Description

SYSTEM FOR APPLYING A TEMPORARY COMMUNICATION SYSTEM ON A SUBSTRATE, AND METHOD FOR APPLICATION AND REMOVAL OF THE SYSTEM
The present invention concerns a system for application of an advertisement on a substrate, especially on floors. Usually the advertisement will be an advertisement for marketing purposes, which is meant to remain temporarily on the substrate, and which can easily be removed after some time. The invention also concerns a method for applying and removing said system. Such systems are preferably used for marketing purposes, e.g. in shops, shopping centers, exhibition halls, etc. They can also be used as e.g. direction signs on floors or on walls or ceilings.
Systems of this type are known from many patent publications. US patent 4 680 237 ddiscloses a method of placing coloured indicia on a porous surface by first applying a liquid layer of a metal interlock acrylic finish which is allowed to dry. Thereafter a pigmented layer of liquid metal interlock acrylic finish is applied over the base layer in the form of an advertisement or pattern. Over this an other acrylic finish can be applied. The layers can be removed with aqueous ammonia. One disadvantage with such a system is the time consuming drying of each layer before the next one can be applied. US patent 3 499 781 discloses a photo-polymerizable resin which is applied to a substrate. On this a liquid layer containing the advertisement is placed. On this again a clear, upper protection layer is placed. The layers are difficult to remove.
US patents 4 391 and 4 529 623 describe decoration layers for cars, which layers are difficult to remove.
US patent 5 320 693 is considered as the closest prior art, concerning a method of applying an indicia as a layer on a substrate, wherein a layer containing the indicia is affixed to the substrate, which layer has a pressure- sensitive adhesive on the side facing the substrate. Thereafter a liquid, alkali soluble polymeric material is applied to the layer of indicia, and this layer is allowed to dry. The upper layer can be removed with an alkaline solution and the indicia can be removed. The above mentioned coating system is of the "floor polish" type and will dissolve easily by usual cleaning with alkaline cleaning agents. It also has the disadvantage that the upper film is applied in liquid form and requires time to dry, which involves that this area of the floor cannot be used during a certain period of time.
The present coating system comprises a wax layer on the substrate, which wax has a melting point above the temperature of common cleaning agents, and preferably above 50°C, a coating which in the form of a laminate comprises an adhesive layer, an advertisement in the form of a layer, and a hard, wear and alkali resistant surface layer.
The wax can be of any type with a melting point above the use and cleaning temperature for the substrate. Preferably a wax with a melting point above 50°C is chosen in order to avoid melting during usual cleaning, On even substrates the wax layer can be very thin. On rough or uneven substrates it can be advantageous to use layers of higher thickness to level out the substrate.
The laminate consisting of the adhesive layer, the indicia/advertisement and the surface layer can advantageously be prepared in advance and simply be rolled out on the wax layer.
The invention also comprises a method for applying and removing the laminate. The method is characterised by applying a wax layer on the substrate, applying on the wax layer a laminate consisting of an adhesive layer, a layer containing the advertisement, and a wear resistant and alkali resistant surface layer, whereby the layers can be secured at the edges by means of a fast drying type of the surface layer material, the layers are removed by heating with a suitable heating means, such as hot air or hot water, which melts the wax, and the three layers are drawn off the substrate together, whereafter possible remaining wax is washed or wiped off. Wax layers can be applied as a wax emulsion, a slip wax, soluble wax, or the like. Then the laminate, consisting of the adhesive layer, the advertisement and the surface layer, is pasted on. The adhesive layer can be a contact glue or a pressure sensitive adhesive. The surface layer is advantageously polyurethane or epoxy based, but in principle it may be any material which is resistant to usual cleaning agents, especially alkaline cleaners. After the laminate has been placed on the substrate, it can be fixed in the edges by means of a fast drying type of the surface layer material or by means of another suitable transparent product, e.g. a water-based acrylic varnish. The fast drying version of the surface layer can be obtained by using more curing agent than what is used in the surface layer.
The layers can also be applied one by one. This can be of advantage if the layers are applied on large areas.
The laminate is removed by heating with warm water or by other suitable means so as to melt the wax, whereafter it can be drawn off.
The edge fixing can be efficiently removed by means of a diester based cleaning paste, such as Surface Treatment Systems "STS 7 L". The diesters are advantageously a mixture of 60 - 70 % dimethyl glutarate, 20 - 30 % dimethyl succinate and 10 - 20 % dimethyl adipic acid. To this mixture 5 - 10 % propylene glycol monomethyl ether, and auxiliary substances, are added to obtain a paste.
The build-up of the system is evident from figure 1 , where
S defines the substrate
1 defines the wax layer
2 defines the adhesive layer, - 3 defines the indicia/advertisement, and
4 defines the surface layer.
Example
A laminate was made consisting of an adhesive layer (STS B from Surface Treating Systems), a layer in the form of an advertisement and a surface layer (STS C from Surface Treating Systems).
An area of a floor was cleaned with the cleansing agent STS A from Surface Treating Systems, and provided with a wax having a melting point above 50°C. Then the laminate was placed thereon and secured at the edges with STS C.
The area was subjected to walking traffic during 3 weeks, with usual cleaning. The advertisement was not affected. After 3 weeks the area was warmed up with water (approx. 60 °C), the laminate was drawn off, the wax residues wiped off and the edges cleansed with diester based cleansing paste STS E (Surface Treating Systems).
