Abstract

The invention pertains to an early detonation device (9) for detonating the propellant charge of an airbag gas generator for a vehicle occupant protection system, based on local thermal heating of the gas generator casing (1). The early detonation device is provided with a container (10) filled with a primary detonating agent (11), e.g. in powder form, which ignites spontaneously at temperatures below 400 °C, preferably between 150 and 200 °C. The container (10) inside the gas generator casing (1) is in close heat-conducting contact (12) with an upper section (2) of the gas generator casing (1) and immediately adjacent to a detonator (7) filled with a secondary detonating agent; this detonator (7) can be detonated by the primary detonating agent (11) and then detonates the propellant charge of the airbag gas generator. The early detonation device (9) is characterised in that the container (10) with the primary detonating agent (11) is designed and arranged inside the gas generator casing (1) in such a way as to be in close heat-conducting surface contact with a lower section (3) of the gas generator casing (1) opposite the upper section (2). With this arrangement, and with minimal construction costs, the delay time between the commencement of local heating of the gas generator casing (1) and detonation of the early detonation device (9) is reduced and the response probability increased.
