Abstract

The lawn edging (10) is formed by extruding a thermoplastic resin, preferably a thermoplastic resin such as polyethylene containing a dispersion of prevulcanized elastomer granules through a die (62) having a vertical die orifice (64) for forming the wall (12) of the channel (16). The vertical die orifice (64) also contains an element for forming protrusions (20) on a surface of the wall (12). The element preferably forms a horizontal edge on the protrusion (20). The feed rate of the element can be higher than the adjacent sections of the wall (12) such that the extruded material backs up in the die (62) and intermittently feeds through the outlet orifice (64). The channel (16) can contain a lower bead (34) and an upper hollow head member (14) which can be coated with a liquid impervious film (100) and perforated by a laser (120) to form spray apertures (122).

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS
[received by the International Bureau on 2 September 1998 (02.09.98); original claims 1-25 replaced by amended claims 1-24 (5 pages)]
1. A lawn edging comprising: an elongated flange having an upper planar section for extending above the ground and a lower section to be disposed within the ground, said flange having a top edge, a lower edge, a first face, a second face and an elongated axis; said lower section including axial anchor means disposed between said edges, connected to at least one surface of the lower section for anchoring the flange in the ground comprising a continuous, wave-like, ribbon having a plurality of interconnected convex segments extending upwardly and outwardly from said first face.
2. A lawn edging according to claim 1 in which the ribbon includes an upper ledge surface perpendicular to the axis of the flange and each of the convex segments having a first axial end, a second axial end and a central, outwardly curved protrusion section, each said second end being joined to a first end of an adjacent convex segment.
3. A lawn edging according to claim 2 in which said ribbon has a triangular cross-section and said first and second faces of the flange having a rough texture.
4. A lawn edging according to claim 3 in which said flange is formed of a composite containing 20-80 percent by weight of prevulcanized elastomer granules dispersed in a 17
thermoplastic binder resin.
5. A lawn edging according to claim 4 in which the elastomer granules are present in an amount from 40 to 70% by weight .
6. A lawn edging according to claim 5 in which the elastomer particles are recovered from rubber tires and the resin is polyethylene.
7. A lawn edging according to claim 1 in which the lawn edging further contains a continuous head member connected to said top edge.
8. A lawn edging according to claim 7 in which the head member is hollow.
9. A lawn edging according to claim 8 in which the head member is porous to liquid and contains a liquid impervious coating of resin.
10. A lawn edging according to claim 9 in which the coating contains dyes and/or pigments to color the head member a different color than the rest of the lawn edging.
11. A lawn edging according to claim 9 in which the head member contains a plurality of perforations through said coating and adjacent wall of the head member into the hollow interior of the head member.
12. A lawn edging according to claim 7 further including a continuous bead attached to the lower edge of the channel .
13. A lawn edging according to claim 2 further including a plurality of dome- like protrusions extending from said 18
second face, each being disposed at the point where the ends of wave-like projections meet.
14. A lawn edging formed of a flexible, synthetic resin channel ; said channel having a top edge and a bottom edge, an upper section and a lower section, a first face and a second face ; and anchor means attached to the first face of the channel between said edges and within said lower section comprising a continuous, wave-like ribbon having a plurality of interconnected, convex members extending upwardly and outwardly from said first face, each of said convex members having an upper ledge, a first end and a second end and a central convex arcuate section, said second end being joined to an end of an adjacent member.
15. A flange according to claim 14 in which the flange consists essentially of a composite containing 20-80 percent by weight of prevulcanized elastomer granules dispersed in a thermoplastic binder resin.
16. A lawn edging according to claim 15 in which the ledge is perpendicular to said first face.
17. A flange according to claim 16 in which the ribbon has a triangular cross-section.
18. A method of forming a lawn edging comprising the steps of : extruding a dispersion of 20-80 percent by weight of 19
prevulcanized rubber granules dispersed in thermoplastic resin through an extrusion die to form a flange having a wall with a top edge, bottom edge, an upper section, a lower section, a first face and a second face; disposing within the die an element to form a continuous, axial, ribbon containing wave-like convex sections on one face of the wall and a plurality of discrete rounded protrusions extending from the second face of the wall within the lower section; and extruding said resin through said die past said element to form said ribbon.
19. A method according to claim 18 in which the feed rate of resin to the die element is greater than the resin feed rate to other portions of the wall.
20. A method according to claim 18 in which the forming element contains a surface perpendicular to the wall of the channel whereby said ribbon contains a ledge perpendicular to said wall which is formed on extrusion.
21. A method according to claim 18 further including the steps of forming a head member comprising a liquid permeable, hollow pipe extrusion connected to said top edge; and coating said liquid impermeable head member with a continuous layer of water impervious film.
22. A method according to claim 18 in which the surfaces on said wall have a rough texture.
23. A method according to claim 22 comprising the step 20
of perforating said head member.
24. A method according to claim 21 further including the step of injecting gas into the interior of said head member while it is in the extrusion die.
