Abstract

The invention concerns a screw for insertion into a bone, in particular for securing plates which help to fix bone parts. The screw has a body comprising a threaded section and a head which adjoins the latter directly or indirectly and on which a device for screwing the screw body into the bone is provided. The screw is characterized in that the device for screwing in the screw body is a shank which is integral with the head, at least one predetermined breaking point being formed in the connection region between the head and shank. The invention further concerns a tool for removing this screw or its screw body.

The invention relates to a screw for insertion into a bone, in particular for fixing plates which support the fixing of bone parts, having a Schraubenkδrper having a threaded portion and an indirectly or directly adjoining head to which a device for screwing in of the screw body in provided the bone. The invention further relates to a boring tool for such a screw or the screw body.

Bone screws in a very small version, with a head size, which is generally below 5 mm, are

normally provided on top of the head with a shallow slot or a cross slot for screwing the screw into the bone. The very flat design requires that also the slot or cross slot for tightening or loosening of the screw can only be very shallow. This means not only that the tool for manipulation of the screw is very difficult to be set, there is also the danger that the blade of the tool slipping and causing damage.

It is therefore an object of the invention to provide a screw available that is safe and without risk to use in the bones.

This object is achieved by a screw according to Claim. 1 Advantageous embodiments are the subject matter of the claims.

The screw according to the invention is characterized in that the means for screwing in of the screw body is integrally formed with the head shaft, wherein in the connecting region between the head and shaft at least one predetermined breaking point is formed. Schraubenkδrper and Eindreh¬ tool initially are thus available as a unit. This unit can be screwed by a suitable rotary drive at low rotational speeds in the bones. After the screw-in depth is reached, the torque acting on the predetermined break point grows to such an extent that the screw body breaks away from the shaft and is thus placed in the bone.

Therefore, advantageously, the at least one predetermined breaking point defines an area which is dimensioned according to a desired maximum tightening torque of the screw. The measure of such a surface can, optionally also dependent on the choice of material, be determined by experiments.

According to a particularly preferred embodiment, the screw body at the head of a web on to which the shaft is connected. The predetermined breaking point is in this case on the side facing the shaft side of the web.
