- This invention relates to a pipe coupling for receiving one end of a length of pipe, tube, tubing, tubular portion of a fitting, or a pipe section, and all of which are intended to come within the definition of the term "a pipe section of the pipe specified".
- the present invention therefore seeks to provide a simplified type of coupling arrangement, and which can be operated simply and reliably and on a repeatable basis without undue wear occurring.
- a pipe coupling for receiving one end of a pipe section of the type specified, said coupling comprising: a tubular body having a receiving socket at one end; and a resiliently deformable gripping collet receivable by said socket and having a number of circumferentially spaced gripping tongues, said tongues extending generally parallel to the axis of the tubular body and having inwardly extending gripping teeth to grip the outer periphery of a pipe section when the latter is entered into the coupling; in which the socket includes an inwardly facing guide surface which is engageable with at least part of the outer periphery of said tongues, said guide surface having such a profile that the collet can be turned relatively thereto through an angle of less than 360° about the axis of the tubular body between a release position and a clamping position with respect to a pipe section to be received by the socket.
- the collet has three gripping tongues, spaced equally about the axis of the tubular body i.e. at 120° spacing between each adjacent pair of tongues, and a complementary profile of the guide surface may be provided, allowing relative rotation through a relatively small angle between the release position and the clamping position.
- the guide surface provided in the socket is a generally annular surface, but with circumferentially spaced cam portions spaced a smaller distance from the central axis of the collet than the remainder of the guide surface which preferably comprises a number of circumferentially spaced arcuate portions of the same radius.

- the socket 13 includes a generally annular inwardly facing guide surface 18 and which is engageable with at least part of the outer peripheries of the tongues 15, this guide surface 18 having such a profile that relative turning movement through a relatively small angle between collet 14 and tubular body 10 and about axis 16 enables the pipe coupling to be converted between a release mode and a clamping mode with respect to pipe section 11.
- the generally annular guide surface 18 has circumferentially spaced arcuate portions of constant radius, and also includes inwardly projecting cam portions of smaller radial spacing from axis 16, and which are effective to apply radial inward force on the tongues 15 when the pipe coupling is converted to the clamping mode.
- the tongues 15 are preferably of identical construction, and the inner diameter of the collet 14 and of tongues 15 are designed to provide a tolerance fit at a greater diameter than that of pipe section 11, to allow insertion of the pipe section 11, when the pipe coupling is in the release mode.
- the collet 14 is located in the socket 13 of pipe coupling 12, and both collet 14 and the socket 13 have identical tapered sections.
- the inside diameter of the socket 13, at its greatest diameter (generally annular guide surface 18) is of non-symmetrical shape, being composed of circumferentially spaced arcuate portions of radius R,, and inwardly projecting cam portions of smaller radial spacing from axis 16, and of which one is shown by radius line R 2 .
- R 2 is greater than R, it will be noticed that the centre of curvature of radius line R 2 is spaced from the axis 16. Therefore, the effective diameter of this portion of guide surface 18, relative to axis 16, is less than radius R i r and therefore a cam feature is provided.

Abstract
L'invention concerne un raccord de tuyauterie (10) destiné à recevoir une extrémité d'un tronçon de tuyau (11). Le raccord de tuyauterie comprend un corps tubulaire (12) muni en une extrémité d'un embout femelle (13), dans laquelle s'adapte une douille de serrage (14) élastiquement déformable d'un ensemble de languettes de serrage circomférentiellement espacées (15) et placées généralement parallèlement à l'axe du corps tubulaire. Lesdites languettes comportent des dents de serrage (17) s'étendant vers l'intérieur et conçues pour serrer la périphérie externe du tronçon de tuyau (11) lorsque ce dernier est introduit dans l'embout femelle. Cet embout (13) présente une surface de guidage (18) tournée vers l'intérieur et pouvant venir en contact dans au moins une partie de la périphérie externe des languettes (15), ladite surface de guidage présentant un profil tel que l'on puisse imprimer une rotation à la douille (14) par rapport à celle-ci selon un angle relativement faible autour de l'axe (16) du raccord de tuyau. Ainsi, ledit raccord peut être utilisé soit un mode de libération soit un mode de serrage par rapport au tronçon de tuyau (11).
