Definitions
- the present invention relates to a re-sealable powder package formed from an integral preform of cardboard or like material.
- the present invention more particularly relates to a powder package having characteristics and shape defining generally a package of cellulosic material, typically intended to be used for packaging an industrial product for domestic use.
- the package is provided with means for both evidencing tampering with the product and for allowing re-closure of the lid.
- a package for powder formed by folding a flat blank of cellulosic material comprising an opening flap openable to reveal an opening into the package, rupture of the material of the package occurring during opening of the flap, the flap having a lip which, in an initial state, is fixed externally of the package and which, on re-closing of the flap, enters into the package.
- the flap pivots, on opening and closing, about a fold line of the blank.
- the flap may extend across a panel of the package to maximise the size of the opening.
- the lip extends normally to the flap when closed.
- the rupture of material typically occurs, at least partially, by delamination thereof.
- the rupture of material may also occur, at least partially, by tearing along a line of perforations.
- One or more projections may project into the opening from the surrounding material, in order to engage the flap on re-closure thereof to promote its retention in its closed condition.
- the flap and the lip are formed as regions defined, respectively, within a top panel and a fixing panel of the blank, the top panel and the fixing panel being interconnected at a fold line.
- the fixing panel may then be secured by adhesive to an external porion of a front wall of the package.
- the flap is inserted into the package adjacent an inner portion of the front wall.
- the lip may defined by a line of perforations in the fixing panel, and he flap may be defined by delamination regions within the upper panel, each delamination region being formed by two adjacent spaced parallel cuts into opposing faces of the material of the blank and extending part way therethrough.
- Figure 1 represents a general developed plan view of a preform for a first embodiment of a package embodying the present invention
- Figure 2 represents a partial plan view showing closing means for the package of Figure 1;
- Figure 3 represents a general developed plan view of a preform for a second embodiment of a package embodying the present invention
- Figure 4 represents a partial plan view showing closing means for the package of Figure 3
- Figures 5, 6, 7 and 8 show a package formed from the blank of figure 3 in, respectively, a sealed, a partially open, a fully open, and a re-closed condition.
- the first embodiment of a package of the present invention is constructed from a blank having panels intended to form, when assembled as a package, a parallelepiped having a front face 1, a rear face 3, a bottom face 2 and a top face 4.
- the front face l and the top face 4 of the package are formed from the free end faces of the blank in its developed condition.
- a first of two sides faces of the parallelepiped is formed by a pair of ears 6,8, ear 6 being external and ear 8 being internal and the second of the two side faces, by a pair of ears 10,12, ear 10 being external and ear 12 being internal.
- the top face 4 has a relatively recessed lip 5 with a central opening tab 14 hinged at the free edge thereof.
- the free edge of tab 14 has a punched line 15 which fits into a serrated portion (x) at the outer part of the front face 1.
- This system is covered by an elongated closure strip 17.
- Serrated strips 16 will permit the case to be opened upon being released.
- Ears 7,8,9,11,12 and 13 have diagonal serrations at their outer surfaces to facilitate gluing during assembly of the package.
- FIG. 2 shows in greater detail the closure system of this first embodiment of the present invention.
- the inner part of the top face 4 is formed by a first layer, with a second layer of cardboard overlapping the first and having a lesser longitudinal extent that the first layer so as to leave two side edges 20 and 21.
- the second layer is interrupted at the top part so as to leave a longitudinal strip 23, separating the major part of the extent of the second layer from the upper longitudinal edge 22 thereof.
- Edges 20 and 21 have been partially sectioned through the thickness of the cardboard generating in complement edges 18 and 19 of ears 13 and 9.
- Respective unfoldable parts 24 and 25 or ears 13 and 9 separate edges 18 and 19 from the major part of these ears 13 and 9.
- Edge 23 is glued by means of adhesive to the back of a lip 26 at the free edge of front face 1 of the package.
- FIGS 3 and 4 show a package being a second embodiment of the present invention.
- parts corresponding to those of the first embodiment will be given the same reference numerals.
- the differences between this embodiment and the first one are concentrated upon the top face 4 and on the closure system of the package.
- the package of the second embodiment is formed from a blank comprising a base panel 3, front and rear panels 1, 2, a top panel 4 and a fixing panel 30 These panels are interconnected at parallel fold lines 50, 51, 52, 53, the fixing panel at one end, connected at fold line 53 to the top panel 4, this, in turn, being connected at fold line 52 to the rear panel 2, followed, at fold line 51 by the base panel 3, and finally, at fold line 50 to the front panel 1.
- Each panel 1,2,3,4, except the fixing panel 30 has connected to it at respective fold lines a pair of ears 6,10; 7,11; 8,12; 9,13, said respective fold lines being disposed at right angles to the fold lines 50..53.
- the package (illustrated in Figs 5 to 7) formed from the folded blank comprises bottom, front, rear and top walls formed by the panels 3,1,2,4 and end walls formed by the ears 6..13, overlapping regions of the ears being secured by adhesive.
- the fixing panel 30 is secured together by adhesive to a region 26 of the front panel l remote from its fold line 50, the fold line 53 of the fixing panel being formed so as to allow it to be folded around the external fold of the fold line 50.
- an opening flap 4' within by a surrounding region 34.
- the opening flap 4' extends form the fold line 52, generally rectangularly within the top panel 4 to extend across the fold line 53.
- Side regions of the opening flap 4' are defined by delamination regions 54, 55 each formed by two spaced cuts extending partially through the material of the blank from its outer and inner surface respectively.
- the cuts of the respective regions 54, 55 are spaced further from one another on the outer surface of the blank than on the inner. Close to the fold line 53, the cuts on the outer surface converge to overlie the cuts on the inner surface at the fold line 53. At this region, there is a slight narrowing of the spacing between the lines on the sides of the opening flap so as to produce two small projections 60 of the surrounding region 34.
- the opening flap 4' is defined by a perforated tear line 56. Extending form the fold line 53 the flap tapers to a remote boundary, to form a lip 27 in the general shape of a trapezium. Centrally, and opposite the fold line 53, there is a semi-circular cut-out 28 in the opening flap 4 1 .
- FIG. 4 The opening system of the second embodiment is illustrated more clearly in Figure 4.
- a region 4' of the top panel 4 is folded away from the top panel 4 leaving an opening 4" (see also Figure 7) .
- Unfoldable parts 33, 34 that is, parts between fold lines) of ears 13, 9 separating these ears from respective rupture edges 35 and 36 for opening and a handle 30 having a cutout edge 31 surround opening 4" and the unfolded part of top face.
- the folded down part has also rupture edges 37 and 38 for opening forming respectively extensions of edges 35 and 36.
- the closure lip 32 has an opening with a variable shape, for instance, it has a central semicircular recess 29, to act as a finger guide to aid opening, and a serrated edge 28 is adjacent to longitudinal edges 39 and 40.
- the lip 32 is first detached from the fixing panel 30 along the perforated tear line 56, as shown in Figure 6. This can be accomplished by inserting a user inserting a finger into the semi-circular cut-out 28 and pulling.
- the opening flap 4' is then lifted upwards to open the package, as shown in Figure 6.
- the material from which the package is formed undergoes delamination in the delamination regions 54, 55 of the rupture edges 35, 26, 27, 38.
- the upper panel or top face 4 is returned to its original position as in the sealed package (see Figure 8) , wherein edges 20, 21 and 22 meet their extensions 18 and 19 and as indicated at Y in Figure 2. Locking is achieved by inserting tab 14 into the serration at X, with the lip 5 externally overlapping face 1.
- the upper panel or top face 4 is returned to its original position as in the sealed package, wherein edges 20,21 and 22 meet their extensions 18 and 19. Locking is achieved by inserting lip 32 into the inside of the package, and also by the projections 60 engaging the outer surface of the opening flap 4' . Pressure applied to a central region 61 of the fixing panel 30 will cause the flap 4' to be released from its re-closed condition.
