Definitions

  • This invention relates to a hairpiece and particularly, but not exclusively, to a false fringe of natural or synthetic hair.
  • False fringes are used both for cosmetic purposes and as fashion accessories. For example, if a user does not wish to actually cut their hair into a fringe style they may be able to attain the style by means of a false fringe.
  • a hairpiece comprising a fringe attached to a resilient headband wherein the fringe is attached to the headband in a curve or crescent shape.
  • the fringe is attached to the headband via a curved or crescent shaped weft.
  • the headband may be elasticated; it may be part fabric and part elastic.
  • the headband may be a moulded plastics headband. The resilience of the headband may facilitate its wear by a user. It may alleviate the necessity of tying the headband to keep it in place.
  • the hairpiece may comprise natural and/or synthetic hair.
  • the hairpiece may be made for a particular user using the user's own hair.
  • the headband may be continuous. Where the headband is of fabric it is preferably constructed as a band in the form of a circle which is part fabric and part elastic. Where the headband is of moulded plastics it is preferably a half or three quarters band which is held in place by a sprung construction of the band.
  • the hairpiece may have at least one securing comb to facilitate attachment to the user's natural hair, which may be arranged at the underside of the headband.
  • the curved or crescent shaped weft may help the hair to fall naturally and look realistic.
  • the hairpiece may have hair to the sides of the fringe; this may be intended to go over the wearer's ears.
  • the hair may be arranged to go rearwardly from the hairband.
  • the hair may be coloured, highlighted or curled.
  • the curve or crescent shape may be located on the part of the headband which is intended to sit above the user's ear when the band is in place.

  • the fringe 14 consists of numerous synthetic fibres which may be modacrylic, or in other embodiments may be natural hair fibres.
  • the fibres vary in length from about 7.5cm (3 inches) across the main part of the fringe 14 to 38cm (15 inches) or more at the longer side parts of the fringe 14.
  • the fibres of the fringe are bound together in a single weft 18 which is then attached to the headband 12 by stitching as can be seen in Fig 2.

  • the stitching 18 of the fibres to the headband 12, which can be seen again in Fig 3, is at an angle that allows the fibres of the fringe 14 to lie on the user's head at a correct angle so as to avoid a false appearance.
  • the shape of the stitching 18 also allows the long fibres of the fringe 14 to blend well with the wearer's own hair.
  • the long fibres can, for example, be placed behind the wearer's ear, in use.
  • the elastic After stitching the fibres to the headband 12, the elastic may be folded double and stitched to form the complete hairpiece 10.
  • the fibres may also be doubled and trimmed before stitching to the band 12.
  • a most important and unique feature of the hairband is the curved stitching 18 attaching the fringe 14 to the headband 12.
  • the method of attaching the fringe 14 can be described by reference to Figs 4a-d in particular.
  • Figs 4a and 4b show front and side views, respectively, of the headband 12 on a block 20 during manufacture of a hairpiece according to the invention.
  • the band 12 is placed on the block 20 inside out.
  • the fringe 14 is then attached to the band 12 by sewing the underside of the weft 18 to the band 12.
  • the fringe 14 can be seen stitched in place in Figs 4c and 4d.
  • the weft is stitched in a curve 22 up toward the top of the band 12.
  • this curve 22 is an important feature of the hairpiece.
  • a small space 24 is left between the end of the fringe 14 and the top of the band 12. This enables the band 12 to be folded down and secured to complete the hairpiece.
  • the fringe blends with the user's hair giving a natural appearance of a fringe without the user actually having to cut their natural hair into that style.
  • the curved attachment of the hair fibres to the band allows the hair to fall naturally from the headband and so the hair looks far more realistic than with known hairpieces of this type.
  • Hairpieces according to the present invention may be provided in various hair colours, for example so that the fibres blend naturally with the wearer's own hair colouring.
  • various fabrics can be used with the headband, for example, a dress fabric such as a black or red velvet, a floral print or a solid classic colour.
  • the weft of hair or fibres may be attached to a base black or white hair band with a variety of separate colours or patterns or pattern fabrics adapted to be attached to the hairband, for example, with VELCRO (Registered Trade Mark) on the underside or on a sleeve. In this way, the colour or style of the resilient band of a particular hairpiece may be changed by the user.
  • VELCRO Registered Trade Mark
  • the fibre may be pleated, cut and shaped and attached to the headband and then have beads attached in an African ethnic style.
  • the hairpiece may be provided in a standard length or format or provided in a rough format which is then cut to a desired shape and style by a hairdresser when first worn by the user.
  • the headband may be a sprung moulded plastics headband or fabric headband with at least one resilient portion.
  • the fibres or weft may be glued or otherwise attached to the headband instead of or in addition to stitching.
