Abstract

An apparatus for recording a digital information signal in slant tracks on a longitudinal magnetic record carrier (10) is described. The apparatus is capable of recording a digital information signal and at least one digital auxiliary signal in a track. The apparatus comprises an input terminal (1) for receiving the digital information signal and an input terminal (2) for receiving the at least one digital auxiliary signal. Channel encoding means (6) are present for carrying out a channel encoding step on the digital information signal so as to obtain a channel encoded digital information signal. Writing means (8) are present for writing the channel encoded digital information signal and the digital auxiliary signal in a track. The apparatus is adapted to function in a first recording mode in which said channel encoded digital information signal is recorded in a first track portion (TP1) of the tracks and a second recording mode in which the apparatus is adapted to record the channel encoded digital information signal in a second track portion (TP2) of the tracks and the at least one digital auxiliary signal in a third track portion (TP3) in the tracks. The second and third track portions lie within said first track portions (TP1). More specifically, the second and third track portion in the track are separated by an edit gap (G4), and the total length of the second and third track portion and the edit gap equals the length (L1) of the first track portion.
