Definitions
- the present invention relates to an easy loading stretcher.
- the present invention provides a stretcher adapted for easy loading into a vehicle, the stretcher comprising an undercarriage with four wheels depending from the undercarriage each wheel being pivotable on a vertical axis, a stretcher top, a collapsible brace assembly between the stretcher top and the undercarriage, and a front buffer carrying a pair of loading wheels with the axis of the loading wheels being at a level lower than the lowermost member of the stretcher top and the buffer being pivotally connected to the stretcher top, whereby when the stretcher is in its elevated position, the loading wheels on the front buffer can come in contact with the floor of the vehicle to take the weight of the stretcher prior to its being collapsed to finish the loading operation and whereby when the stretcher is in its elevated transport position, the buffer may be pivoted downwardly thereby decreasing the length of the stretcher.
- the undercarriage can be lowered to ground level, prior to the loading wheels being removed from the vehicle .
- the four wheels are fixed to the undercarriage by four depending spigots which raise the undercarriage high enough for it to clear a normal wheel arch of an ambulance .
- the stretcher includes an outer tubular frame and the buffer is provided at the head end of the frame with a pivotal back rest and a pivotal leg rest being provided on the stretcher top with each rest being lockable in a pivoted position.
- the buffer is connected to the frame by a pair of articulated joints which are releasable by moving a pair of movable sleeves whereby the buffer may be pivoted downwardly for manoeuving the stretcher in confined spaces .
- the stretcher when in the collapsed mode is at a good working height for an attendant and is moveable on the four wheels and the two loading wheels either in an ambulance or outside.
- the stretcher in which the collapsible brace assembly includes a first pair of cross brace members cooperating with a second pair of cross brace members with a fixed sleeve being provided on each cross brace member and a sliding sleeve being provided on each cross brace member, a pivot pin connecting each sliding sleeve and each fixed sleeve, springs located on the second pair of cross brace members between the sliding sleeve and the stretcher top, the springs being compressible as the cross brace members drop when released by a release mechanism, so as to dampen the shock of the wheels hitting the ground when the stretcher is being removed from a vehicle such as an ambulance .
- the release mechanism comprises a notched bar engageable against a stop, operable by one or more release handles, each of which is associated with a spring loaded catch, whereby the release mechanism cannot be operated unintentionally to collapse the brace assembly.
- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the stretcher m its elevated position
- Figure 2 is a side view of the stretcher in its collapsed position
- Figure 3 is an enlarged perspective view of a detail of the release mechanism of the stretcher.
- the stretcher of the invention includes an undercarriage 10, a stretcher top 20, a collapsible brace assembly 30 between the undercarriage 10 and the stretcher top 20 for elevating and lowering the stretcher top 20 relative to the undercarriage 10.
- the stretcher top 20 includes an outer tubular frame 22. At the head end of the frame 22 is provided a buffer 50. At a lower level of the buffer 50 is a pair of loading wheels 52 which take a large portion of the weight of the stretcher when loading and unloading. A pivotal back rest 23 and a pivotal leg rest 24 are provided on the stretcher top 20. Each rest can be locked in a pivoted position.
- the Duffer 50 is connected to the frame 22 by two articulated oints 45 which can be released by moving two sleeves 46 to enable the buffer to be pivoted downwardly for manoeuvring the stretcher in confined spaces.
- the stretcher When the stretcher is collapsed, it is at a good working height for an attendant and can still be moved on the four wheels 12 and the two loading wheels 52 either in an ambulance or outside.
- the collapsible brace assembly 30 includes a pair of cross brace members 31 and a pair of cross brace members 32.
- a fixed sleeve 33 is provided on each cross brace member 31 and a sliding sleeve 34 is provided on the cross brace member 32.
- a pivot pin 35 connects each sliding sleeve 34 and each fixed sleeve 33.
- a spring 36 is provided on each cross brace member 32. The springs 36 compress as the cross brace members 31 , 32 drop when released by the release mechanism 40 to dampen the shock of the wheels 12 hitting the ground when the stretcher is being removed from the ambulance .
- Part of the release mechanism 40 is shown in Figure 4 and includes a handle 41, notched bar 42 and safety catch 43. More than one release handle 41 may be provided.
- the safety catch 43 is spring loaded to engage in a locked position and is shown in the disengaged position in Figure 3.
