Definitions

  • the present invention relates to cases for data carrying discs.
  • Data carrying discs such as audio compact discs, CD- ROMs, video discs and so forth incorporate a recording medium in which data may be recorded and subsequently retrieved, typically by an optical or a magnetic device acting through a data surface of the disc.
  • the disc has a central through hole, the principal purpose of which is to facilitate rotation of the disc about its centre during retrieval and/or recording of data.
  • a storage case In order to protect such a disc from damage, it is common practice to provide it with a storage case. At is simplest, this may be little more than an envelope in which a disc may be stored. However, in applications where it is to be expected that a disc will be frequently inserted into and removed from its case, it may be preferable that the data surface does not come into contact with the case, to avoid the risk of its being damaged by abrasion. This is a particularly important consideration in respect of audio compact discs, which are liable to experience casual handling and poor cleanliness .
  • a further important feature of a case for a data carrying disc is its ability to display information about the disc. This information may comprise a printed sheet, a booklet, or both.
  • This trend for producing CD-Rom discs for computers (which are physically similar to audio compact discs) has given rise to a need for increased documentation to accompany a disc. Therefore the amount of space available for receiving documentation is of particular importance in a case for such discs.
  • the most commonly used type of case for audio compact discs is constructed from three separate parts: a disc storage tray, a base, and a lid.
  • the base and the lid are made of a hard transparent plastics material
  • the disc storage tray is made of an opaque hard plastics material.
  • the disc storage tray is rectangular in plan and has a recess in which a disc may be stored. Centrally of the recess, there is a raised portion from which projects a plurality of lugs. These are arranged to grip the disc about is central hole in order to retain the disc in place in the recess.
  • the disc storage tray is secured within the base.
  • the lid is pivotally connected to the base such that it can * be moved between a closed condition in which it encloses a disc held in the tray, and an open condition in which the tray is freely accessible.
  • This type of case has many disadvantages: it can only store a quite thin booklet of information (this being typically secured to the lid) ; it is prone to damage on account of its being constructed from a brittle material; and it is expensive to manufacture due to its complexity.
  • An aim of the present invention is to ameliorate or overcome the problems associated with the above described cases for data carrying discs.
  • the present invention provides a case for storing a data carrying disc formed by folding a blank of sheet material, and having a disc holding formation for holding a disc by engagement with portions of the disc adjacent its central hole.

  • the disc holding formation may be integral with the single sheet of material, this having the advantage of simplicity and convenience of manufacture.
  • the disc holding formation may comprise a discrete component which cooperates with the single sheet.
