Abstract

A locking device comprises a threaded stud or bolt (10) having threaded stud or bolt (10) having a tapered, axial recess (18) at one end into which a tapered plug (24) is forced (by screwing) to provide the locking effect by a wedging action. The taper angle of the plug (24) is greater than that of the bore (18) to enhance the locking procedure and provide improved locking effect in use.

Claims

20AMENDED CLAIMS[received by the International Bureau on 24 June 1996 (24.06.96); original claims 1-14 replaced by amended claims 1-9 (2 pages)]
1. A locking device (10,24) comprising a first component (10) in the form of a shank (10) having a tapered recess (18) in one end thereof, and a tapered plug (24), which is adapted to be forced into the recess (18) in order to provide the locking effect, wherein the included taper angle of the recess (18) differs from that of the plug (24) whereby as the plug is forced into the recess, initially there will be line ring contact between the recess (18) and plug (24) surface, but with contained forcing, the shank (10) around the recess (18) splays towards surface contact between the recess (18) and plug (24), characterised in that the device is adapted for use as a fixing in a blind hole in masonry or the like, and the shank is a sleeve (98) having a through bore o f which a portion (96) at one end is threaded to receive a threaded bolt (94) on the end of which the plug (92) is integrally formed, said tapered recess (100) reducing in size in a direction away from said one end of the sleeve (98) and the included taper angle of the recess being greater than that of the plug.
2. A locking device according to Claim 1 characterised in that the relationship between the included taper angles of the recess (18) and plug (24) are such that when the plug is fully driven home to the locking position, and splaying of the shank (10) around the recess (18) is such as to provide face to face contact between the recess (18) and plug surface (26).
3. A locking device according to Claim 1 or 2, characterised in that the taper angle of the plug (24) is of the order of 6° less than that of the recess (18).
4. A locking device according to any preceding claim, characterised by slits (16) in the end of the shank (10) dividing it into sections so that the sections can splay to provide the locking effect.
5. A locking device according to any preceding Claim , characterised in that the locking bolt is provided with a locking washer at the head end which can apply a tensioning effect to the locking bolt when it is in the locked position.
6. A locking device according to any preceding claim, wherein the bolt is a scaffold bolt having a scaffold ring head (90).
7. A vehicle wheel stud comprising a first component (110, 130) in the form of a shank (110, 130) having a tapered recess (118, 138) in the outer end thereof, and a tapered plug (24), which is adapted to be screwed into the recess (118, 138) in order to provide the locking effect.
8. A locking device according to Claim 6 characterised by slits (16) in the end of the shank (110, 130) dividing it into sections so that the sections can splay to provide the locking effect.
9. A locking arrangement according to claim 6 or 7, characterised in that the plug and recess have differing taper angles.
