Abstract

A method of comminuting a tacky material includes the steps of mixing the material with a dry, finely ground powder. The mixture of the material and the powder is subjected to a cutting operation. The invention extends to particles of a tacky material which have been comminuted.

Description

THE COMMINUTING OF TACKY MATERIAL
This invention relates to the comminuting of tacky material, in particular foodstuffs.
It is often required to comminute tacky foodstuffs such as raisins in to small particles. Because of the sugary, tacky nature of the raisins this is very difficult to do.
According to the invention there is provided a method of comminuting tacky material which includes mixing the material with a dry, finely ground powder; and subjecting the mixture of the material and powder to a cutting operation.
Preferably, the material may be a foodstuff and the powder may be a flour.
Conveniently, the foodstuff and the flour mixture may be minced or milled by means of a high speed blade.
The foodstuff may conveniently be raisins and the flour may be oats flour.
The flour may be fine, particulate particles thereof being in the order of 200 microns.
The raisins and flour may be mixed together and then introduced into a chamber in which there is a high speed rotating and cutting blade. The applicant believes that the blade fluidises the flour which acts as a lubricant and coats exposed tacky surfaces. By means of the invention, raisins may be comminuted into particles having a thickness of about 0.2mm.
The invention extends to particles of a tacky material which have been comminuted in accordance with the method stated above.
The invention is now described by way of example. Equal parts of raisins and fine milled oats flour are mixed together in a dry mixing process. The mixing is done by hand or with a ribbon blender. The mixed material is introduced into a chamber where it is cut by means of a high speed cutting blade. An Osterizer type high speed blender is used for experimental quantities and a bowl cutter is used for larger quantities.
