Abstract

Powder compositions which exhibit fluid properties when subjected to mechanical agitation or aeration settle as a compacted solid when agitation/aeration ceases. The compositions exhibit behaviour substantially free of slugging, channelling and jetting when aerated. Typical are toner compositions comprising particulate synthetic thermoplastic material with at least one refractory metal oxide.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS [received by the International Bureau on 12 December 1996 (12.12.96); original claim 1 amended; original claim 7 cancelled; original claims 8-24 renumbered as claims 7-23; remaining claims unchanged (3 pages)]
1. A powder toner composition comprising a particulate synthetic thermoplastic material and a particulate refractory metal oxide and a secondary refractory metal oxide, wherein the particulate synthetic thermoplastic material is surface coated with the particulate and secondary refractory metal oxides and at least one of the primary and secondary refractory metal oxides is surface-treated.
2. A powder composition which exhibits fluid properties when subjected to mechanical agitation or aeration and which settles as a compacted solid when the agitation or aeration ceases, said composition exhibiting behaviour substantially free of slugging, channelling and jetting when aerated.
3. A composition according to claim 1, which exhibits fluid properties when subjected to mechanical agitation or aeration and which settles as a compacted solid when the agitation or aeration ceases, said composition exhibiting behaviour substantially free of slugging, channelling and jetting when aerated.
4 A composition according to claim 2, formulated as a toner for use in electrostatic reproduction apparatus.
5. A composition according to claim 4, comprising a particulate synthetic thermoplastic material blended with a particulate refractory metal oxide material.
6. A composition according to claim 5, wherein the particulate refractory metal oxide material comprises a primary refractory oxide and a secondary refractory metal oxide.
7. A composition according to any preceding claim, wherein the surface-treated refractory metal oxide is surface coated with a silane coupling agent.
8. A composition according to any of claims 1, 3, 6 or 7, wherein the primary refractory metal oxide is a silica.
9. A composition according to any one of claims 1, 3 or 6 to 8, wherein the secondary refractory metal oxide is selected from titanium dioxide and alumina.
10. A composition according to any of claims 1, 3 or 6 to 9, wherein the amounts of the primary and secondary refractory metal oxides are independently selected from the range from 0.05 to 5.0% by weight of the total composition.
11. A composition according to any of claims 1, 3 or 6 to 10, wherein the particles of refractory metal oxide material have a d50 mean particle diameter of less than 1 micron.
12. A composition according to any of claims 1, 3 or 6 to 11, wherein the particulate thermoplastic material comprises a polyester resin.
13. A composition according to claim 12, wherein the polyester resin has at least one hydroxyl functional group.
14. A composition according to any of claims 1, 3 or 5 to 13, wherein the composition comprises a magnetizable material and at least 60% by weight of the particulate thermoplastic material.
15. A composition according to any of claims 1, 3 or 5 to 13, comprising at least 85% by weight of the particulate thermoplastic material.
16. A composition according to any of claims 1, 3 or 5 to 14, comprising no more than 98% by weight of the particulate thermoplastic material.
17. A composition according to any of claims 1, 3 or 5 to 16, wherein the particulate thermoplastic material has a dielectric constant of no more than 10.
18. A composition according to any preceding claim, comprising a charge control agent.
19. A composition according to any preceding claim, wherein the amount of the charge control agent is from 0.5 to 5% by weight of the total composition.
20. A composition according to any preceding claim, comprising a powder lubricant.
21. A composition according to any preceding claim, wherein the amount of powder lubricant is no more than 1% by weight of the total composition.
22. A composition according to any preceding claim, having a compaction ratio of at least 3:2.
23. A composition according to any preceding claim, having a viscosity of from 1 to 8 centipoise.
