Abstract

A bitumen based aqueous slury composition for use in repairing and redressing roads and footpaths contains polypropylene fibres as reinforcement.

Description

TITLE: Materials for repairing and redressing road and footpath surfaces.
DESCRIPTION
This invention concerns materials for repairing and redressing
roads and footpaths.
Bitumen based aqueous slurries are often used for repairing and redressing roads and footpaths. The slurry is applied to the road or footpath surface by hand or by machine and left to set. Because of changes in weather conditions, ie. varying from freezing conditions to hot weather conditions, these bitumen based repairs can themselves crack and become
damaged.
An object of this invention is to improve bitumen based aqueous slurries for use in repairing and redressing roads and footpaths.
According to this invention there is provided a bitumen based aqueous slurry composition for use in repairing and redressing roads and footpaths which contain fibrous reinforcement.
Preferably the fibrous reinforcement is polymer based. Polypropylene fibres have been found to be particularly suitable for use as fibrous reinforcement for compositions of the invention, although other polymer fibres such as polyethylene and nylon may also be suitable. Fibrous reinforcement used in composition of the invention is preferably treated, such as coated, to stop fibres clinging together.
The fibrous reinforcement used in compositions of the invention is preferably in the form of fibres of 5 to 55mm in length, preferably of 5 to
7mm in length, especially about 6mm in length. In some circumstances fibre lengths in the range of 12 to 19mm may be useful. The thickness of fibres
used in the invention may vary typicallv upwards from 18 micron but is ideally in the range of 350 to 450 micron, especially about 400 micron.
Other thicknesses of fibre above and below the ideal range may also be useful in compositions of the invention.
The preferred compositions according to the invention are based on aqueous bitumen slurry emulsions. For some purposes emulsions may be polymer modified or may be clear, especially for making up coloured slurry compositions by addition of one or more pigments.
Other useful ingredients of bitumen slurry compositions of the invention include aggregate. Suitable as aggregate for use in the invention is granite, especially in the form of dust. Basalt and dolomite may also be used as aggregates in the compositions of the invention. A doping agent is
preferably also included in compositions of the invention. Doping agents as sold under the trade names Redicote El l , Stabiram M53, Stabiram 340 and Stabiram 3791 have been found to be particularly suitable for this purpose.
For hand laid slurry compositions of the invention it is advantageous to include a bulking material, especially in the form of fibres, such as sold under the trade name Interfibe.
Compositions of the invention may be made by mixing the ingredients by hand or in a mixing machine. The preferred method is to add to water a doping agent followed by the fibre reinforcement, aggregate and finally aqueous bitumen slurry emulsion. Optional ingredients such as the bulking fibres and Portland cement are preferably added to the mix before the bitumen slurry emulsion.
Compositions of the invention may be applied to a road or footpath in any suitable way. For some situations hand application may be suitable, such as for smaller areas being require, whilst for larger areas machine application may be preferred.
This invention will now be further described by the following Example
Example
A bitumen based aqueous slurry for use in repairing and redressing roads and footpaths was prepared in the following manner in a rotary mixer set at 42 rpm. Three gallons of water were added to the mixer followed by 1 pint of doping agent (Redicote El l). (Stabiram M53, Stabiram 340 and Stabiram 3791 are suitable alternatives). 75g of polypropylene fibres. Fibrin 1 were then added to the mixer to allow for dispersion following by 90Kg of granite aggregate. 172 gallons of bulking fibres (Interfibre XF) were added next together with lOOg of ordinary Portland and cement and the mixture stirred for a few seconds before addition of 6 gallons of K3-60 bitumen based slurry emulsion. The total mixing time from start to finish was about 5 minutes.
The slurry was then ready for application to a road or footpath by any suitable means. The slurry may be hand or machine applied.
