Abstract

A vertical axis wind turbine which includes a drive shaft (1) supported in bearings (2) for rotation about the vertical axis. Support arms (3) extend from the shaft and pivotally support vanes (6) via hinges (7). A member (9) connects edges of the vanes on each arm, to cause the vanes to pivot in unison. Counterweights can be added to the vanes in order to control the speed of rotation.

DESCRIPTION OF THE MINCHEY WIND ENGINE
THE MINCHEY WIND ENGINE, FOUR VANE ENGINE CAN HAVE FOUR VALVES AND VALVES CAN BE ADDED AT MULTIBLES OF FOUR TO GET ANY SIZE DESIRED.
THREE VANE ENGINE CAN HAVE THREE VALVES AND VALVES CAN BE ADDED AT MULTIBLES OF THREE TO GET ANY SIZE ENGINE DESIRED.
THIS ENGINE CAN RANGE FROM A FRACTION OF A HORSE POWER TO AS MUCH AS 5000 HP AT A VERY ECONOMICAL COST TO BUILD. THE AIR VALVES CAN RANGE FROM 1 SQUARE INCH IN AREA TO A 100 SQUARE FOOT, OR MORE, IN AREA. THE OUT PUT HORSE POWER RATIO, IS COMMON TO THE SQUARE FOOT AREA OF THE AIR VALVES AND THE WIND VELOCITY.
THIS ENGINE TURNS THE SAME DIRECTION, NO MATTER WHICH WAY THE WIND BLOWS. THIS ENGINE CAN TURN CLOCK WISE OR COUNTER CLOCKWISE, DEPENDING ON WHICH SIDE OF THE SUPPORT STRUCTURE THE AIR VALVES HINGE ON.
THERE CAN BE COUNTER WEIGHTS ADDED TO THE AIR VALVES OPPOSITE THE HINGE END, TO CONTROL THE SPEED OF ENGINE BY CENTRIFICAL FORCE.
THE ENGINE DRIVE SHAFT IS SET IN A VERTICAL POSITION. THE AIR VALVES CAN BE STACKED ON TOP OF EACH OTHER OR STACKED END TO END TO MAKE A BIGGER CIRCLE. THE LARGER THE CIRCLE IS THE SLOWER THE ENGINE WILL TURN, BUT IT WILL INCREASE THE TORQUE ON THE DRIVE SHAFT.
THE ENGINE DRIVE SHAFT IS HELD IN PLACE BY TWO LARGE PILLOW BLOCK BEARINGS, ON THE LOWER END OF THE DRIVE SHAFT. THE DRIVE SHAFT AND BEARINGS VARY IN SIZE AS TO SUPPORT THE TORQUE OF THE ENGINE. THE TORQUE OF THE ENGINE VARRIES AS TO THE AREA OF THE AIR VALVES AND THE WIND VELOCITY.

Claims

AN ENGINE THAT CAN PRODUCE HORSE POWER FROM A FRACTION HP TO AS MUCH AS A 5000 HP, USING AIR VALVES THAT CAN RANGE IN AREA FROM 1 SQUARE INCH TO 100 SQUARE FOOT.
THE HORSE POWER PRODUCED IS COMMON TO THE SQUARE FOOT AREA OF THE AIR VALVES AND THE WIND VELOCITY, AND TURNS IN ONE DIRECTION, NO MATTER WHICH WAY THE WIND BLOWS, AND THE SPEED OF THE ENGINE CAN BE CONTROLLED BY ADDING COUNTER WEIGHTS TO THE AIR VALVES.
THE ENGINE DRIVE SHAFT IS IN A VERTICAL POSITION, WITH THE AIR VALVES STACKED ON TOP OF EACH OTHER OR END TO END. THE DRIVE SHAFT IS HELD IN PLACE WITH 2 PILLOW BLOCK BEARINGS.
