Abstract

Wrist pin for a two-piece piston, presenting a constant cylindrical external surface (41) and an internal surface with an internal diameter, varying throughout the length of the pin (40), in order to produce end portions of the pin having a reduced wall thickness between the outer half of the supporting face of the bosses (50), where there exclusively occur bending moment and shearing force applied by the inertia of the skirt (20) and of the moving assembly (100), the reduction in the wall thickness being obtained by the increase in the internal diameter of the pin (40) at said end portions, through end revolution surfaces (43, 44) with a generatrix being at least substantially straight.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS
[received by the International Bureau on 9 October 1995 (09.10.95);
original claim 2 cancelled; original claim 1 amended;
claims 3-6 renumbered as claims 2-5 (2 pages)] l. Wrist pin for a two-piece piston, presenting a tubular shape with a unique external cylindrical surface having end portions supported on respective holes of a skirt portion of the piston and onto which are applied bending and shearing forces produced during the piston operation by the hollow bosses of a piston top portion and by a connecting rod, which are mounted around the pin, and internal surfaces of different diameters, wherein the internal surfaces comprise: a median cylindrical surface (42), which extends radially, so to have its end edges spaced from the respective pin ends and axially external to the pin regions submitted to higher bending and shearing forces produced by the bosses (50) and connecting rod (30); a first and a second end revolution surface (43, 44), with a generatrix at least substantially rectilinear, defining the internal surface of the pin between each end edge of the median cylindrical surface (42) and the adjacent end of the pin (40), each end surface being radially aligned with the respective end portion of the external cylindrical surface (41) of the pin and with the axially outer half of the respective boss of the top portion and defining a respective pin end portion presenting a wall thickness that is reduced in relation to the pin portion presenting the median cylindrical surface (42) and dimensioned to support bending and shearing forces only, resulting from inertia and from lateral radial forces, each first end surface (43), extending from the adjacent end edge of the median cylindrical surface (42). causing an increase in the internal diameter of the pin (40) and having its opposite end edge matching with a second end surface (44) extending towards the adjacent end face (45) of the pin (40).
2. Wrist pin, as in claim 1, wherein each first end surface (43) is provided at a region of the pin (40) that is radially aligned with one of the parts defined by the outer half of the supporting face of the bosses (50) and by the gap between said supporting face and the internal wall (23) of the skirt ( 20 ) , each second end surface ( 44 ) being radially aligned with the supporting service area (E3) of the respective hole of the skirt (21).
3. Wrist pin, as in claim 2, wherein the first end surface (43) is inclined by an angle a that varies from 0 to 45 degrees, from the longitudinal axis of the piston and presents a longitudinal extension (E1) from 0.5 to 3.5 % of the piston diameter, the second end surface (44) being inclined by an angle b, varying from 45 to 90 degrees, from the longitudinal axis of the piston, and a longitudinal extension at least equal to the supporting service area (E3) of the skirt hole (21), and wherein, when a is maximum b is minimum and vice-versa.
4. Wrist pin, as in claim 3, wherein the angle a is approximately 15 degrees and the angle b is approximately 70 degrees.
5. Wrist pin, as in claim 3, wherein the end edge of each second end surface (44) substantially coincides with the external edge of the adjacent end face of the pin (40).
