Abstract

A storage device is provided which has stored therein an electronic image of a fingerprint of an individual authorized to conduct a transaction (34). A finger, of a person conducting the transaction, is scanned (18 and 24) to form electronic data signals (28) corresponding to an electronic representation of the fingerprint. The stored electronic image is compared (32) with the electronic data signals corresponding to the image fingerprint of the person conducting the transaction. The transaction is authorized only when the electronic data signals corresponding to the image fingerprint of the person conducting the transaction substantially correlate with the stored electronic image of the fingerprint of the individual authorized to conduct the transaction. In one embodiment, the electronic data signals corresponding to the image of the fingerprint of the person conducting the transaction are transmitted over the encrypted communication link to a remote comparator which compares the stored electronic image with the electronic data signals corresponding to the image of the fingerprint of the person conducting the transaction.

A method for electronically authorizing a financial transaction over a communication network, including storing in a storage device an electronic image of a fingerprint of an individual authorized to conduct said financial transaction, reading a fingerprint of a person conducting the financial transaction to form digitized electronic data signals corresponding to said fingerprint, comparing said stored electronic image with said digitized electronic data signals, transmitting to a payment source over the communication network said digitized electronic data signals, said comparing step being conducted prior to said transmitting step for local validation of the financial transaction, and said comparing step being conducted subsequent to said transmitting step for remote validation of the financial transaction, providing an authorization signal when the digitized electronic data signals substantially correlate with the stored electronic image of the fingerprint of the individual authorized to conduct the financial transaction, and authorizing the financial transaction when said authorization signal is provided.
2. The method of Claim 1 where there is stored in the storage device a plurality of electronic fingerprint images of the individual authorized to conduct said financial transaction, said electronic fingerprint images being arranged in predetermined sequence to form a fingerprint code.
3. The method of Claim 1 where the digitized electronic data signals are encrypted for transmission over the communication network and decrypted at the payment source.
23
4. The method of Claim 1 where a thermal testing device is provided which determines that the fingerprint being read is a finger of a living person.
5. The method of Claim 1 where a communication device is utilized to transmit and receive voice signals over said network between the person conducting the financial transaction and the payment source.
6. The method of Claim 1 where reading said fingerprint is conducted by a fingerprint reader including a platen on which a finger of the person conducting the financial transaction is placed, a frame grabber which captures an image of the fingerprint of said finger, and a digitizer device which converts said image into digitized electronic data signals corresponding to the fingerprint of said person.
7. The method of Claim 1 where comparing said stored electronic image with said digitized electronic data signals is conducted by a comparator at a location remote from the person conducting the transaction.
8. The method of Claim 1 where comparing said stored electronic image with said electronic data signals is conducted by a comparator at the same location as the person conducting the transaction.
9. The method of Claim 1 where the person conducting the financial transaction employs a credit card providing account information and identifying the payment source and a point of sale device is used to read said account information which is transmitted over the communication network to said payment source.
10. The method of Claim 1 where the financial transaction entails authorizing the transfer of funds between accounts.
11. The method of Claim 1 where the financial transaction entails authorizing the payment of bills electronically, and includes providing a transaction data input device having a first selector for selecting a creditor to whom a payment is to be made, a second selector for selecting the payment source for the creditor, and a numeric selector for specifying a payment amount to the creditor, transmitting a transaction signal corresponding to the payment source and payment amount from the transaction data input device to the creditor, said authorization signal facilitating the establishment of a connection between the transaction data input device and the selected creditor, said authorization signal enabling the transaction signal to be transmitted to the selected creditor upon the establishment of said connection.
12. The method of Claim 11 where said transaction data input device includes a keyboard for entering a personal identification number into the transaction data input device, and a second comparator which compares the personal identification number to a stored identification number and establishes a correlation therebetween, the transmission of the authorization signal and the establishment of an exact correlation between the personal identification number and the stored identification number facilitating the establishment of the connection between the transaction data input device and the selected creditor.
