Abstract

The invention relates to a device for detecting the presence of an electrically conducting object (7) in a predetermined detection area, comprising a capacitive sensor element (3), a second capacitive element arranged in connection to said sensor element (3), and means (9, 10) for detecting the variation in capacitance between the sensor element (3) and the object (7) caused by either present object (7) or absent object (7) by detecting a variation in potential of the sensor element (3). The invention is characterized in that the capacitive elements (3, 4) are of an essentially two-dimensional extension, with said second capacitive element having an area which exceeds the area of the sensor element (3), and with the size of said detection area being in relation to the difference in plate areas. By means of the invention, an improved device is provided for detecting presence, e.g. the presence of a person in a seat (1) in a vehicle.
