Abstract

A disposable support for ice-cream cones formed of a generally conical envelope (1) which is provided with a wide upper spreading (2) so as to have room for a cornet (10) in almost all of its extension from the point to the upper edge and to receive the drops of melted ice cream in said spreading. The support is also provided with a supporting pedestal for carrying the ice-cream cone on a tray. In order that the cornet may be easily and quickly taken away from the magazine, a second embodiment particularly adapted for cornets with outer corrugated surfaces provides a support having a completely smooth inner conical surface with the same tapering angle as that of the cornet to be received.

Description

ANTI-DRIPPING SUPPORT FOR ICE-CREAM CONES AND PEDESTAL FOR CARRYING THE SAME
The present invention relates to a disposable anti- dripping support for an ice-cream cone.
Such a support is used whenever a direct contact between 5 hand and cornet of the ice-cream cone should be avoided above all for hygienic regulations. More particularly, the supports for such cones are used in the ice-cream shops by the ice-cream men who take the cornets away from suitable vertical magazines and fill them with the ice cream. For
10 hygienic regulations such a manual operation of taking the cornets away from the magazines should be carried out by interposing a protection which prevents the hand from directly touching the cornet. To this purpose the ice-cream men make generally use of 5 paper napkins or other suitable supports, still of paper, which cover the lower part of the cornet at the contact point with the hand. Such supports have, however, small size, cover only the lower part of the cornet, and are thrown away by the same ice-cream man after service. 0 Accordingly, ice-cream consumers hold directly the cornet without further protection so that, as well known, besides having no hygienic protection it happens frequently that the melted ice-cream drips along the cornet and makes the hands dirty, especially those of children. 5 The main purpose of the present invention is of providing a simple disposable support for ice-cream cones which is capable of assuring the necessary hygiene both for icecream vendors and buyers and at the same time preventing the hands from becoming dirty due to the drops of melted ice-cream dripping along the cornet.
This purpose is achieved according to the invention by a disposable support for ice-cream cones having conical shape and a wide upper spreading so as to have room for the cornet in almost all of its extension from the point to the upper edge and to receive the drops of melted ice cream and to prevent the same from contacting the hand of the consumer .
A first advantage of the invention is of assuring a greater hygiene than the known supports of ice-cream cones and the napkins generally used for this purpose. A second advantage is of avoiding that ice-cream consumers can make their hands dirty with the melted ice-cream drops dripping along the cornet.
A third advantage is that it is capable to be used as support for advertising messages, for example, those of the ice-cream vendor or the ice-cream or cornet manufacturer.
These and other advantages will be more readily understood by anyone skilled in the art from the following description with reference to the accompanying drawings which show by way of example two preferred embodiments of the invention. In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is an elevation view of the support for ice-cream cones according to a first embodiment of the invention; Fig. 2 is a view according to line X-X of the support of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 shows a detail of the cone of Figs. 1 and 2;
Fig. 4 shows a support inserted into a pedestal according to the invention for carrying the same on a tray;
Figs. 5 and 6 show schematically two variations of a second embodiment.
With reference to Figs. 1 to 4 a support for ice-cream cones according to a first embodiment of the invention includes an envelope 1 of frustum-conical shape with tapering angle α and having a wide spreading 2 directed upwards and ending in an upper edge 3. Spreading 2 is formed of two circular concentric rings 4 and 5 extending upwards with increasing diameter. The lower ring 4 has a curvilinear outline, the upper ring 5 has a generally rectangular outline ending in said upper edge 3.
As can be seen from Fig. 2, edge 3 is curled inwards so that the sharp lip 6 does not endanger the consumers who are not hurt by the contact with hands or mouth. Stiffening ribs 7 extend from ring 4 at the beginning of spreading 2 downwards along the conical portion of envelope 1 until almost the bottom of the lower part 8 of the same envelope.
A peculiar characteristic of the first described embodiment is that the tapering angle α is slightly larger than that of the cornet 10 to be inserted into the envelope so that the point of the cornet does not touch the bottom of envelope 1. Thus, ribs 7, besides stiffening the envelope, form a passage for the melted ice cream which is not accumulated on top of the cornet but drips downwards and deposits in the lower section 8. According to a further characteristics of this embodiment shown in Fig. 3, envelope 1 has transversal knurling 11 located in the contact area with the purpose of holding the cornet by friction. According to the invention, in Fig. 4 there is shown a pedestal 12 within which a pocket 13 is formed with a surface which is coaxial to envelope 1 and fits the outer shape thereof by holding the same in the vertical position. Thus, the ice-cream cone/pedestal assembly 12 is stable and can be carried on a tray. In Fig. 4, the base 14 of the pedestal has the same extension as spreading 2 so that the vertical projection of the centre of gravity of the ice-cream cone falls in the bearing plane of the pedestal. A further advantageous characteristic of the invention is that both envelope 1 and pedestal 12 are of the same plastic material as used for the common disposable plates, and then the weight and the manufacturing cost are very low, especially as far as the embodiment of Fig. 4 is concerned in which the outer lower form of pedestal 12 looks like the upper part of envelope 1 so that both parts may be made by the same die.
A second embodiment of the invention, schematically shown in Figs. 5 and 6, provides a cornet support 1A, the inner conical surface of which contacting the cornet is completely smooth and does not have any knurling and/or rib 7.
It should be appreciated that, in case of a cornet provided with a corrugated or knurled outer conical surface, a support 1 provided with ribs 7 and knurling 11 is not capable to provide a sufficient friction for taking the cornet away from the vertical magazine by pulling it with the support holding hand. The smooth support 1A of the second embodiment provides the sufficient friction for taking the cornet away from the above-mentioned magazine and exhibits the peculiar characteristic of having the same tapering angle β as the cornet so that the two contacting conical surfaces fit completely each other and not only along the periphery thereof. Finally, the support of the present invention may have a variety of sizes so as to fit the different sizes of the cornets to be taken away.
The present invention is described with reference to two preferred embodiments thereof, however, it should be appreciated that a number of equivalent modifications may be made by anyone skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the described inventive concept and then remaining within the limits of the present invention.
