Abstract

An apparatus includes at least one optical fiber (2) device including a region, and a ferrule (12) having an aperture (16) therethrough filled with a metal alloy securing material therein. The metal alloy securing material is softened responsive to application of energy thereto, and the region of the optical fiber (2) device is inserted therethrough for securing to the aperture (16) of the ferrule (12).

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS

17. A method, comprising the steps of:
(a) disposing a securing material having a first coefficient of expansion in an aperture of a ferrule having a second coefficient of expansion less than the first coefficient of expansion;
(b) softening the securing material responsive to application of energy to the securing material and/or the ferrule; and
(c) inserting a region of at least one optical fiber device having a third coefficient of expansion substantially similar to the second coefficient of expansion through the securing material for securing to the aperture of the ferrule.
18. A method, comprising the steps of:
(a) disposing a securing material having a first coefficient of expansion on a substrate having a second coefficient of expansion less than the firεt coefficient of expansion; (b) softening the securing material responsive to application of energy to the securing material and/or the substrate; and
(c) inserting a region of at least one optical fiber device having a third coefficient of expansion substantially similar to the second coefficient of expansion on the securing material for securing to the substrate.
19. An apparatus, comprising: at least one optical fiber, device and fiber optic device, including a region and having a first thermal coefficient of expansion; an external element having an area provided with a securing material thereon, the securing material having a second thermal coefficient of expansion greater than the first thermal coefficient of expansion, and the external element having a third thermal coefficient of expansion substantially similar to the first thermal coefficient of expansion, and the region being secured to said external element via the securing material.
20. An apparatus, comprising: at least one optical fiber, device and fiber optic device, including a region and having a first thermal coefficient of expansion; an external element having an aperture therethrough filled with a securing material therein, the securing material having a second thermal coefficient of expansion greater than the first thermal coefficient of expansion, and the external element having a third thermal coefficient of expansion substantially similar to the first thermal coefficient of expansion, and the region being secured to said external element via the securing material .
