Definitions
- the present invention relates generally to oral health care devices and in particular to a device which is modifiable to suit the teeth and gum cleaning requirements of individual users.
- the prior art devices While allowing the connection of various attachments, the prior art devices have been quite limited in their scope for allowing any adjustment of the position and orientation of the attachment to suit the individual requirements of a user.
- the attachments are connected to the handle by a friction fit which provides a rigid connection between the attachment and the handle. Such a rigid connection can lead to a situation where the user of the devices can cause quite significant damage to their teeth or gums if, for example, the device slips during use.
- the present invention consists in a toothbrush comprising a bristle carrying head and a handle, the handle having an aperture which engages a resiliently flexible mounting which supports an oral health care aid.
- the aperture is preferably normal to a longitudinal axis of the handle and is located adjacent to an end of the device distal to the head.
- the aperture in preferre embodiments, can comprise a circular hole or a slot extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the handle.
- the aperture preferably has a minimum cross-sectional dimension, being in the case of a circular hole its diameter, of at least 4 millimetres, preferably at least millimetres and most preferably at least 6 millimetres.
- the aperture also preferably has a length measured throug the thickness of the handle of at least 4 millimetres mor preferably at least 5 millimetres and most preferably at least 6 millimetres.
- the aperture and the mounting are also preferably arranged such that the oral health care aid may be rotated relative to the handle by a user of the device.
- the handle is preferably substantially linear, however, the toothbrush may be fabricated with a bend or be bendable by the user, particularly in the region of a neck between the head and the handle, so as to meet their individual requirements.
- the oral health care aid is preferably arranged to clean or provide viewing of portions of the teeth and gums which are hard to reach or difficult to clean with a standard toothbrush.
- the oral health care aid is preferably either formed of a rigid non-flexible material such as a hard synthetic plastics material or a metal, with or without bristles, floss or the like attached thereto. In such an arrangement it is possible to use bristles which are relatively stiff along their length.
- Using the flexible mounting for the oral health care aid allows that health care aid to incorporate bristles shorter, and thus stiffer, than are usually acceptable in a toothbrush. This renders the bristles more effective in cleaning the teeth while the flexible mounting avoids unacceptable abrasion of the gums and other soft mouth parts.
- the oral health care aid is preferably asymmetric about its longitudinal axis.
- An example of such an aid being a linear tufted brush.
- the oral health care aid comprises a rigid member being movable laterally, ie. transversely to its longitudinal axis, relative to the handle due to the resilience of the resiliently flexible mounting.
- An example of such an aid being an interproximal brush.
- the oral health care aid may comprise a tufted brush, an interproximal brush, a dental floss holder or a mirror, all of which can be interchanged by the user of the devic as required.
- the brush and the oral health care aid preferably project outwardly from the device in the same direction.
- Fig. 1 is an underneath plan view of a toothbrush having an oral health care aid resiliently mounted to the handle;

- Fig. 11 is a side elevational view of another embodiment of a dental mirror for attachment to the toothbrush of Fig. 1; and Fig. 12 is an edge elevational view of the mirror of Fig. 11. Detailed Description of the Drawings
- a toothbrush according to the present invention is generally shown as 10 in Figs. 1-3.
- the toothbrush comprises a head portion 11 with bristles 12 attached thereto, a handle portion 13 and an intermediate portion 14.
- an oral health care aid 17 can be resiliently mounted.
- the aid 17 is an interproximal brush 40.
- the interproximal brush 40 is resiliently mounted in the handle 13 by a resiliently flexible mounting grommet 18 which engages in the circular aperture 16.
- the grommet 18 can be rotated in the aperture 16 such that the health care aid 17 is located in a position which suits a user's individual requirements.
- FIGs 4-12 Various embodiments of oral health care aids that are suitable for attachment to the handle 13 of the toothbrush 11 are depicted in Figs 4-12.
- Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate an asymmetric oral health care aid 20 comprising a brush having three tufts 21 in linear alignment and mounted in the grommet 18. This brush is effective in cleaning interproximal areas and beneath the free gingival margin.
- Figs. 6 and 7 illustrate an aid 30 comprising a dental floss holder 31.
- the holder 31 is mounted to a grommet 18 which provides a resiliently flexible mounting to the handle 13.
- the holder 31 has a wishbone arrangement comprising two substantially rigid arms 32 and 33 spaced apart and between which dental floss 34 is suspended.
- Fig. 8 is an enlargement of the interproximal brush 40 depicted in Figs. 2 and 3.
- the brush 40 comprises a substantially rigid post 41 and a plurality of bristles 42 extending substantially horizontally and outwardly from the post 41. While a conical arrangement is depicted in Fig. 8, it is also common for the brush to exhibit a substantially cylindrical arrangement.
- Figs. 9 to 12 depict two embodiments of a dental mirror 50 adapted to be mounted to the handle 13 of the toothbrush 10.
- the dental mirror 50 comprises a mirror portion 51 connected to a post 52 which is mounted in th grommet 18.
- the post 52 is located in the grommet via a ball 53 and socket 54 arrangement which facilitates precise control the rotation of the mirror portion 51 by the user of the device.
