Abstract

There is disclosed a brush whose bristles are arranged in rows and are of a rubber or similar material, characterised in that the bristles in at least the rearmost row are in the form of strips, the remaining bristles being of relatively thin section and generally pointed at their lower ends.

Description

PRUSH
This invention concerns a brush, by which term is meant an implement having a short handle and suitable for use with a dustpan or an implement having a longer handle and in the form of a broom.
Recently brushes having bristles of a rubber or similar material have become popular - they are particularly well suited for clearing hair from carpet but unsuited for sweeping fine material from a smooth surface.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a brush which overcomes the problem aforesaid.
According to the present invention there is provided a brush whose bristles are arranged in rows and are of a rubber or similar material, characterised in that the bristles in at least the rearmost row are in die form of strips, the remaining bristles being of relatively thin section and generally pointed at their lower ends.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description with reference to the figures of the accompanying drawing, which show, by way of example only, one form of brush embodying same.
Of the drawing :-
Figure 1 shows a side view of the brush; and
Figure 2 shows a fragmentary underneath view of the brush of Figure 1. Referring now to the drawing, it will be seen that the brush is in the form of a broom generally indicated at 10 having a long handle 11 and head 12.
The head 12 comprises an integral rubber moulding which provides both the bristles generally indicated at 14 and a socket 15 which is engaged by the handle 11. The rubber moulding is reinforced by an element of relatively hard plastics material (not shown).
The bristles 14 are arranged in rows. The bristles 14a in the two rearmost rows are in the form of strips, typically having a width of 1.5 - 2 cm. Those in one row are laterally displaced relative to those in the other so that as the broom is pushed over the floor, the strips 14a collectively form a contact which is continuous from one side of the head 12 to the other.
The remaining bristles 14b forward of the bristles 14a are relatively thin, of downwardly tapering circular cross-section being generally pointed at their lower ends.
In use the broom is effective in sweeping hairs from a wide variety of surfaces including carpet as well as dust or other fine material from smooth surfaces such as those provided by ceramic or vinyl tiles for example.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations, such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, being possible, without departing from the scope thereof.

Claims
