- This invention relates to a welding device for the attachment of plastic parts on plastic structures.
- plastic structures such as tanks and pipes are included in relations in which they shall be connected to, attached to or rest against other structure members, it is often necessary to provide the plastic structures with additional parts such as sockets, fasteners, fittings, support devices and other plastic parts.
- a socket When mass-producing thin-walled plastic constructions, such as fuel tanks for vehicles, automatized welding devices are used.
- a socket shall be fastened on a fuel tank by means of a known welding device, one face of a heated metal piece, called a “heating mirror”, is carried into physical contact with the surface of the tank. Simultaneously, the socket is carried into contact with another hot face, normally the rear side of said heating mirror.
- the heating mirror and the plastic part to be welded are carried, each by means of a piston cylinder of its own, the piston cylinders being directed towards a common point, where the plast part is to be welded to the plastic construction.
- the heating mirror is first passed into contact with the plastic construction, whereafter the plastic part is carried into contact with the rear side of the heating mirror.
- the plastic part is slightly withdrawn, whereafter the heating mirror is pulled away from the welding zone.
- a disadvantage of prior art welding devices is that they are space-requiring. An important result of this is that, for reasons of space, the piston cylinders displacing plastic part and heating mirror, respectively, must be directed towards the welding zone at mutually different angles.
- the plastic part is usually carried in perpendicular to the surface of the plastic construction, while the heating mirror is passed in obliquely.
- the welding device accommodates, thus, a relatively large space around the plastic part to be welded. If many plastic parts are to be welded within a limited area on a plastic construction, it is, due to lack of space, necessary to arrange more welding stations and to displace the plastic construction from one station to another. Naturally, this would cause a substantial rise in cost.
- the plastic part has a greater thickness of material than the plastic structure and, thus, requires more heat. Heating of the plastic part takes, therefore, more time than heating of the welding zone on the plastic structure.
- the plastic part can not come into contact with the heating mirror before this is in place and in contact with the plastic structure. Therefore, it is a problem in prior art welding devices that the plastic structure is damaged through the supply of too much heat.
- the object of the invention is to provide an improved welding device adapted to attach plastic parts to plastic structures.
- Figure 1 shows, in a perspective view obliquely from above, a welding device having a channel for the supply of parts, a catcher and a heating mirror in an initial position;
- Figure 2 shows, in a perspective view obliquely from below, the welding device equipped with said supply channel for parts in active position;
- Figure 3 shows, in a perspective view obliquely from below, the welding device with the heating mirror in active position.
- reference numeral 1 denotes a piston cylinder having a torsionally rigid piston rod 2 attached to a head 3.
- a catcher 4 of known type is adapted to catch and keep plastic parts between fingers 5.
- the catcher 4 is disposed linearly movable in the longitudinal direction of the piston rod 2, the catcher 4 being mounted on a block 6 slidable on guides 7 and displaceable by means of a piston cylinder 8.
- a heating mirror 9 is pivotally disposed between two parallel arms 10. Further, the arms 10 are pivotally suspended in the head 3, and a revolving motor 12 is adapted to move the arms 10 together with the heating mirror 9 between two external positions such as shown in figure 2 and 3, respectively.
- a movable channel 13 is attached to arms 14 which are rotatably fastened to a bracket 15 adjustably fixed to the piston cylinder 1.
- a piston cylinder 16 is disposed between the arms 14 and the bracket 15 and is adapted to move the channel 13 such that the outlet end of the channel 13 may be brought inwards to a position in front of the fingers 5 of the catcher 4, such as shown in figure 2.
- the channel 13 is connected to a feeding device for plastic parts, not shown, and is adapted to conduct plastic parts forwardly to the fingers 5 of the catcher 4.
- the channel 13 is brought into the active position such as shown in figure 2 by means of the piston cylinder 16, and the plastic part is conducted through the channel 13 in between the fingers 5 of the catcher 4, whereafter the catcher 4 is moved towards the outlet of the channel 13 by means of the piston cylinder 8.
- the fingers 5 of the catcher 4 is activated and catches the plastic part, whereafter the catcher 4 returns of pulls the plastic part out from the channel 13 which, then, is brought back into initial position by means of the piston cylinder 16.
- the revolving motor 12 rotates the arms 10, so that the heating mirror 9 is placed in front of the fingers 5, see figure 3.
- the piston cylinder 8 is activated, and the catcher 4 is displaced such that the plastic part, not shown, is pressed against the rear side of the heating mirror 9.
- the piston cylinder 1 is activated and carries the front side of the heating mirror against a plastic structure, not shown, whereafter the piston cylinder is made powerless as known per se. Inserting a suitable waiting time between the time when the plastic part is pressed against the rear side of the heating mirror 9 and the time when the front side of the heating mirror comes into contact with the plastic structure, correct amount of heat in relation to material thickness can be supplied to plastic part and plastic structure. If the plastic structure needs more heat than the plastic part, the heating mirror 9 is first brought inwards to the plastic structure, whereafter the plastic part - subsequent to an appropriate waiting time - is brought into contact with the rear side of the heating mirror 9.
- the head 3 with the heating mirror 9 is slightly withdrawn out from the plastic structure.
- the revolving motor 12 is activated and swings the arms 10 with the heating mirror 9 aside, and the piston cylinder 1 is carried forwardly such that the heated face of the plastic part comes into contact with the heated face of the plastic structure and is welded thereto.
- the fingers 5 of the catcher 4 are opened, and the piston cylinder 1 is activated in order to pull the head 3 back into initial position.
