supporting platform releasably connected to a frame within which the platform locates, the connection between the frame and the platform being effected by ball couplings mounted on the frame and/or platform and hitch balls mounted on the platform and/or frame respectively, and means for releasably locking the hitch balls within the couplings.
- one or a pair of ball couplings is/are carried by a tow bar of the trailer and cooperate with complementary hitch ball(s) which protrude upwardly or outwardly from the front of the frame.
- the rear of the frame may carry upstanding hitch balls which cooperate with complementary ball couplings carried by the platform.
- the invention provides a trailer whose tow bar is supported by a nose wheel connected to one end of a shaft slidable within a sleeve to vary the position of the tow bar above ground level, the shaft supporting on its upper end a pulley over which passes a cable of a winch, the winch operating through the cable and the pulley to drive the shaft though the sleeve to raise the tow bar relative to the ground.
- the invention provides a trailer having a tow bar including an inclined brace along which can track a slide to which a towing hitch of the trailer is attached, the brace and slide being formed with complementary holes which cooperate to enable the height of the towing hitch above ground level to be varied.
- FIG. 1 is a side view of a trailer in accordance with the invention with its tow bar in two different positions and with its load bearing platform also shown in two different positions.
- Figure 2 is a view taken in the direction of arrow II of Figure 1 ;
- Figure 3 is a plan view from above of a detail of the trailer illustrated in Figure 1 ;
- Figure 4 is a side view taken in the direction of arrow IV of Figure 3;
- Figure 5 is a rear view of the illustrated trailer taken in the direction of arrow V of Figure 4.
- Figure 6 is a side view of a detail of an alternative trailer in accordance with the invention.
- the trailer illustrated in Figures 1 to 5 comprises a load bearing platform 1 supported within a frame 2 which is in turn supported by a pair of wheels 3 mounted on stub axles 4.
- the frame has at its front end a tow bar 5 which includes a releasable hitch mechanism (not shown) for connection to a vehicle.
- the frame 2 has an open structure and is produced from, for example, steel tubing.
- the frame comprises a pair of generally parallel side members to which the stub axles 4 are secured, which, at their forward ends, are turned inwardly to define a yoke which is secured to the tow bar 5 by welding.
- a tube 6 in which is located a metal rod 7 whose ends protrude from the tube 6 to define spindles which receive tubular end pieces 8 of downwardly extending arms 9.
- Each arm 9 carries a ball coupling 10.
- the couplings 10 are secured to the arms 9 by bolts 1 1 and cooperating nuts 1 2. Other known means of securing the ball couplings to the arms could be employed.
- the rod 7 is free to rotate within the tube 6 and the tubular end pieces 8 are free to rotate about the rod 7.
- a release handle 14 is provided to operate and release the couplings 10.
- the load bearing platform 1 carries at its forward end a pair of steel hitch balls 1 5 spaced apart by a distance equal to the spacing between the ball couplings 1 0.
- the tow bar 5 is shown in its raised position with the ball couplings 10 released from the hitch balls 1 5.
- position B the tow bar 5 is shown in its louvred position with the hitch balls 1 5 locked within the ball couplings 1 0.
- the rear end of the load bearing platform 1 includes outwardly and forwardly inclined arms 1 6 which carry ball couplings 1 7.
- the rear end of the frame 2 has outwardly extending arms 1 8 which carry upstanding hitch balls 1 9.
- the spacing of the hitch balls 1 9 match the spacing of the couplings 1 7; release handles 21 are provided to lock the hitch balls within the couplings when required.
- the platform has a deck 20.
- load bearing platform 1 can readily be removed from the frame 2 simply by operating the handles 14, 21 to release the hitch balls 15, 1 9 from the couplings 10, 1 7. Replacement of one load bearing platform with another of different design can therefore be readily achieved.
- the deck 20 of the platform 1 lies below the level of the arms 1 6 and the couplings 17 and hitch balls 1 9 one in line with and to the rear of the vertical axes of the wheels 3.
- the load bearing platform can be moved between a first position shown in full line (position A) in which it is above ground level and a second position shown in broken line (position C) in which it lies flat along the ground. Movement of the load bearing platform between these two positions will now be described.
- the trailer is unhitched from the towing vehicle and the forward trailer end lowered to bring the forward end of the load platform into contact with the ground.
- the forward hitch couplings 1 0 are then released from the two hitch balls 1 5 by operating the release handle 14.
- the tow bar and frame are raised by lifting the tow bar 5 to lower the rear end of the platform onto the ground in a controlled movement under the action of the gas springs. Lifting of the tow bar causes the hitch balls 1 9 to pivot about the rear ball couplings to enable the rear end of the platform 1 to be lowered onto the ground.
- the platform 1 can then be released from the frame 2 by removing the ball couplings 1 0, 1 7 from the hitch balls 1 5, 1 9 by operating the handles 1 4, 21 and releasing the gas springs 22 from the platform.
- the tow bar is lowered thereby causing the platform to be raised through pivotable movement of the couplings about the hitch balls 19.
- FIG 6 illustrates an adjustable towing hitch 25 and nose wheel 26 for use with the trailer illustrated in Figures 1 to 5.
- the towing hitch 25 includes a tubular brace 27 which supports a track 28 formed with a series of spaced holes 29 along which a slider 30 can be moved.
- the slider 30 carries a coupling tongue 31 in which is mounted a ball coupling 32.
- the slider 30 is formed with a pair of holes 33 which complement those of the track 28 to enable the coupling tongue to be positioned selectively at any one of four heights above ground level. Of course, if more holes are provided in the track, more alternative heights are possible.
- the nose wheel 26 supports the front end of the trailer frame and is carried by a shaft 34 which passes upwardly through a guide sleeve 35.
- a locking clamp 36 is provided to lock the shaft 34, and therefore the nose wheel 26, in any selected position.
- the upper end of the shaft 34 carries a pulley over which a cable 37 of a winch 38 travels.
- the end of the cable 37 remote from the winch 38 has a hook 39 which passes through a cleat 40 welded to the tow bar 41 of the trailer. Operation of the winch following release of the locking clamp drives the shaft 34 through the sleeve 35 thereby lifting the front end of the trailer.
