Abstract
The invention concerns a collapsible wheelchair frame which is constructed so that the wheelchair can be easily folded for carrying or transportation, without the use of any additional tools. In addition, the proposed construction provides sufficient solidity in using the wheelchair. The construction of a collapsible wheelchair frame in accordance with the invention allows the linking of joint parts (A through F) with flexible, interlinked crossbars (5, 5', 10, 10', 11, 11') in such a way that the frame is longitudinally and transversely foldable by pulling out seat rods (13, 13') stuck into the upper front joint parts and tied together by seat canvas (14). In folded state all four upper joint parts (A, B, E, F) are brought closer to each other in such a way that, the each two opposite upper joint parts (A and F, B and E) are approached.
Description
COLLAPSIBLE WHEELCHAIR FRAME
The invention concerns a collapsible wheelchair frame which is constructed so that the wheelchair is easily folded for carrying or transportation without the use of any additional tools. In addition, the proposed construction provides sufficient solidity in using the wheelchair. The invention belongs to IPC class A 61 G 05/02.
The technical problem which is successfully solved by the proposed construction consists in carrying out a frame which would make it possible to fold the wheelchair to a dimension suitable for carrying and/or transporting the wheelchair e.g. in a motor car, and at the same time preserve all the vital functions of the wheelchair (possibility of manual drive, stability, agility, and the like).
A normal collapsible wheelchair has the base frame carried out in such a way that the bigger rear drive wheels are fixed to the frame which is transversely assembled. When the frame is being folded, the front and the rear transverse supports have to be pushed away, then the wheelchair is "pressed together" by bringing closer the parts on which the drive wheels are mounted.
A wheelchair thus folded preserves its outer dimensions which equal the side projection dimensions of an assembled wheelchair; this means that it is very difficult to transport such a wheelchair in a cab or boot of a motor car and that it is by all means very difficult to load and unload a wheelchair thus folded.
In some wheelchair versions it is possible to take off the wheels; in this way the outer dimensions of the folded wheelchair are made smaller, but the disassembling and assembling of the wheelchair is more difficult.
The construction of a wheelchair frame in accordance with the invention makes it possible to link its joint parts by means of flexible, interconnected bars, to fold the frame longitudinally and transversely by pulling the seat rods tied together by a seat canvas out of the upper front
joint parts. In folded state, all four upper joint parts are brought closer to each other by approaching each two opposite upper joint parts.
The invention will be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is an axonometric side view of a collapsible wheelchair frame in accordance with the invention in unfolded state;
Fig.2 illustrates a collapsible wheelchair frame in accordance with the invention in folded state.
Figure 1 illustrates a collapsible wheelchair frame in accordance with the invention in axonometric side view in unfolded state. Essentially, the frame of the wheelchair consists of an assembly of rods which are flexibly linked in joint parts A through F. Into the lower sides of the upper joint parts A, B two upright tubes 1 , 1 ' are inserted, and into the upper sides two wheelchair pushing handles 3, 3'are inserted. The pushing handles 3, 3' are tied together by a backrest belt 4.
The opposite ends of the tubes 1 , 1 ' are pushed into the lower joint parts C, D, and onto the same joint parts C, D rollers 2, 2' are mounted in a rotating way. The joint parts A and D are flexibly interlinked by a crossbar 5, while the joint parts B and C are flexibly interlinked by a crossbar 5'. The crossbars 5, 5' are also flexibly interlinked.
A support bar 6 is carried out of the upper joint part A ending in a drive wheel 9, while a support bar 6' is carried out of the upper joint part B ending in a drive wheel 9'. The support bars 6, 6' are also fitted with hand-operated drives 7, 7' with bidirectional driving effect which are equipped with drive handles 8, 8'. The hand-operated drives 7, 7' may be either directly mounted on the drive wheels 9, 9' or indirectly linked with them via drive belts, as shown in Figure 1 , or via chains or by some other known means X, Y.
The upper joint parts E, F are at the one side flexibly linked with the rear lower joint parts C, D via crossbars 10, 10', while the crossbars 10, 10' are also flexibly linked with the support bars 6, 6', and the front upper joint parts E, F are linked with crossbars 11, 11' with the support bars 6, 6' at the place where the drive wheels 9, 9' are mounted. The front upper joint part E is linked via the crossbar 11 with the support bar 6', while the upper joint part F is linked with the support bar 6 via the crossbar 11 '. The crossbars 11 , 11 ' are also flexibly interlinked.
At the inside of the lower part of the support bars 6, 6' feet supports 12, 12' are mounted.
Into the upper joint parts A, B also the ends of seat rods 13, 13' are flexibly mounted, the rods being tied together by a seat canvas 14 and, when the collapsible wheelchair frame under the invention is not folded, their opposite ends are stuck under the front upper joint parts E, F.
In order to fold a collapsible wheelchair frame into the state shown in Figure 2, one first has to push and lift the ends of the seat rods 13, 13' out
of the front upper joint parts E, F, then push the opposite lying upper joint parts e.g. A towards F and B towards E. In this way one folds the frame longitudinally and transversely, and finally one lowers the seat rods 13, 13'.
A collapsible wheelchair frame in accordance with the invention thus folded occupies very little space.
