"EDGE RETRACTOR DEVICE FOR DENTAL SURGERY"
The present invention relates to an edge retractor device for dental surgery.
In dental surgery, when the dentist must perform a surgical operation inside the mouth of a patient for grafting, bone cleaning and bone arrangement operations, and so forth, after that gingiva or tissue are incised, it is necessary that during surgery the so created incision edges are kept spaced apart from each other and opened.
For that purpose, in general, complex tools or periosteal elevators must be used which, kept by the dental surgeon or her/his assistant in her/his hand, must be anyway entered inside the patient's mouth. All this results in discomfort both for the same patient and, above all, for the dental surgeon, because the latter meets with a certain difficulty to operate smoothly.
Furthermore, it may happen that the assistant must supply the dental surgeon with other tools, or must directly take part in another way in the same operation; if she/he has her/his hands engaged as said above, such a direct intervention is not possible. Furthermore, inside the mouth of the patient other tools are already contained, such as a saliva ejector and so forth, and thus a further tool, as a periosteal elevator, to be entered inside the mouth cavity, creates further discomfort and can cause hindrance problems.
The purpose of the present invention is of providing a device acting on said incision edges, which device makes it possible said drawbacks to be got rid of and allows surgery to be performed in a smoother and more comfortable way inside a patient' s mouth cavity.
Another purpose surely is of liberating the surgeon's and assistant's hands as far as possible, in order to make it possible every surgical operation to be carried out with minimal staff intervention and minimal discomfort for patient.
These purposes according to the present invention are achieved by providing an edge retractor device for dental surgery suitable for being positioned in an incision of a tissue on a bone, characterized in that said device comprises a laminar element, bent according to a reversed-ΛΛU" shape, constituted by two free sides and a central side which connects them, with a pair of extending portions being provided adjacent to terminal portions of said free sides of the reversed-^U" portion, which extended portions are orientated perpendicularly to the plane which contains the cross-section of the reversed-"U"-shaped portion. The characteristics and advantages of an edge retractor device according to the present invention will be better evident from the following exemplifying, non-limitative disclosure, made by referring to the accompanying schematic drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a side elevation view, on an enlarged scale, of a device for dental surgery according to the present invention;
Figure 2 shows a front elevation view according to the arrow WF" of Figure 1, of a device according to the present invention; and
Figure 3 shows a bottom plan view of the device of Figure 1.
Referring to the figures, an edge retractor device for dental surgery realized according to the present invention is displayed and generally indicated with (11) .
The device comprises a laminar element caused to take a bent shape according to a reversed-wU" outline, which device is constituted by two free sides (12) and a central side (13) which connects them.
Nearby the end portions of said free sides (12) of the "U"-shaped piece, two extended portions, or protrusions (14) are provided, which are orientated perpendicularly to the plane which- contains the cross-section of the "U"-shaped portion; in such a way, the free sides (12) and the protruding portions (14) generate an "L"-shaped outline.
The element (11), at its ends of both said free sides (12) of the x,U"-bent portion and of the extending portions (14) is provided with a toothing or serrated edge (15) sligthly bent towards the interior of the WU" outline. Also the free sides
(12) are, according to a preferred exemplifying embodiment, convergent towards each other.
The length of the extended portions (14) can be different according to the length of the incision which the dental surgeon must make, and of the edges which must be kept opened and spaced apart from each other.
The flattened laminar element can be made from stainless steel, for example, "302" grade stainless steel, or titanium, or from a plastic material resistant up to a temperature of at least 150°C.
In the example shown, both free sides (12) extend from the central side (13) with "S"-bent regions (16) being interposed in order to favour the elasticity of the device. The central side (13) is straight, i.e., planar, but it could anyway be provided with a bent contour suitable for better favouring the whole device grasping by the user.
A device according to the present invention, grasped with suitable pincers, or a similar application tool, is kept opened at its free ends.
In this position, it is placed between the edges of a cut made by the surgeon in the gingiva on a bone.
After being released on the bone onto which it gets anchored, the device returns to its initial position and keeps well opened and spaced apart the periosteal edges, thus facilitating the surgery.
Thanks to its extremely small overall dimensions and its not requiring of being kept engaged by means of additional tools, the device
according to the present invention leaves the operating zone completely free for entering the further useful tools for the operation, and, above all, it does not generate any hindrance problems inside patient's mouth cavity.
According to a further advangeous embodiment, inside the interior of the "U"-shaped portion, between both sides (12) one or two small tubes (17) can be provided which are connected to each other at the top end of the device and can be connected with an ejector for saliva and serum released during the operation.
Also the patient, by having her/his mouth more free, suffers less discomfort and bears more easily the intervention by the dental surgeon.
The device can be made and supplied in a whole range of suitable sizes for the type of surgery which must be carried out. Of course, inside the kit package containing a plurality of sizes of the device according to the present invention, also the tool, or pincers, necessary for correctly positioning the device, can be provided.
The device according to the present invention, according to the material it is made from, can be of disposable type or it can be re-useable after a proper sterilization.
