Abstract

Disclosed is a method of reacting a fluid that undergoes an exothermic reaction followed by an endothermic reaction or an endothermic reaction followed by an exothermic reaction. A container is divided into an endothermic compartment and an exothermic compartment by a heat transferring surface (6) and the two compartments are connected so that the fluid flows over one side of the surface (6), where either the endothermic or exothermic reaction occurs, and then over the opposite side of the surface (6), where the exothermic or endothermic occurs, then leaves the reactor. Heat from the exothermic reaction is used to promote the endothermic reaction.

ceramic surface, and performing the other of said reactions on said
opposite side.
2. A method according to Claim 1 wherein said thermally conductive
surface is a tube.

5. A method according to Claim 2 wherein said exothermic reaction occurs
before said endothermic reaction and said fluid is transported through
the inside of said tube and then over the outside of said tube. 6. A method according to Claim 2 wherein said endothermic reaction occurs before said exothermic reaction and said fluid is transported over the outside of said tube and then through the inside of said tube.
7. A method according to Claim 1 wherein said fluid comprises a mixture
of ethane and chlorine gases.
8. A method according to Claim 7 wherein said surface is a tube and said
mixture reacts exothermically inside said tube and endothermically on
the outside of said tube.
9. A method of exothermically reacting then endothermically reacting, or
endothermically reacting then exothermically reacting, the components of a fluid that contains chlorine gas and a hydrocarbon, comprising performing said exothermic reaction as said fluid passes through the
inside of a heat conducting ceramic tube and performing said
endothermic reaction as said fluid passes over the outside of said tube.
10. A method according to Claim 9 wherein said exothermic reaction occurs
before said endothermic reaction. 11. A method according to Claim 9 wherein said endothermic reaction
occurs before said exothermic reaction.
12. A method according to Claim 9 wherein said tube is contained within a
second tube.
13. A method according to Claim 9 wherein said fluid has a Reynolds
number in excess of 2700.
14. A method according to Claim 9 wherein said fluid comprises a mixture of ethane and chlorine gases.
15. A method of making ethylene comprising exothermically reacting a first
mixture which comprises ethane and chlorine gases as said first mixture moves through the inside a multiplicity of heat conducting ceramic tubes,
whereby a second mixture is formed which comprises ethyl chloride, and
endothermically reacting said ethyl chloride to form said ethylene as said
second mixture moves over the outside of said multiplicity of heat
conducting ceramic tubes in the opposite direction of said first mixture.
17. A method according to Claim 15 wherein said tubes are made of silicon
carbide. 18. A method according to Claim 15 wherein said first mixture has a
Reynolds number in excess of 2700.
19. A method according to Claim 15 wherein each of said tubes is enclosed
within a second tube.
20. A method according to Claim 19 wherein a hot gas is passed over the
outside of said second tubes.
21. A method according to Claim 20 wherein said hot gas moves in the same
direction as said second mixture.
