Description

ADAPTABLE RACK SYSTEM FOR MEDIA STORAGE
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
1- Field of the Invention: This invention relates to the field of rack systems for storing data storage media, such as tape cartridges and optical disks, and particularly to the field of adaptable racks for storing various types of media.
2. Statement of the Problem; Media storage racks are widely used for storing data storage media, particularly in large information systems. The use of these racks date back to the storage of computer reels in older main frame computer systems. Examples of these types of racks are disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 3,654,878, U.S. Patent No. 4,573,589, and U.S. Patent No. 4,579,231. The use of storage racks for data storage media extends to the present rack systems for storing tape cartridges such as 3480/3490-style tape cartridges. These types of storage rack systems for 3480/3490-style tape cartridges are typified by the disclosures of U.S. Patent No. 4,600,207, U.S. Patent No. 4,688,682, U.S. Patent No. 4,782,958, U.S. Patent Des. 300,287, U.S. Patent No. Des. 300,288, and U.S. Patent No. 5,072,838. Additional styles of data storage media gaining acceptance include eight millimeter (8mm) tape cartridges, four millimeter (4mm) tape cartridges, five one-quarter (5 1/4) inch optical disks, and three one- half (3 1/2) inch optical disks. Other data storage media will likely be developed as advances in technology occur.
The present rack systems are not designed to accommodate these additional styles of data storage media. Therefore, new styles of storage systems are being specifically designed to meet the requirements of these styles of data storage media.
An additional problem arises in that a number of data storage media systems use proprietary tape cartridge holders that may not be compatible for use in existing storage rack systems. Thus, even if the data storage media is already being stored in an existing rack system, the existing rack system may not be able to store another style of tape cartridge holders. The rack systems for storing data storage media are relatively expensive. Presently, a major investment is necessary for storing a particular style of media. Thus, a new line of storage rack systems must be purchased and installed for every change in data storage media or change in the media holders. This can be a major expense, particularly when the change in data media storage is in a transitional phase. Several styles of data storage media may be in use at a particular site. Presently, using existing rack systems, a plurality of differing storage rack systems are required to accommodate the various styles of data storage media. Also, the older storage rack systems become outdated and useless as the particular data storage media stored therein is phased out. An additional problem occurs from configuring existing space requirements for the storage rack systems. Typically, an entirely new design is used for each change in data storage media. For instance, the size requirements change, such as depth and width, for each change in style of data storage media. The different storage rack systems are not always compatible with existing space requirements.
Presently, a problem exists in that there is no existing rack system that can be easily configured and/or adapted to hold most popular styles of data storage media.
3. Solution to the Problem: The present invention solves this problem by providing a series of adaptors for converting an existing rack system for various styles of data storage media. For instance, an existing rack system, the Extreme Rack System, manufactured by Engineered Data Products, Inc., Broomfield, Colorado, is marketed for storing 3480/3490 style tape cartridge holders. The adaptors of the present invention engage this rack system without requiring extensive modification of the racks to allow storage of other styles of data storage media. These other styles of data storage media include but are not limited to 8mm tape cartridges, 4mm tape cartridges, 5 1/4 inch optical disks and 3 1/2 inch optical disks.
The present invention enables a variety of styles of data storage media to stored on a single rack system. Thus, the expense of installing and maintaining a plurality of differing rack systems for each style of data storage media used is eliminated. Also, the space requirements are reduced. A single rack system can be used to store a number of different styles of data storage media.
This concept can also be applied to transport trucks, carousels, and other data storage media handling systems. SϋMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention provides an adaptable rack system for storage of a variety of differing styles of data storage media holders. In one preferred embodiment, the rack system of the present invention includes a rack having support members with horizontally and vertically aligned slots. Data storage tape cartridges, such as 3480/3490-style tape cartridges, are stored in a tape cartridge holder for ease in transporting and storage. These tape cartridge holders engage the slots of the rack support members for support thereon.
This adaptable rack system provides adaptors that will engage in the support member slots. These adaptors include engagement members for engaging differing styles of data storage media holders. For instance, one adaptor includes a plate member with rear suspension members. These rear suspension members are engageable in the support member slots for support thereon. The plate member also includes engaging members for engaging an alternative data storage media holder. In one embodiment, the plate member has an upwardly angled engaging member that engages a downwardly angled slot on a tape cartridge holder. An abutment member below the engaging member maintains the tape cartridge holder in vertical alignment.
In a second embodiment, the adaptor includes a boxlike member with rear suspension members engageable in the support member slots. Slots are aligned in the front face of the member. Smaller tape cartridge holders, such as for holding 8mm and 4mm cartridges, include rear suspension members which engage the adaptor slots.
A third embodiment of adaptors include an adaptor member with rear suspension members engageable on the support member slots. This adaptor member includes storage capacity for securely holding optical disks, such as five one-quarter (5 1/4) inch and three one-half (3 1/2) inch optical disks.
The preferred embodiment of the present invention provides a rack system that can be easily adapted to securely store various styles of data storage media holders. A single rack can be adapted to hold a multitude of differing data storage media on the same rack. These and other features of the present invention are evident from the ensuing detailed description of a preferred embodiment and from the drawings.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
The present invention provides an adaptable rack system that not only can accommodate most accepted styles data storage media but can be adapted to fit new styles of data storage media as they become available. This adaptable rack system includes a system of adaptors that will adapt rack systems already available in the market. Thus, an operator can simply install the appropriate adaptors on a previously installed rack system to accommodate additional styles of data storage media. Additionally, a single rack system can be adapted to store a variety of data storage media on a single rack.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention is fully described herein. It is to be expressly understood that this descriptive embodiment is intended for explanatory purposes only. The scope of the inventive concept is not to be limited by this exemplary embodiment. Additional variations and embodiments are considered to be within the range of the inventive concept .
The rack of the rack system of the preferred embodiment is illustrated in Figures 1 - 3. Rack 10 is described in U.S. Patent application assigned to the assignee of the present invention and incorporated herein by reference. Rack 10 includes side panels 12, 14, upper panel 16 and bottom panel 18. Support members 20 are affixed between upper panel 16 and bottom panel 18. Support members 20 are vertically aligned parallel to and spaced horizontally from one another. In other embodiments of the present invention, a single support member 20 extends the entire space between the side panels, upper panel and bottom panel. Also, support members 20 may be horizontally aligned rather vertically aligned as illustrated. Each of support members 20 includes front surface
22 and rear surface 24. Top portion 26 of each of support members 20 are affixed to top panel 16. Bottom portion 28 of each of support members 20 are affixed to bottom panel 18.
A plurality of elongated slots 30 are formed in each of support members 20. Slots 30 are aligned vertically and horizontally from one another. In the preferred embodiment, dimple portion 32 (shown in Figure 3) protrudes outwardly from the lower inner region of support members 20 adjacent each of slots 30.
Tape cartridge storage packs 40, described in the above-identified patent application, include rear suspension members 42. Rear suspension members resiliently engage in slots 30 over dimples 32. This engagement between rear suspension members 42 and slots 30 support tape cartridge storage packs 40 on rack 10. Tape cartridge storage packs 40 are designed to securely store 3480/3490 style data tape cartridges. Adaptor 300, shown in Figure 4, adapts rack 10 to engage and support a different style of tape cartridge pack than tape cartridge storage pack 40. This particular style of tape cartridge storage pack is manufactured by Storage Technology, Inc. , Louisville, Colorado for use in conjunction with the Storage Technology Automated Cartridge Library System. Tape cartridge pack 50 includes angular rear slot. Adaptor 300 allows tape cartridge storage pack to be securely stored on rack 10. Adaptor 300, shown in Figures 4(a), 4(b), and 5, includes plate member 310. Plate member 310, in the descriptive embodiment, is rectangularly-shaped steel sheet. Other shapes and configurations can be used under the teachings of the claimed invention as well as material choices. Plate member 310 includes rear surface 312 and front surface 314. Resilient suspension members 320, 322 are formed or attached to upper portion of rear surface 312 adjacent the corners of plate member 310. Resilient suspension members 324, 326 are formed or attached to a mid region of rear surface 312 adjacent the side edges of plate member 310. Distance "1" between vertically aligned suspension members 320, 324 is selected to engage vertically spaced slots 30 of support members 20 of rack 10.
Engaging member 330 extends upwardly outward at an angle from the upper portion of front surface 314 of plate member 310. The angle of extension of engaging member 330 from plate member 310 is substantially identical to the angle of the rear slot of the tape cartridge storage pack. Reinforcing member 332 is affixed between front surface 314 and engaging member 330 to reinforce engaging member 330 and to provide an abutment surface as described in detail below.
Abutment member 340 extends along the lower portion of front surface 314 of plate member 310. The depth "d," of abutment member 340 from front surface 314 is selected to maintain the tape cartridge storage pack vertically aligned as the tape cartridge storage pack is supported by adaptor 300 on rack 10.
In use, as shown in Figure 5, suspension members 320, 322, 324, 326 are inserted into slots 300 on support members 20. Suspension members 320, 322, 324, 326 engage over dimples 32 to secure adaptor 300 onto rack 10. Tape cartridge storage packs are secured onto adaptor 300 by the engagement of the rear slots on engaging member 330. Abutment member 340 engages a lower portion of the tape cartridge storage packs to maintain the packs vertically aligned to prevent the tape cartridges from falling from the tape cartridge storage packs. A plurality of tape cartridge storage packs can thus be securely supported on adaptor 300 and on rack 10.
A second adaptor 500 is illustrated in Figure 6. Adaptor 600 is designed to securely store eight millimeter (8mm) tape cartridges on rack 10. Adaptor 600 includes a box-like spacer member 610. Rear surface 612 of spacer member 610 has rear suspension members 620, 622, 624, 626 affixed or formed thereon in a manner and spacing similar to suspension members 320, 322, 324, 326 of adaptor 300. Thus, adaptor 600 can be installed onto rack 10 similar to adaptor 300 described above. Front surface 614 of spacer member 610 includes a plurality of slots 630 formed therein. Slots 630 are aligned vertically and horizontally with one another.
8mm tape cartridge storage pack 60, shown in Figure 7, includes rear suspension members 62 similar in design to rear suspension members 42 of 3480/3490 style tape cartridge holders 40 described above. Rear suspension members 62 of tape cartridge storage pack 60 are inserted into slots 630 of adaptor 600. Thus, tape cartridge storage packs 60 can be engaged and supported by adaptor 600 on rack 10, as shown in Figure 8. The width "w" of spacer member 610 is selected according to the desired depth of 8mm tape cartridges relative to rack 10. For instance, if both 3480/3490-style tape cartridges and 8mm tape cartridges are to be stored on the same rack, width "w" can be selected so that both styles of tape cartridges lie in approximately the same plane for ease of access.
An additional adaptor, not shown, is similar to adaptor 600 for storing four millimeter (4mm) tape cartridges on rack 10. This adaptor uses a tape cartridge holder having a box-like structure with rear suspension members. This adaptor includes box-like spacer member having rear suspension members arranged on the rear surface thereof. Rear suspension members are arranged similar to the rear suspension members of adaptor 300 and adaptor 600 for engagement into slots 30 of support members 20 of rack 10. Slots are formed in front surface of spacer member in horizontal and vertical alignment with one another. In use, this adaptor is supported on rack 10 by the engagement of rear suspension members on support members 20. Tape cartridge holders engage slots to be supported thereon. The width of the spacer member is selected so that 4mm tape cartridges in tape cartridge holders mounted by adaptor on rack 10 will be in substantially the same plane as other data storage media on the rack. An additional type of adaptor is intended to adapt rack 10 for storing optical disk media. One such adaptor is illustrated in Figure 9. Adaptor 1000 is designed to secure optical disk holders on rack 10. One style of optical disk holder stores five one-quarter (5 1/4) inch optical disks. Rear suspension members are formed on the rear of this optical disk holder. Adaptor 1000 includes plate member 1010 having rear surface 1012 and front surface 1014. Resilient suspension members 1020, 1022, 1024, 10256 extend outwardly from rear surface 1012 similar to the rear suspension members of adaptors 300, 600, for engaging slots 30 of rack 10. Slots 1030 are formed in front surface 1014 of plate member 1010. Slots 1030 are arranged for engagement with the suspension members of the optical disk holders. In use, adaptor 1000 is supported on rack 10 by the engagement of suspension members 1020, 1022, 1024, 1026 in slots 30 of support members 20. Optical disk holders are supported on adaptor 1000 by engagement of suspension members in slots 1030 of adaptor 1000.
An additional type of optical disk holder is designed to hold three one-half (3 1/2) inch optical disks. Adaptor 1100 is used to adapt rack 10 for securely supporting these optical disk holders on rack 10. Adaptor 1100 includes spacer member llio having resilient suspension members 1120, 1122, 1124, 1126 extending outwardly from its rear surface. Suspension members 1120, 1122, 1124, 1126 are arranged similar to the above-described suspension members for engagement with slots 30 on rack 10. Slots 1130 are formed in the front surface of spacer member 1110 in horizontal and vertical alignment for engagement with suspension members 92 on optical disk holders. In use, adaptor 1100 is installed on rack 10 by the engagement of suspension members 1120, 1122, 1124, 1126 with slots 30 on members 30 on rack 10. Optical disk holders are mounted on adaptor 1100 by engagement of suspension members with slots 1130. The width "w3" of spacer member 1110 is selected so the front edges of the optical disks are in substantially the same plane as other data storage media in rack 10.
The present invention provides various adaptors to accommodate existing rack systems with differing styles of data storage media. Not only can presently available media be stored on existing racks by the use of properly selected adaptors, but the existing racks can accommodate data storage media styles developed in the future. The present invention can be applied on rack systems having sliding racks in front of stationary racks. Also, other techniques of attaching adaptors onto existing racks can be used.
The present invention enables existing racks, such as rack 10 described above, to be adapted to securely store a variety of data storage media. An adaptor can be configured having a first surface for engaging the rack and a second surface on which data storage media holders can be secured. Thus, the problem of providing adequate storage facilities for differing data storage media can be solved.
The present invention is not meant to be limited by the above described embodiment. Other embodiment and variations of storing various styles of data storage media on a single rack system is considered to be within the scope of the inventive concept.
