Abstract
An intrinsically safe emergency light and sound system comprising an impact resistant IP54 rated steel enclosure in which high intensity light emitting diodes are housed (13) together with a speaker (16). Their operation is controlled by a printed circuit board (14) and can be powered by an internal rechargeable battery (15). Enclosures are grouped in sets of three at intervals of five metres and connected by intrinsically safe heavy duty cable (11), and each set is located at intervals of between twenty and forty metres. When an incident or an explosion occurs causing smoke and dust the system can be activated by a switch signal to a remote trigger board. Alternatively when mains power is switched off the system will be activated, and sequentially flashing lights and audible tones set at a different pitch between sets will commence to operate. The system directs those who suffer reduced visibility and disorientation, due to smoke and dust, towards the safest direction of egress. Due to independence and severability of each set in the system, damage or removal of any one set will not disable the other sets from operating.

THE INTRINSICALLY SAFE EMERGENCY LIGHT AND SOUND SYSTEM PROVIDES A LEAD LIGHT SYSTEM THAT COMPRISES HIGH INTENSITY LIGHT EMITTING DIODES OPERA TING IN TANDEM WITH A UDIBLE TONES
HOUSED IN AN IMPACT RESISTANT SEALED METAL ENCLOSURE THA T CAN BE ACTIVA TED BY LOSS OF MAINS POWER OR LOCAL CONTROL OR REMOTE RADIO SIGNAL IN AN EMERGENCY TO ASSIST MINERS LOCA TE A SAFE EXIT FROM MINE GALLERIES FILLED WITH SMOKE AND DUST WHICH MAY FOLLOW FIRE OR EXPLOSIONS OR BOTH IN MINES.
IN ONE FORM THE SYSTEMS USES HIGH INTENSITY LIGHT EMITTING DIODES AFFIXED IN AN INTRINSICALLY SAFE IMPACT RESISTANT SEALED METAL ENCLOSURE RA TED TO STANDARD IP 54 STRUNG ALONG THE HEAD OF THE MINE GALLERY IN A CONFIGURAΗON THAT PROVIDES DIRECπONAL FLASHING ARROWS TOWARDS THE DIRECTION TO THE EXIT.
IN ANOTHER FORM AND OPERATING SIMULTANEOUSLY DIRECTIONAL INSTRUCTIONS ARE PROVIDED BY SEQUENTIAL HIGH PITCHED A UDIO TONES EMITTED FROM A SPEAKER HOUSED WITHIN THE SEALED ENCLOSURE WITH THE NUMBER OF PULSES VARIABLE BETWEEN SETS AND PROGRAMMED TOWARDS THE DIRECTION OF THE DESIGNA TED EXI
THE LIGHTS AND AUDIBLE SIGNALS ARE ACTIVATED BY EITHER LOSS OF MAINS POWER WHICH IS FED INTO AN INDUSTRY STANDARD INTRINSICALLY SAFE 240VAC/12VDC POWER SUPPLY UNIT OR BY LOCAL CONTROL.
POWER TO EACH CONTROL UNIT IS PROVIDED BY AN INTERNAL 4.8VDC INTRINSICALLY SAFE NI-CAD BATTERY WHICH WILL PROVIDE POWER FOR TWO HOURS AND CAN BE RECHARGED WHEN MAINS POWER IS RESTORED.
THE HIGH INTENSITY LIGHT EMITTING DIODES ARE MADE FROM GALLIUM ARSENIDE PHOSPHIDE SILICON SUBSTRA TE WITH PLASΗC LENS AND ARE ASSEMBLED TOGETHER WITH NICKEL COATED COPPER LEADS WHILE THE HIGH PITCHED A UDIBLE SOUNDS EMANA TE FROM A SPEAKER HOUSED WITHIN EACH IMPACT RESISTANT METAL UNIT WITH A CLEAR GLASS
WINDOW RATED TO IP54 STANDARD.

Claims

EMERGENCY CONDITIONS BY PROVIDING LIGHTS AND SOUNDS DIRECTIONAL INDICA TORS ENCLOSED IN IP 54 RA TED ENCLOSURES AFFIXED ALONG THE HEAD OF THE GALLERY WHICH WILL LEAD PERSONNEL AWAY FROM THE INCIDENT TOWARDS SAFE AREAS.
